My cassia is blooming it's fool head off!

too bad Ai am a bit of a tecfho idiot and can't use a brand new, perfectly good digital camera I have...its magnificient ( the cassia that is!)

Mine is just starting! I sure hope we don't have an early frost. I love 'em

I know that they can be started from seed, but do you know if you can root cuttings??

If so, when? Maybe when they finish blooming?

Sorry! I have no idea about the cassia, just admired a neighbors from last year and just had to have one.

We also love to eat the blossoms! We try to plan a dinner party to coincide with bloom time each spring and serve each person a blossom floating on a cold soup. I love them on cucumber-yogurt-garlic soup, or here is a fun recipe for a cold asparagus soup my hubby dreamed up: http://www.hungryagain.net/?p=43 Notice the chive blossom in the picture? That is actually a half blossom, floating cut side down because our dinner was a little early that year. I love the potato salad idea; we will definitely try that one this year!

From what I've seen from mine, some very large blooms come from the new thick 2ft+ stems that grow from the base each year (some as large as my head!), while the smaller ones (baseball/softball sized) come from the "lateral buds" off old stems. If the stems you cut were thick and had large swelled buds at the top, I'd say you lopped off some potentially big blooms, providing there was indeed a healthy undead bud up there to begin with. Lots of terminal buds seem to die off, especially in zone 5, so it's possible these were already dead. Whatever the case, gradually pruning to your desired shape while taking off leggy stems will eventually pay off. And getting multiple ES's to grow at the same rate will take more equal light and soil conditions.

Hi, and thanks for the response. I went back and looked at the site and I was confused. It isn't Park Seed, it's another nursery with the name Park in it. I actually went ahead and ordered one from Paradise Gardens in Tennessee. I tried so hard to find one closer to home, but no dice. Plus, this place sends bigger plants, so I hope to get good results. I don't have sandy soil at all. I have black gumbo, but it is in spots, so I won't know until I start digging the hole, probably in a week or so, since they say they ship in one to two weeks. I don't know why they take so long, but I appreciate the honesty about it. I know I will have to amend the soil. I had some garden topsoil delivered, and I was going to ask about the wisdom of using that, maybe mixed with some compost and aged manure. This spot is windy, though, so I will be protecting it until the hydrangea is well established. If it blocks the morning sun and prevents blooms the first year, then so be it. I'll let you all know how it goes, and hopefully, I'll have pics to send.

Mine has never ever self seeded. New trunks only come from the base. The branches on my S. capsularis also grow horizontally! current pic. lateral & sprawling. current pic. the grass plant started blooming purple plumes at the same time as S. Capsularis. beautiful! A few years ago, it was shapes like an upright water fountain. I could literally walk underneath it. old pic. quarterly pruned to get a fountain shape 2013 old pic. Heavy pruning to get a fountain shape 2013 Hurrican Matthew took down more than half it because a carpenter ant nest had loosened the soil at the base. Wind cracked roots in half. Matthew also took the white wooden picket fence too. So, Now I'm letting her grow like crazy to reestablish strong center stalks. In a few months, Ill do a hard prune, removing anything lower than 6 feet which grows lateral, to get back to fountain shape. Sorry to gush. I'm sure you can tell she's my absolute favorite! I await her November blooms every year. Tell me about yours :)

Cool parrots! I used to habe a mitred conure as a kid, but one day he chewed TROUGH a screened in porch...and flew South. Hope it he made it to at least Daytona before the winter hit. Oh well! I live in the Olde Towne Subdivision...we really do need to have a an Island GW get together lunch or drink sometime...Did I promise you a Passionfruit seedling? Got one left that isn't spoken for!

Awe, the poor baby birdy...I know what you mean about them escaping tho. The cockatoo blew clean through a screened window one day - just flew right through it, leaving a great big rip. Found him in a bush right by the window, and he stepped up just sweet as could be when I went to retrieve him.

Drinks sounds good.. you can do so many things with passionfruit, but my tastes are pedestrian enough that I only make passionade ( pulp, water, sugar) or passionfruit daiguiris ( all of the above but with liberal amounts of rum). Got to go to Hilton Head and spend Monday night, but am free to drop off your seedling sometime this week. You can email me your address or whatever. Have a good one!
