Oh my goodness. Your last picture is the absolute SWEETEST looking rose I've seen lately! She reminds me of my little one at that age. Same *happy* expression. lol. I sure do miss those years! Looks like you've got some nice roses as well. I intend to get Abraham D one of these days. Ambridge is nice too. Thanks for sharing..especially the little one! April

Love your Happy Child rose in that little, wee pot. Looks incongruous to have that big rose bloom on that little plant!

I grew it for 3 years (own root from Heirloom) because I wanted a compact rose for a container. I liked the flower form, the fragrance (marvelous to my nose), the color (bright yellow)and the above average disease resistance. It's repeat was average, and its stems were short and a tad on the weak side. However in the 3rd year a friend of mine commented that hers had a few Octopus arms growing, and then a few weeks later mine did too. I didn't wait around to see what would happen next. I gave mine away. In your cooler zone with a shorter growing period you may never have this problem.

The grafted/own-root issue isn't always clear. I find that my grafted roses are much more vigorous, especially the first 3-5 years until the own-root catch up. And by burying the graft 3-4" deep, I find that eventually the grafted rose becomes an own-root rose, as strong feeder roots develop along the buried shank above the graft. I have dug up quite old grafted roses that were buried deeply (ones that I removed because they were blackspot prone) and found very little root activity below the graft and lots above. However, if a rose is quite tender and I really want to try to establish it in my garden, I will try an own-root. There are also many roses that are only available as own-root, so if I want them that's the route I take. I have several specific roses (Tamora, Dainty Bess, Golden Celebration) where I have both a grafted and an own-root specimen. They have been in place for a number of years now and the own-root have caught up and they are doing equally well.

New Dawn will be OK own root. So long as the climate is warm enough to grow it at all. I can grow it, and people around me can grow it. They can't grow it ten miles north, and Jim can't grow it. However, it should be hardier than Viking Queen. John Cabot as an own root grows very, v e r y s l o w l y. It took about ten years to get a big flush from it, and a few more to get any repeat. I often wonder if one of the problems people have getting repeat from the big Explorers is that they take so long to really get going, and people lose patience. Yes, the issue is that I'm too cold for the normal Austins to do well. But I'm not the only one in this climate.

Nancy, having lived in Florida I can compare summers by saying the ones in Oklahoma are as hot and humid and miserable as the ones in Florida. The only difference (aside from the size of the bugs) is that our misery is shorter - say from mid May to around the first of October. I lived inland from the Cape area in Florida....I don't remember there being any problem with Happy Child because of the heat, but it's been awhile since it went to greener pastures.

WOO WEE! To pretty. I love your precious little one. She reminds me of "Boo" on Monsters Inc. So, so sweet. Did you get all of these from Heirloom? None of mine have buds or blooms except for Happy Child. I love it. Judy

prettypetals, I got all of them but Ambridge from heirloom. Ambridge was the biggest surprise for me. I planted her (bareroot) At the end of June and this is her second full flush of roses. Margaret Merrill opened all the way today and is positively stunning
