Need 8 ft. shade privacy hedge. Ideas?

I have oleander growing all along the side fence of my backyard. It has recently gotten the disease that has killed off most of the oleander in our area. It is still in o.k. shape for now, but we need to replace it with something that will grow to about 8 feet and we would like to interplant it with the exsisting oleander untill it is large enough to block the view of my neighbors yard. The nursery salesman suggested wax leaf privet, but as we need coverage for 72 feet the price would be a bit steep planted at 4 feet apart. Do you think putting up trellises and planting honeysuckle would work with the oleander still there? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

As a gardener with several Oleander plants, I was surprised to learn that a fatal disease, OLS, is infecting plants in AZ & So. CA. The plants are so toxic, that I never considered any insect would be interested!
The suspected vector, the Glassy-winged sharpshooter, a leafhopper, is native to the SEUS and probably transmits other diseases in this area, but not OLS, so far!
Are you removing and destroying the plants, as soon as the disease is recognized?

Unless you have a source of cheap materials, wouldn't erecting trellises + plant material, be as expensive as planting shrubs?

Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend Wax=leaf Ligustrum or Honeysuckle, as both are invasive pests in this area and I spend many hours each year removing seedlings from the garden.
Why not a combination of plantings?
Some narrow trellises, 4-6' wide x 8' high. I would recommend an evergreen, woody vine, that I use and like very much: Trachleospermum jasminoides, known in the South as Confederate Jasmine and used as a groundcover or a climbing vine on trellises, arbors and pergolas. Blooms in early springtime here and is very pleasantly aromatic.
I acquired an attractive variegated leaf form last year and am testing it for hardiness in my Zone.

Some shrubs that I use for shielding the off-premise Uglies, are Camellia japonica & C. sasanqua, Pieris japonica (green and variegated foliage types), Aucuba japonica (Variegated Gold-Dust plant), Mahonia bealei & aquifolia, Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegata' & 'Goshiki' (both very slow growing), evergreen Rhododendron, native & Japanese Hollies (Ilex species & cultivars), Callistemon sp., Illicium floridanum & I. parviflorum.

To hide "bare legs", in cases where necessary, I have used Indian Hawthorn, Dwarf Loropetalum, 'Otto Luyken' Laurel, evergreen Azaleas, Carex and other evergreen perennials, plus dwarf varieties of Chamaecyparis pisifera and Yew.

Since there is concern about the disease affecting economic crops there, maybe there will be a cure for it in the near future. Let's hope so!

Box is not the same as privet. Buxus sempervirens (box) is a lower growing small leaved evergreen. It CAN grow to 8 feet - after about 50 years and if unpruned. Privet (Various Ligustrums) is deciduous in colder areas and has larger oval leaves. It is a very greedy feeder and will deplete the soil making it difficult if you want to have any kind of flower bed in front of it. There are lots of plants suitable for hedging without resorting to privet. And since you only want to fill a 15 ft length you would not need many plants. Viburnum tinus, Hibiscus syriacus, hollies, beech, hornbeam, yew, Escallonia, various roses, some of the Berberis, bay (if it's hardy for you) and many different conifers can all be grown as a hedge. But would you consider just going for a mixed shrub border rather than a hedge? It would be less formal but you could have a selection of evergreen and deciduous and go for shape, foliage, flowers, fragrance, berries etc as you wish. In front you could put in some perennials and bulbs. Stick in some bird feeders for the winter. The neighbours would be screened and you would be adding an attractive and interesting area to your garden which you could enjoy from your patio. It would not need the regular clipping that a hedge would require. The neighbours could enjoy it from their side and you wouldn't have to go round to their property for maintenance.

Some other factors to consider when thinking about hedges would include how much or little water you want to provide, whether it also has to be deer resistant, whether you are dealing with full sun or shade, and are you high enough up in Kensington that you need to worry about freeze tolerance? It can be significantly colder at the highest parts of Kensington that it isn't quite a Sunset zone 16 in a bad winter, with lows down to 20F a real possibility. I work on lots of gardens in the Berkeley/Oakland/Kensington hills areas, and it may be most useful to see what is working well in your neighborhood, and what appeals to you. You may also need to factor in that neighbors may get riled up if you block their distant views, just as you would if someone blocked your views. It may pay to take a more measured approach to creating privacy without planting a future monster. Personally I find many reasons to consider using clumping bamboos for hedging purposes; with the main reason being they don't need pruning to control size if you select the appropriate species for the height desired, they tend to stay narrow yet can grow tall, and pruning is easier when it simply involved removing old culms rather than ladders and pole saws. On the other hand, most bamboo species prefer a good amount of summer irrigation and are constantly shedding leaves and culm sheaths. The Sunset Western Garden Book Encyclopedia has a good section on screening shrubs, listing the various pros and cons. I would also seriously consider that the fastest growing hedges also tend to be the ones that require the most pruning to control size.

Leyland cypress is SO not a good idea for this situation! A 3' width is just not sufficient for a lot of hedging plants and especially Leylands. It takes a lot of maintenance to keep a plant that grows as fast and as wide as a Leyland to a very narrow profile and you need to make sure you have sufficient access. I'd also be concerned the aspect doesn't provide sufficient sunlight - while Leylands will tolerate some shade, they tend grow quite a bit sparser under these conditions. And they tend not to be very long-lived under many situations. Pruning these for hedging purposes is generally recommended at least 3 times a year (spring, summer and fall) and in the classic shape - narrow on top, wider at the base, sort of a lopped off A-line - to ensure the base gets sufficient light. I've seen some stunning Leyland hedges but they tend to be in rather open areas and the best looking are professionally maintained with very frequent attention. It's a lot of work. Mobile home parks typically offer very small properties to landscape - space is tight. And with all the dark gloomy days this area receives for many months of the year, a big dark wall of high maintenance foliage would just be depressing. I'd also avoid any thorny plants as a hedge right along your drive, so nix the holly or pyracantha too. An attractively designed screen or trellis graced with a few flowering vines sounds like the best option to me. It offers the narrowest solution, will be less intimidating in a small space and can provide both light and color.

nativetexas, you are most welcome. It can either be grown as a hedge/screen from soil line upward or the multi-trunked plant can be pruned at the base to display bare trunks. Pruning up a few feet would allow for under plantings, which could add additional interest. Of course, you could also get the same effect by planting in a bed in front of the Sweet Olive. To give you some perspective, I believe we planted Sweet Olive in 2009 with plants about 36-40 inches high. Today those plants are 12-14 feet in height, growing in dappled shade. I don't know how well Sweet Olive might do with your soil and knowing how spread out San Antonio is, soil conditions probably vary, depending on the specific area. Thought the following might at least provide a bit of information from someone in your general area who grows Sweet Olive. "Great as an understory planting under tall oak trees! Mine are about 18 feet tall and require little supplemental water. The fragrance in late winter, early spring and about the first of October is almost enchanting! In 20 years, I have never had to do a thing to these small trees - no pruning, no leaf rake up, no spraying for insect infestations and no fertilization. The deep green foliage is very attractive and the almost delicate appearance contrasts nicely with the oak. They should be used more, but they are difficult to find at garden centers.
