The Alphabet in Roses...A

For some silly reason I've always tried to have at least one rose whose name begins with each letter of the alphabet. I think this might be Kathy's fault but I'm not sure. Anyway I thought I'd share my roses in alphabetical order with you and tell you a little bit about them and how they do for me.

The As:

Albuquerque Enchantment is a perky little mini I got last year from Cottage Farms through QVC (I don't recommend ordering from them though because out of the set of 12 I got 5 were mislabeled). It's a strong grower and regular bloomer for me. It does black spot occasionally. (You will hear that refrain frequently. I live in Michigan, the fishbowl state, and I resist spraying as much as possible.)

Angel Face was one of mom's roses and has been here for decades. Yes she's a BS magnet but she winters like a champ and blooms even when she's nekkid of leaves. Plus she smells divine!

Appleblossom Flower Carpet is a ground cover rose and it will cover ground. It makes it's self into about a 6 foot circle by the end of every summer. It's gorgeous when it's in full bloom. No problems with diseases either. This poor rose has been moved 4 times in the 5 years I've had it. Doesn't seem to bother it one bit. It's grown most every place I've put it!

American Pride is a tentative ID on this "Camelot NOT" rose. I got it last year and it's bloomed well but is very stunted in growth and every bloom droops because of weak stems. I'm not sure it's going to be a keeper.

Very beautiful, love your A's, Seil.

By the way, Beth is the Alphabet Wonder Goddess, lol! She is the one who does the A's! B's! and so on and so forth...

Thank you, everybody! Elemire, I agree that a noisette or a rambler certainly makes a big statement from afar, but I happen to love the closeups of those blooms too. It is not just the HTs and other huge blooms that deserve a closer look:-) Labrea, I agree, not just the leaves, but sometimes the whole bush shape is not too pleasing, but the blooms are wonderful. I'm late to the party, too. What an amazing group of roses. I'm going back and forth from GF to HMF. Fun! Thanks Beth and everyone. Really good stuff, and roses I haven't seen before. Angel Face Abraham Darby I also have Alec's Red, but I can't find the one bloom I got last year. It's being moved this year to a sunnier location.

Thanks Carol! I bet Beth probably has Art Nouveau somewhere in her collection. Anna de Diesbach is indeed an OGR (1858), nice looking flowers but it smells like mothballs so I'm glad it's planted far away in the back of the rose bed. Matt

Lovely A's Seil! Yeah, I usually do the ABCs in the winter when we're all bored, waiting for spring and the new crop to arrive! But it's nice to see you showing them now.

I just haven't had time to post much of anything. I'm so overwhelmed with working 6days a week, it's hard to find time to even get in the yard anymore. And my new camera is a bit tougher to get good pics with. I have to tweak a lot to get them accurate. And my computer is old and slow. Takes hours to tweak just a few pictures. But eventually I'll get around to posting them.. in the Fall maybe!

Meantime, I'll enjoy seeing your alphabet Seil!! Your photos are so lovely!

Oh - I love your Angel Face!!!! Looks so beautiful!!!

Your Appleblossom looks so vigorous and healthy. Six feet spread - wow - do you have a picture of the whole thing - that would be interesting to see.

Unfortunately not this year, Carol. We moved it again! So I had to cut it back. But this was from last year. The canes were all blooming on top of each other so I staked them up to allow the bottom ones to bloom.

This shot of ABRAHAM DARBY is much pinker than usual, reflecting cooler temps. Cooler temps means that the photo wasn't taken in the last two months!
