Austin Open Salvia Garden

I know some of you live in Austin Tx. I want to

extend my invation to visit my open garden on

Sunday May 23 it is open from 10-2. Some Salvia's in bloom will be:greggii, microphylla,several different hybrids,coccinea several forms,darcyi,farinacea severalforms,blepharophylla severalforms and miniata.

More not in bloom as well.

There are other plants in flower also My Acanthus some Justicias,Dicliptera budding and other different plant mixed w/Salvias.Some native some not.

Sunny, I can't speak for sure about NH (never having been there), but if you mean is it hardy through Zone 5, probably--HMF lists it that way, anyway. Definitely fragrant. Fairly good (but not perfect) disease-resistance. Gorgeous colored blooms. Fairly good at re-blooming. It has a lot going for it and I'd plant a second one if I had room for it. You should know, however, that it has the tendency to stretch out sideways--can get quite wide rather than tall--the ends of the branches getting quite heavy--I sometimes need to prop up the ends so they don't droop to the ground. But I'm getting a bit better at spring pruning them, so it isn't as much of a problem as before. I'm thinking that a light mid-summer prune might help keep that under control--at least it did this year, and I will try it again next year. The color and shape of the bloom is so wonderful--you'll love it. Kate

Some of my favorite combinations in the fall are Salvia regla 'Jame' with white Camellia 'Snow Flurry', S. blepharophylla with seedlings of Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Purpurea', S. greggii 'Flame' and Yucca 'Color Guard', S. miniata with variegated Duranta and Cordyline terminalis, and S. greggii 'Lipstick' with single apricot Chrysanthemum. I also like the bold leaves of the colocasias with salvias, though you have to be careful about matching up cultural preferences or else keep them in pots. I've been very pleased with the combination of S. puberala and Colocasia 'Black Magic', Justicia spicigara and summer wave blue torenia.

My address is 12004 wander lane Austin Tx. 78750 Being open to the public we cannot provide "adult drinks" There will be some snacks and a few drinks Water etc... There will a few plants for sale if we can work out some- thing with a local grower.I will need to keep this in mind next year. Let me know what you would like and we do our best at getting some cuttings going. I am working on a website but it will be some time before it is up and running. We will try & post some pictures after our tour.S blepharophylla "Diablo" and "Sweet Numbers" are blooming.
the first Blooms of S.darcyi and miniata just opened today.

What a beautiful garden you have, Art, full of wonderful daylilies and salvias. Thank you so much for letting us come and see it today. It must be fun to watch the patterns of color and form appear and change and overlap each day, as some plants come into bloom and others finish.

It is great putting names w/faces everyone we had a great time.Annie thanks for the link to your song! I may try this again in the fall when the Salvia greggii,microphylla
and more are in color and the weather is cooler.

Art, I finally have a stable S. blepharophylla `Dulces Nombres' (or `Sweet Names'). Along with S. oxyphora, S. lasiantha, S. curviflora, S. stolonifera, I have some good seedlings from Robin Middleton and Ginny Hunt coming along for new stock plants.
