Sometimes on forums like this, people seem not to post if they have nothing nice to say. If you search the archives you will see that almost no one here has a high opinion of Leylands. Please, spare future generations the same problems you're having now by not planting any more that will just blow over in the next Sandy 30 years later, or decline from disease sooner. It's particularly funny to see attempts at creating an "estate" feeling by surrounding the house w/hideous walls of leylandii, which look particularly comical when a few of them topple over. At the very least, plant Thuja 'Green Giant' instead, it is more disease resistant. And because it grows slower, less likely to outgrow its roots. Among other things - put some spruces and pines in there if you must stick to cheap conifers. A screen planting should have a variety of plants so that if one becomes prone to a disease you don't lose the entire effect. I think hollies are undervalued as screening plants. Nurseries don't push them because they are more expensive to produce as salable plants than most [screening] conifers. You do have to wait longer though, they are definitely slower than leylands. They don't get as much love here because they aren't conifers. Nellie Stevens is ok but the very large growing hybrid I X koehneana would be even more useful for your lot size. Sadly it's almost unavailable in the trade. McLean Nursery in Balto., MD, has small plants for a reasonable price but they don't ship. The grow about 1' a year for the first 5 years, but then speed up to about 2' a year. As people have posted here previously, the real solution to quick screening is to think about what you are really trying to achieve. Are you trying to entirely block the view from anywhere in your yard to anywhere beyond it? Or do you have an area where you sit that you'd like privacy. In that case build a small screened area with some trellis lathes and grow some annual vines on it.

Nicole, I'm going to make a guess, I don't like the looks of where that bush was planted. It isn't at ground level, it is above the ground, and it is in direct line of all that water pouring off your roof when you have a good rain. Conifers can take a beating, but they need GOOD drainage. I would never plant an arborvitae or any conifer in that tiny raised space right next to the roof like that. If you plant something else there, don't plant a tree, a magnolia is a tree. Plant something small, that will have some space in that very small raised bed you have there. Try looking up albelia. I have one, they are ever green, member of homeysuckle family, and they have small types. Plants or shrubs(small), that don't need excellent drainage will do fine there.

The soil your tree is in looks heavy and compacted. Roots do not get enough oxygen. Watering at a fixed shedule instead of only watering when the first one to two inch are dry is the next big problem. Also the post sits in a dish without raiser and I do not see how the water can drain freely. Since this plant was already re pottet and potting again would definitely kill it now, here is what I would do. Get a drill and make additional holes at the bottom sides of the pot. With a knitting needle aerate the soil (stick in the top and do gentle little swirl around to loosen the soil). Finally put something in the plate to raise the container up. Place in a warm and light spot. Careful with water as not too wet. Hope for the best. Maybe others here have different ideas.

It is probably at the end of its life cycle and new shoots will come up because I see a young pup ready to take over. I planted mine in the ground and dug them up over the years. Started with one culm (a gift from a friend) and from that one it multiplied to probably 25 or more. Gave several away. Anyway I tried saving the mother plant indoors over winter but that never happened. The new banana plants would come on and grow 10 feet if the culm was big enough. After all this observation I started cutting the entire plant down before digging up the culms. One thing I learned too is do not store the culms in a dry space - they will not survive. Keep them moist for months and plant out again. My last season (2017) I just dropped the culms on the ground and let them root in by themselves. Not as big this way but still six feet or so. Here was the ones I dropped on the ground in 2017. The temporary fencing is 3 feet tall. These are the ones I stored dry and lost them all. One of the mother plants I tried saving in 2015 and the grove I had going (this was late October 2015) and I had 3 more stands not in this photo. This is the recommended way to save the banana culms for the next year (one of the trugs has elephant ears in it). Just dribble a little water in there to keep them moist and happy while dormant. Anyway I was able to save four babies (I potted these four up and put under lights) the year I stored the big culms in a cardboard box and didn't water at all during winter. I put these 4 babies out the next spring (about six inches high) and they grew about 3 feet. Here are 3 of them in 2018. I never got around to digging these up for winter and lost these 3. The other one I had in another location did come up from the ground so dug it up a week ago to keep the banana legacy alive. HA! My advice to you is to cut the dying plant and let the baby/babies take over.
