A few August blooms

Just a few recent photos. Things are recovering from our heat wave but the roses are small still. All taken in early morning, pre-sun.

beautiful pics kathy......you said predawn....you mean with flash? trying to learn to use my digital still...and how close do you get to your roses? do you use macro? sorry for all the questions.....but thanx.....

Flying Trapeze caught my eye first as well.. Avedon, I dont think it would matter where you would purchase it from.. ALL my daylilies act as dormants here.. but I can tell the true dormants, becuase they wake up much easier in spring, with much less spring sickness. But if you moved my semi and evergrees down south, they would act according to thier nature where you plant them. There is a world of diffrence even in evergreens here, I have several dozen, some are barely effected, with enough vigor to overcome thier slower spring starts, others are dogs, who will never be more then a couple fans. Carol, that's funny. Maybe that's why I like PP's fragrance so much. You probably do have toads. You just need water to attract them. I made a little in-ground water feature in my garden/nursery just for fun which I think it's attracted to because of all the tasty snacks that are there for him/her. Do you have any kind of pond or ground-level water in your garden? I dug a trench and took some pond liner and put a layer of grey river rock that you see in the toad photo. There's a sprayer there to fill it with water each day and I wash it out every few days to get rid of mosquito larvae. I think the little guy's pretty happy. :-)

Thanks, Trish. The drip system, and using it quite often, has really helped, and so has my discovery that the roses, and really any plant, need a raised soil border to keep the water from running off sideways. The latter has really helped immensely, and I'm seeing many more buds and blooms than before, even with the hot weather we've been having. SdlM had been looking rather poor and sparse until I discovered that the soil below the mulch and top inch of soil was completely dry. Please don't ask why it took me so long to figure this out and finally do something about it. My husband's involvement in this project has made a huge difference since this is a lot of work,especially for the larger roses and the ones that have a steep hillside behind them. Your Rosie is a clever dog; she knows how to make you understand what she wants without having to make a single sound.

bk, it wasn't actually predawn but early morning before the sun hit the yard. It is harder to get accurate colors without some sun, it seems to me.
I just use a closeup flower setting on my camera. I take the photos anywhere from a foot and a half to 2 feet from the flower--I think. Good photo software is really helpful--I use photoshop elements. However, the best photos need almost no manipulation.

Jean, my Marilyn is on a growth-bloom spurt right now. I need to cut some and bring them in.
Iris, Sultry is a really pretty rose here.
