Gardening in Shade

Looking for a hardy white Brugmansia? Or something similar?

Hi. I'm currently buying some plants for a bed I have. I want white and purplish colors. I've fallen in love w/the brugmansia - but they're not hardy in my zone (5). Is there such a thing as a hardy brug? Or, if not, is there some summer blooming perennial that has a similar growth habit? I like the way the flowers kind of droop, or weep. I'm currently getting a clematis to climb up the tree, w/some white bleeding hearts, maybe some Solomon's Seal and Campanulas. This isn't a true full shade bed, rather the site would get full morning sun, shade during the middle of the day and then late afternoon/evening dappled sun (that's why I think the Clematis will work). The problem is I'd really like something that will bloom later in the season and maybe smell good too? Any suggestions?

It's a shame no one has had a suggestion for you. As far as I know, brugmansia is not hardy (but you can inquire on the Brugmansia forum, of course).

You might want to post a new question with a different title - "looking for late season white blooms". Does it matter if it is a shrub or a perennial? If you're ok with a perennial, then perhaps post this question on that forum instead and note that you need something for shade.

If it gets full morning sun, determine how many hours of sun that is, it may qualify for a full sun plant if it gets 6 hours worth.

if you will e-mail me I will be happy to send you some White Datura seed. I must warn you that the plant can be a pest if you do not keep the seed pods collected.
If you bring your Brug inside each year, cutting the growth for rooting, you should not have a problem at all with it.
I have several white ones and when I learn how to mail them so that they do not decay, I will also be happy to send you cuttings of them. They are so very easy to root. If I can do it, you can do it.
Brugs are another new passion of mine.

Also thinking catharanthus (flowering vinca) if you want an effect much like impatiens in shade. They don't have huge blooms but they have many of them, just like impatiens. You might also consider the profusion type of zinnia, who grow along like a wiry, blooming groundcover. You can get them in shades of pink and white and they're also pretty trouble free. The up part is they spread out and fill in the area generously. There are other options too. Flowering purslane, and the mounding miniature petunias. I grew one last spring.....product of new breeding.........it would not go hog-wild like a wave, but is a smaller, very much tidier version of it. I was impressed and I don't impress easily. LOL. I can't bring the line up, but I'll think of it and share.

rpcollector, Welcome to GW. I am your neighbor to the north in Indiana. I thought you might like to know it would be best to put an email link on your member page as everyone else does. Try Shirley poppies, they are a bit taller, come in shades of red, pink and white. They will reseed just like California poppies. Almost any annual that is classified as a "hardy annual" will do well with the sprinkle and neglect routine, if sowed in fall. Try Nigella, Larkspur and annual red flax along with the Shirley poppies if you want a real thrill. If you can't find a local source, the Thomson and Morgan seed catalog carries these, and others. Thanks Jerry, that is very kind of you. I am unfortunately going to wait. I'm just doing research for next year. They have started on the yard, however the city has been very frustrating and shut us down for now. The poor workmen who are relying on their pay. I feel awful for them, and the city is just trying to grub money for something they don't get a cent for. Hopefully next week we are back at it!!

Try the Formosa Lily hardy to zone 5. Also try Cardiocrinum giganteum hardy to zone 6. See http://www.waysidegardens.com/ for both Angel's Trumpet look alikes

Is sweet autumn clematis hardy in your zone? It's covered with fragrant white flowers in late summer and early fall. How about anemone Honorine Jobert? White flowers in the fall.

Or moonflower which is a nonhardy, white, deliciously scented morning glory - blooms open in the evening though.
