Making super easy seed-tapes at home.
Comments (5)Thanks. I use the dining table because it's the easiest to clean up. I tried doing this project once on cardboard, but the glue just makes a mess everywhere. I know us wives HATE our kitchen tables to be used for messy projects, but a moist paper towel in between seed-strips cleans perfectly, leaving no trace of the glue or pen behind! :)...See MoreDIY Seed Tape -- It worked!!!!!!!
Comments (56)All sounds great. Question: Do you lay the tape flat? Is the tape folded over with the seed inside? Do the roots go through the lower layer to get to soil, or do they fan out growing between the two layers? Does this slow them down if they are laying on top of a paper layer? How about the shout going up. If there is a paper layer over the top of the seed, can the new shout push up through this layer of paper, or do they go sideways looking for a chance to go up freely? As they push up do they push the paper up on top of the shout? It seems that if the seeds are between two layers of paper, it would change their growth shape....See MoreSeed Tape experiments
Comments (20)Hey Jim, I have a question about your foliar feeding experiment. I read where you were careful not to let the foliar feed drip into the soil, but (and maybe I just overlooked it), I don't see anywhere that you said you were giving the non-foliar plants the same additional food through the roots? From my experience, the question isn't "Can plants absorb water and nutrients through the leaves", but "Is foliar feeding more effective than simply pouring it directly into the soil?" I mean, if both sets of plants are treated the same otherwise, and one is getting additional feeding, it seems rather straight forward that it would do better. The real question is efficiency. If both plants receive the same amount of feeding, only one gets it only on the leaves and the other gets it only on the roots, which one will do better?...See MoreMost of my 'browns' are paper - problem?
Comments (41).. WRT alternate sources of browns - consider your local tree services. Careful that you don't end up with more than you need. WRT to paper as a sole source for browns - yeah it's fine. But I think you know that already. WRT toxic junk mail - yes domestic printing seems to have steered way from toxic inks but anything that might have been printed overseas is origin unknown to me and I won't trust it. If you want something to make you itch, think about office paper and all that plastic toner from laser printers and photocopiers. It's non-toxic but it is plastic. I will continue to compost office paper as long as I can get bags of shredded stuff free. Frankly I'm a little more worried about what I might step in in a parking lot. WRT recycling v composting - I'm on the fence on what is the better path. Recycling is often energy intensive. With a suitable time horizon I could see composting as a more attractive path forward. WRT why should composting be free? With the gargantuan waste stream this country produces, people pay a lot of money to get rid of that much waste. San Francisco has to pay, one way or another, to compost all that happy stuff let alone dispose of all the non-compostables. When I started out composting I was into making as much compost as fast as possible but now I'm more into digesting as much waste as I can as opposed to producing compost. There are some localities around here that will discount your trash pick up if you go through the pain and agony of going through the composting certification thing. I'm not eager to foist my waste onto someone else by flushing it down the toilet or leaving it by the curbside to be picked up and out of my sight. I still have to do that but little by little I do a little less. to sense .....See Moremedontdo
