Cost cutting ideas?

Hi, everyone. We are in the process of building a new plot at our community garden this year. We did a small plot (3X10) last year with SFG methods (and got hooked!), so we will be adding a 10X10 plot this year. So far, we have decided to locate old cinder blocks to build our 10X10 frame. We have decided to fill the frame with 8" of additional soil and to put 8" paths in between four 4X4 squares.

We are looking for any and all solutions to cut costs, yet still employ SFG principles. Any good ideas on how to cut soil costs and path costs? Has anyone from the DC metro region located cheap peat moss/vermiculite/compost sources? (I did not use Mel's mix last year, but would like to give it a go this year if I can afford it). Alternatively, is there a more cost effective mix that folks feel gives the same results? Re: paths -- they will probably have to be laid at soil level (unless we score a bounty of cinder blocks) -- any ideas other than the wood boards Mel uses?

Thanks -- I've enjoyed reading all of the posts so far!
