Info on the Burgess Seed & Plant Co?
Comments (3)We just made an order with Burgess two months ago. We ordered 3 clematis, and a selection of various other plants. One of the clematis shipped. They outright refused to send us the other two, insinuating that perhaps we were lying. The one they did send was the very worst plant I've ever seen. It died shortly. The company is refusing to send replacements, or a refund. We asked them to cancel our remaining, unsent orders. They have refused. We are now in the process of contacting the FCC, the Illinois Attorneys General, and the BBB, which gives them a D+ rating. We only wish we had known that information before we placed our order. Two calls to their call center left us with zero information to go on. We were told to email customer service. Doing so has become a nightmare of wretchedly corrupt customer service, the likes of which we have never seen in thirty years of growing and ordering plants. At this point, we are preparing to accept the apparent fact that we have been systematically ripped off....See Morehas anyone planted this tree in CO
Comments (7)David, they look great in Western WA. There is a rhodie garden near where I used to live and they use them as a nice backdrop and windbreak. Here...eh. ------ An aside, Sunset Western Garden Book is the first thing off our shelves (the better half has her own reference shelf with some different books) when considering plants. There are four versions in our house and the second-to-newest goes in the vehicle when we go to the nursery. Wait until it goes on sale at HD and buy it for ~19.00, as opposed to the 27.00 at other times. Sunset came off my shelf to verify Paulownia tomentosa wouldn't grow here. We had it in Plant ID in California and for about a week it looks cool when the big flowers are visible. At other times its just blah and then it is a royal pain when the cr*ppy spent flowers fall, then the boring fall color leaves, then the ding-dang seed pods that trip the old ladies and break your rake and keep you from doing other things and all the twigs that fall at any old time and...um...did I mention that I don't care for this tree? Catalpa is at least adapted to this area, but is twiggy and drops big pods as well. Kentucky coffee tree is well-adapted, has a better form IMHO than catalpa and tougher. Less twiggy but pods too. We're removing the Gleditsia and replacing with the coffee tree. Dan...See MoreHas Has anyone ordered from 'Flowers by the Sea"?
Comments (9)I've had good experience ordering hummingbird plants from Plant Delights although I buy salvias from Colonial Creek Farm. I'm basically in the same geographic zone as you. The small salvias I planted in spring grew robust, three feet tall and three feet wide. I'm trying to have them stay in the ground this winter hoping they will survive under mulch, sheltered by a fence. I do not have unheated space to overwinter. If they don't survive the winter I will try grow lights next year. I sure hope we don't have a harsh winter....See MoreAnyone ever order from American Iron Bed Co.?
Comments (14)I ordered my son's bed (a Wesley Allen) from them a few years ago and it's both well-made and attractive. The service and delivery were good, and having the bed customized to allow space for a trundle was not a problem at all. I do wish that I had asked for sample finishes to be sent prior to ordering, because the black iron finish that I ordered had a lot of silver in it and I prefer warmer tones. Also, it was a standard powder coat finish and very evenly applied, so my one regret is that the bed doesn't really look like a banged up, old antique, but most people would probably prefer that! With that being said, I think their real antique beds are a bit expensive, and since I wanted an antique iron bed for my daughter, I ended up ordering hers from Loading Dock Antiques, which IMO has antique beds more reasonably priced than either AIB or Cat House. Plus, it's a Mom and Pop type shop and they did a wonderful job refinishing the bed in a distressed, chippy finish and sending me emails and photos during the process. I can see reselling the Wesley Allen if my son doesn't want to keep it after he leaves the nest, but my daughter's bed will definitely be staying or passed down. I just ordered another iron bed (my third in two years!) for my guest room and again wanted an antique rather than a reproduction. However, since it's hard to find an antique daybed in a true twin size that works with a trundle, I ordered the iron and brass daybed from Charles P. Rogers, in the antique iron finish. A bit more expensive, but they use solid forged iron, pure brass, hand poured castings and hand applied finishes. I'm hoping the end result is a new bed that looks like and has the quality of an antique. We'll see in a month or so after it's delivered. So, that's my unsolicited review for 3 different iron bed companies! Have fun choosing one for your daughter - I just love iron beds for little girls (and big girls, but I'm stuck with my husband's choice of Mission oak).
