Salvia bloom issues

Just as my S. atrocyanea and S. dombeyi were about to bloom, the inflorescences shriveled up. I cut the dead part off, and they are now branching out. What could be the problem? A customer at the Strybing sale told me that there is a tiny worm that attacks her S. dombeyi flowers, and she hand picks the worms off. I was really excited to see both of these in flower (for the first time), so this was of course a disappointment. Any advice is appreciated!
