The only thing Dave has said that I can disagree with, is that it's 'simple' to find all your posts by typing in your user name in a search. Yes, it does bring up all your posts, but it doesn't bring them up in chronological order. If you've been here for years as many have, you could have many pages of posts to review before you might stumble upon your most recent posts. I gave up on trying to find my posts in that way. I did decide to 'check the box' on each thread I post to, so that it will be sent to my email. That was not easy either. I had to contact support because after repeated efforts to set my account to allow emails, it wasn't changing it. Once I did contact Tamara, they did change it and now I do get emails for the threads I'm following. But, I don't always get them and sometimes they come into my email box days later. lol But, for now, that is working the best so far for trying to keep up with threads I am following. But my email box is now needing a lot more time weeding out. I use the Cornell site to read reviews on different vegetable varieties and like that site. I have however started following others' suggestions that Google/Gardenweb searches turn up better results than GW and have found that works better for me sometimes. I try the search function and if the results are just too random and I find myself *sighing*, I just start a new thread and ask for what I need. edit: I see someone above has said, that sometimes other members 'insist I do a search'. I have rarely had that happen to me, thankfully. My way of looking at it is, that every subject we discuss is a repeat of some earlier discussion. Some of the forums, especially over the winter, are so inactive, that any discussion is a bonus, even a repeat one. If we all did searches and found the answers we needed, we wouldn't need to be discussing live every day. And btw, even if you find posts on the subject you are looking for, they are not always giving you what you want. Sometimes there will be 3 posts on a thread. Leaf miners can be addressed with other than systemic insecticides, but your timing has to be spot on if you want to use sprays. They don't spend their entire life-cycle inside the leaf. And you will have to spray in that interval when they are external to the plant. I used to raise bearded iris for sale, and that meant the State inspector had to monitor my mother stock. I had a beginning infestation of iris borer on one variety, and she explained to me how they enter the leaves and then migrate into the rhizome and how to monitor for the earliest signs of them before they damaged the root stock. Same way with leaf miners. Due to your zone, I don't know if what you have are magnolia leaf miners or not, but they do produce damage like leaf scorch, in addition to the mines. Leaf miners can be moths, weevils, etc. it's a generic name for any insect who does this type of damage. So you have to identify the causative pest. Magnolia leaf miners do lay their eggs inside the leaf, the insect pupates in there after their larval stage, and emerges to the outside in summer.

Im new to this site but over 20 years growing from seeds collected from Southern magnolia old growth tree. i grow them in pots and have to repot from year to to year. mine usually flower in their 3rd year and after that i find new permanent homes because they are root bound . i have about 14 big 4 to 5 foot trees and about 16 2 year olds that go into big pots about 15 1 year olds and about 20 new trees from planting from new babies from this year. my hobbie is a 365 day job but evryone is good at something mine is Magnoias . After years of growing my trees keeping the watered and fertilized which i watch closely . After years of growing my seeds come from two places but i wonder why leaf shape and color are all differnt. last year as i always research new ideas i found out i was fertilizing wrong . Trees need a higher rate phosphorous for flowering plants such as 10/20/10 and soe chicken manurer which is high in phosphorus when i did that last year all the trees turned dark immediately and the flowers heartier with more blooms and keep flowering more throughout summer . Not as many as the first of june but when they did put on blooms randomly the flowers were hardier and unlike before they would try to bloom as in hot august they would burn up as they would try to do they would go full full bloom in the heat . it jus goes to show you can learn something new. it was probably my most aha moment in my magnolia growing history . i live in Tulsa Ok and get my seeds from local trees which i think is a big factor of my success. but dont know for sure. Just trying to share my experience i give all my trees away locally at no cost but try to find good forever homes for them.
