why I don't have roses blooming

Caught these 2 little fawns in my back yard at noon today,just eating away on a couple small potted roses.They had already stripped the young leaves off a climber back there.Didn't see the mama but bet she wasn't far away.One is in the neighbors yard by their little pool.

Hope these didn't turn out too big.The pictures was real dark so I had to add light to them,and got a tad too much I think,These babies still have their white spots,so can't be very old.Guess this adds 2 more to the 5 thats been coming in my yard eating everything in sight.A small area of my front yard is fenced,but the fence don't come right up to the house,theres a 2 ft gap between,and some thing ate the center out of a big dayliliy last night and I thought it may have been a rabbit,but now don't know if these little things got in my frnced in part or not.They would have had to walk on a sidewalk to get to it,and not sure if deer will walk on cement or not.Might have to figure how to close that gap so they can't get in,,,until they learn how to jump over it.:(well,on second thought they will walk onit as I have seen then crossing streets before.Wouldn't think we would have deer up in town like this.

I would hate to have to deal with deer, Jean, but they are so wonderful! I live in suburbia--not a deer in sight. I don't know what I'd do. I yearn to be nearer the country and nature.

ARGGGGGH!!!! I have the same problem Jean. I have two little babies with two grown deer and mine are young with spots like yours. They attacked a couple of weeks ago and had a nice salad of leaves, roses and rose buds. Now i'm getting alot of new buds so I am spraying every two weeks to try to keep them at bay until these last buds pop open. They are cute when little but we know what they become. Judy

Funny! Folks often joke that they need to get out the shovel and show it to the rose to get it to perform. Peter Mayle and Elle are your unloved roses??! I'd welcome them with open arms! (to my pot ghetto, since I am all full --of course) i have 2 roses I was secretly wishing would die and I left them out in pots all winter unprotected. ( One was supposed to be Tamora and I am pretty sure it is an easy elegance rose, Yellow Submarine. ) They have gone on to thrive. Really just be outstanding altogether-- and so I was forced to change my opinion of them. They are outstanding roses, for the kind of rose they are. Which is still not my type and so I am still going to give them away, because I don't like roses without fragrance and my garden is too small to leave them there.. I bet you could trade those roses in a heartbeat for something you liked.

Hi Seil, I agree with the above comments. One thing I didn't see mentioned is pH. Have you done a pH test? Roses prefer slightly acidic. 6.5 is ideal. Will still be happy in 6.3 to 6.8 range. You can buy a cheap pH Test Kit at any garden store. Some of the drug stores have them too. If your pH is too high or too low, it will lock up the nutrients so your roses can't get to them . . . even though you are feeding your roses. Water was mentioned as well. Rule of thumb is 2-3 gallons of water per week. Depending on the season and your climate, they may need more. Deep watering is best. Meaning don't water a little every day. (I made this mistake in the beginning). We want to encourage roots to go deep into the soil. Therefore, it's better to water twice or three times a week for a longer period. Also good to check the drainage. Roses don't like "wet feet". Easiest way to do this is to dig a hole (6" should do). Fill it with water either in the morning or evening. If the water has not drained within a few hours, you have a drainage issue. Can add 1/3 perlite or sand to help with this. It's a lot of info we've given you. It's hard to tell offhand what the issue is. Might be a combination. Just need to eliminate things one at a time. Hope this helps. Melanie

Thanks so much for the help! See .. I thought feeding all of those cats out of one big feeder is very wrong too. Thanks for validating one of my concerns. We have the five dogs and there is no way I'd feed them out of one big dish, they all have their own dishes and a few their own eating areas due to when they were strays it caused food aggression issues with other dogs ( not people ). If left to their own being fed out of a large dish, the food aggression dogs would drive the others out and fights would ensue to regain the bowl .. basically everything that's happening to this cat. So, I do blame the people for not getting involved on her behalf. She's an adult cat, my DH ( who had cats as a child ) thinks she's maybe 6 - 8 years old ?? I think right now I'm going to try to get her back into shape, she's eating for me and she seems very content to hang out down here now. As we sat on the porch last night, she hung out on my DH's lap and soaked up the attention. We live in NC and it's been one of the hardest states hit by unemployment, the papers are filled with people giving away their animals. The rescues and humane socities are also filled .. we went through the whole thing with trying to find Daisy ( the Basset my DHbrought home last year ) a home or into rescue and never could, so we just kept her. I'm also going to call and talk to our vet about a dewormer for her, they'll be able to give me an idea how much it would run and if they need to see her first. They are pretty good about giving us a break when the animal is a stray, they did with Daisy and her whole heart worm treatment. Thanks again everyone, hopefully we can get her looking a little better soon :)

Well,I sprayed all my roses too,then it came a rain and washed it off and the deer attacked them again.I am only about 8-10 blcks from downtown area,so wouldn't think deer would come this close,but,they are hitting my yard several times a week.They are very pretty,but oh how I hate these things in my yard.

Jean, I'm so sorry and once mama has shown Bambi where the food is, they'll remember and be back every year for more. They ate mine up and then started in on my bushes up as high as they could reach, up above 6' or so the bushes were 10 tall and very bushy. I used to tell visitors it was my special bush architecture look. Thing was the first 4 years or so the 8 bushes were planted they wouldn't touch them until a drought hit, then they learned the taste and every year after that, rain or not for other vegetation they came to eat them. Besides what ever rose straggled long after I gave up trying to plant new ones. I am so glad I don't have that any more to deal with, but you have my heartfelt sympathy!

Oh Jean! I know what you are going thru here. I rarely catch the little B!&@#%$ in the act, but they are here more than ever before and the repellent spray just isn't stopping them anymore. I was blaming the fires for them being so bold and eating everything in sight, but now I'm thinking it's the vegetables that I planted in huge pots at the side of the garage that's attracting them in more. That's where they hit the worse. Time to toss them out and see if that will maybe lessen their visits. Next yr, I'm going to seriously work on a solution to these varmints. I plan to put up tall conduit post with holes drilled and I'll run heavy gauge wire thru them around the perimeter and hang reflective ribbons allover. Hopefully that will stop them from coming in to the yard. Then I might add a "Scarecrow" motion-detected sprinkler to a couple of spots in the yard too. But this season, I have too much going on to take the time now to get that all set up. It's very aggravating tho having to deal with these pests, isn't it??

My condolences on the deer!
ItÂs been a tough year here too. I ended up installing deer netting around my vegetable garden and spraying liquid fence everywhere.
It has worked on the deer so far. Now if I could just keep the rabbits out of my vegetables! The little boogers ate holes in the deer netting and come and go as they please!
