too big of a pot?

I can't find a direct answer to my question so I'm turning here where I know I will be given accurate information.

This guy is my second plant I bought when I started my love for plants (about 3 months ago).

I've been trying to read everything I can about all types of plants and well I think others experiences will be the best for my question(s).
Is this pot too big for the plant? I repotted with perlite and cactus palm mix from HD. It was more perlite than the potting soil.
The tips of a few of them seem to be harden up and breaking off. With others experiences what are some tips for his care because im obviously doing something wrong. Thanks in advance.

Not at all, there's barely room in there for new pups to emerge. Looks fine to me! Could you add another pic that shows the problem with the tips?

I only have one other big pot---an old black kettle for soap making/outdoor cooking----and it is full of blue lobelias, white geraniums, and red with white eye geraniums for the red white and blue spot. I removed the 2 orange Gerberas from the 12" pot and put them up in a brick flower box where I am doing more orange yellow and purple theme stuff------Spanish Eyes Thunbergia with Purple Cathedral Bells growing on a trellis----lots of purple Allysum, African daisies[orange, yellow, and white], and purple petunias. I left just the yellow Gerbera with the 2 Purple w/yellow eyes million bells in the 12 inch pot. Hope it will be okay. It is a very deep pot [actually an old brown ceramic type pipe about a yard tall]. I think that I am going to love Gerberas too. :-] Thanks, Aunt Lou

Violet too big for any pots

Hi Dave, Good questions. Irina gave you good answers to them. I like to put in my two cents though if I may. 1. African violets don't benefit from having too deep of a root ball. I have heard that anything deeper than 3 in. does the plant no good and some even say that there is a law of diminishing returns if the root ball is deeper than 3 in. When I repot a violet I take off the bottom row of leaves or any other leaves that don't look healthy. I then scrape the stem, like I would a carrot, and clean it up. This promotes root growth on the bare stem. I then measure from the bottom most leaf and cut the root ball straight across. If the bare stem or neck is longer than 3 in. then the whole root ball gets cut off. 2. As Irina said, an African violet can grow a new root system very easily. As Irina recommended, put the newly repotted violet in a clear plastic bag. This acts as an incubator and keeps the humidity high for the plant, that has no root system, to absorb water and transport it up to the leaves. I like to leave the plant and pot in the plastic bag for one month. That is about how long it takes a violet to develop a substantial root system. I hope this helps, Larry

Yippee, I have the same problem. I will re-pot mine this fall after all of the bloom heads are out of the way, but I don't think it really matters if you do it in early Spring or Fall. I think it's just best for the plant to be fairly dormant when you do it......yg

If you are moving or storing the plant you remove it each winter by sawing around the 5 gal with a key hole saw or a toothed knife. If you leave the plants you saw it every 3 years or so and change the soil. No extra holes in the 7. It has plenty. If you have clay soil you might make the hole you are planting into bigger than the 7 by a few inches and deeper and put pea gravel around the bottom half and under the pot and clay around the top half. This just gives the water more room to move out of the pot. The extra holes in the 5 just let more roots grow outward and is not for drainage. It is not a big job since each year the roots are fairly small so the cutting is rather quick and with little effort. You are cutting on the outside of the pot so you cut and pull up the plant in the 5 gal to store. Next year you set it in the middle of the 7 and fill new soil around. Since you are only using 2 gallons of soil, unless you have many plants, it is not worth the time to sift the old cut roots out of the old soil which you could reuse for several years. And I just seen this too. On the edges of them seem to be cracking or really dry whereas before I repotted it, it wasn't like that.

Looks like mechanical damage. If a tip is bent, it will look normal for a long time, days/weeks, until the damage is finally visible, much longer than it would take on most other plants. Frost bite can also do that, if that possibly happened to your plant.

That last pic - did you sneeze when you took it? Not trying to get down on you, but it's so fuzzy, I just giggled when I saw it, cuz I couldn't SEE it. Please tell it's not a total bi-focal failure on my part!

What does mechanical damage mean?
The plant has been inside since the day I bought it.

Smiles! I just put a really fuzzy pic in another discussion. Hope it gets some giggles too!

Mechanical = something that happened to it, like getting bent, scratched, something chewed on it a long time ago... something other than a virus, disease, current/ongoing pest problem.

When leaves get beat-up looking, they are unable to heal. If you don't like their appearance, you can cut them off at the soil level, (and use them to make new plants.) There are also pics of propagating in water around this forum if you do a search...

hmm sounds like what happened then. After all I got it from Lowes on a Saturday evening when the rush calmed down . lol....So I wouldn't even have to pull the whole plant out of the container to propagate the leaves? I read the thread you posted, thanks a lot, it was very informative. I have a few other little plants that I would like to try this on before I go messing with big guy. I love these plants. And I do want more of them so maybe this is fro me. I think it will go well . After all I am only 4 months into this LOL..

Glad you're having fun with your new plants! That's what it's all about.

Don't feel bad about the mechanical damage, these things happen. I dropped a big 5-gallon bucket of Sans upside down and bent the tips of about half of the leaves. In time, it will look like it did again.

"So I wouldn't even have to pull the whole plant out of the container to propagate the leaves?" That's right, you can just cut them off.

Just ask if you get stuck or confused. Are your other little plants also Sans?

I love these plants. I use to HATE all plants, flowers and anything dealing with a garden.
I really enjoy plants now. But I think I am lusting for them as I have over 70 and been at this for 4 months at the most (lol) They are plants that I can deal with.

WOW that's a big bucket to drop.

Ok so I am going to cut one off tomorrow. I will do it to the soil line. Thanks for the advice and your willingness to help. I have 5 smaller ones, in 4 inch pots. they are all different too.
