Some plants don't grow in my garden

I have got a good variety of plants in the yard, including happy and strong tomatoes, green beans etc. However, some plants simply don't grow. A bunch of marigolds are not much bigger than when I transplanted them from Jiffy pellets, even though they are having one single flower now. My Shasta daisy still has only 3-4 leaves, and alyssum no more than 4 inches in size but have already had mini cluster of flowers. The same was for Chinese parsley, and a few mums. Is it because the soil is more suitable for some plants than others? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
