What's Blooming For You That Isn't GOLD?
Comments (19)indigo (indigofera), passiflora incarnata, echinacea, great blue lobelia, hydrangea 'Limelight', Japanese anemone 'Windflower', nepeta, calamenthe, scarlet runner beans, aster 'Ghengis Khan' (this false aster blooms non-stop from early summer until frost as long as I keep shearing spent blooms), roses: 'Pilgrim', 'Tradescant', 'Peggy Martin', glossy abelia (hummingbird & butterfly magnet). Monarda is starting its second flush. Garden phlox 'David' and 'Franz Schubert' are looking awfully tired after all the heat, but still a little bloom coming. Salvias should be on second flush, but I cut them back late. Hosta 'Guacamole' should be blooming now, but is a bit too shaded this year as the magnolia has grown ... time to move it. Chelone 'Hot Lips' and sedum 'Autumn Joy' will soon be in bloom. In dappled shade, fern-leaf bleeding heart (dicentra eximia) is putting out new leaves and will soon have its second flush of bloom. All of the above are pink, lavender to blue, or white, with the exception of roses 'Pilgrim' (pale yellow) and 'Tradescant' (deep red), monarda (red), and the scarlet runner beans which are, of course, scarlet. I don't have one, but I see that the crape myrtles around here are all still blooming vigorously....See MorePineapple Sage is blooming!
Comments (3)they say trim it down only to a foot or 2 above ground & mulch well. that's always worked for me- mine came back for 10 years, then finally got so woody in the center it pooped out. you can always take a cutting as insurance- they root easily in water. you can use either the leaves or the flowers for tea. i've only done it a few times- i do drink lots of herbals, but am lazy and normally just buy them prepackaged. uliginosa blooms for me til first frost, as does b&b. lipstick and some of the other reds & pinks are still blooming for me, too....See MoreShouldn't my pineapple sage be blooming by now?
Comments (8)I'm thinking mine isn't getting enough sun but it was the one spot that gets adequate moisture in a dry bed. With any luck(weather)it will bloom before frost. Hmm..just thinking , probably good it's not blooming because it's grown half across a stairway from the porch. The hummingbirds and carpenter bees will fight over the blooms I'm sure. And, I'm going to need to use a different door for a while (allergic to stings)....See MorePineapple sage ???
Comments (21)Yeah Pineapple sage I wouldn't recommend to places up north. It's good here (I still have a vagrant hummer) but up north stragglers are much less likely. Love their smell though. For a sage that gets hummers before they migrate in cooler zones I've heard many people praise their Phyllis Fancy salvia, rating it their top plant even which surprised me because it's a purple-tinted white color with dark purple calyx (not orange or red).Like I know hummers use many colors but usually the most preferred plants tend to be red, orange, hot pink, or violet. @Calletina I've found salvias pretty forgiving about being moved in general but I'd still wait until spring since you are a region with frost (if you were zone 8 or zone 9 maybe you could get away with it but zone 7 is pushing it). In the meantime you can always prune if it's in the way of anything....See Morewcgypsy
