Big Bed Little Bank Account

I have the most fabulous problem! A brand new bed about 60 feet long and 9 feet wide at its widest places. It has a curving organic shape. The soil will finished being amended tomorrow. Unfortunely, I have very little money to work with, so I was thinking...SEEDS! O.K., I have zero experience in starting seeds. I'd like to sow them directly into the bed. I'm in Valdosta, Georgia (17 miles from the Florida border)parts of the bed are in full sun. Some parts in part-shade. I will only be growing flowers or foliage plants. Don't care if they're perennials or annuals. I love blue, pink, white, purple, yellow. Any ideas, suggestions, words to the wise, hints, warnings? Thanks for any input. And yes, I have serious spring fever.

You should get a container of that mixed flower seed at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. It comes in a big shaker type can. My neighbor used that stuff last year and it went bannanas. All kinds of color.

Some great reseeding annuals are cosmos, four o' clocks, and tithonia...plant California poppies in the fall. I fill my bed with perennials that multiply quickly. Cannas for sun and ginger lillies for part shade. Coreopsis, shasta daisies, and ruella multiply vegetatively. Instead of planting lots of new stuff every year, I end up weeding out the plants I don't want...enjoy...deb

If you owe the bank a million or so ... ... you got a problem! If you owe the bank 100 million (or, maybe, a billion) ... ... they got a problem!! And when all of the banks owe big buckets of debt ... ... when they run to the government for a bail-out ... ... the government's got a problem (so they figure)!!! Can anyone (with a certain measure of memory) say, "Savings and Loan"?? When the profits are running - they're private. When there's blood about to hit the financial streets - then the big financial guys seek a government bailout. But it'd be terrribly gauche to call that ... "wellfare"!! That's for the little guys who would rather collect it than work. Smells about the same, to me. But they have to find a scapegoat ... so Bear Stearns gets a tin can tied to their tail ... ... and J P Morgan (that earlier ate Chase) ... ... gets a good deal. ole joyful

USAA is pretty much for those who are in the military or who have a family member in the military. They've loosen up a bit over the years, but I think there still has to be some connection to the military. As for the OP, I don't think you can put all the blame on the bank. The OP sent her son off to open a specific type of bank account. At the bank, he was told about the other types of accounts the bank has. Sure, I think there was a bit of upselling, but I also think the bank officer was doing his/her job in making sure that the customer knew all the options. Then the OP's son made a choice. And that choice was to ignore his parent's advice and make a decision of his own. So yes, the bank had a part in this. But I think that some of the blame needs to be directed at the son, who didn't follow orders. Not saying the son did anything wrong--maybe the new account met his needs better than the two separate accounts his parent wanted. But the son didn't do what he was told to do. I don't think the bank bears the full responsibility for that.

Stargazzer, let me clarify my explanation as I think we may be discussing two different things. "Step up basis" is not 'a state thing'. It is the IRS definition regarding estate taxes. Yes, there are many ways to deed property. But not all of them are tax-advantaged to the beneficiary. Being ignorant of these consequences can be financially painful. Now, admittedly the OP's SO is probably at a low risk for dying from this surgery! But my point was that this couple has been together for a lengthy period of time already, yet has not made a real effort to consider what MIGHT happen on that future date when something goes very wrong. Because....eventually something will. We all die, and not at the same time; that's a fact of life that is inevitable. No matter what state you live in, or how much your total and/or separate assets are, if you want your assets to go to someone else, it behooves you to find out what is the best way to pass your assets on, with the least amount of hassle and the least cost to the survivor. Loving someone, but leaving behind a legal/financial mess - or even worse, accidentally disinheriting them - is not a kind bequest to anyone. What is the point in leaving someone 50% of the house, for example, if they can't pay the taxes due upon death because the legalities ignored the tax consequences of the original joint decision? For the majority of people, setting up their legal and financial affairs properly takes very little real time, once they stop procrastinating, LOL. There are ways for SOs to leave their various assets to one another without need to resort to a Revocable Trust, for instance. And there is absolutely no time like the present for the OP to begin getting started! These are things (wills, durable healthcare POA, financial POA) that one should do BEFORE something bad happens, because you never know when Life/Chance/Luck may decide to take that freedom of choice away from you.

After many years of observing GEM's extreamly poor service for Sam's Club member, the bank has hit a new low by redefining the meaning of a simple word in the English language. If I lost my credit card and it was replaced with a new one (new acciount number)I could understand the reason for reporting that fact to credit bureaus. When the primary account holder of my Sam's card passed away, Sams changed my standing from secondary (user) to primary, with a new account number and membership ID card. After reporting that I lost my credit card to the credit bureaus, GEMB refuses to correct the delibert insertion of false information to my credit file. The GEMB supervisor stated that I "LOST" my old credit card NUMBER when Sam's Club changed it to a new one. I never lost my existing card, nor was it ever stolen. GEMB's is violating the Fair Credit Reportring Act, and as usualy blames it on Sam's Club. It seems that Sam's club would have had to alow me to keep my old account number when changing my status from secondary to primary in order to keep GEMB from flagging my reports with untrue information. No wonder GEMB is at the center of so much fraud. The company simply has no ethics of its own. It does not help resolve fraud issues that people do have, while the bank insists on creating eronious credit information where there is no lost or stolen credit card involved. Someone asked what GEMB stood for. The name aboviously is derived from the parent company's corporate policy. GE (General Electric) Means ..... Whenever contemplating the purchase of any product made by GE, I think of the routine customer abuse it provides through GEMB and then buy any product but GE. It is a shame that Sam's club refuses to sever its relationship with such an arrogant, irresponsible, incompetent financial institution. It probly has something to do with the amount of money that Sam's makes selling GE products.

Thanks for the tips. I have 4 o'clock seeds that I've started. I'll directly sow or plant Cosmos, Cleome, some Canna bulbs, Lilly bulbs, Anemone coronaria, purple millet, envy green zinnias, english daisies, teddy bear dwarf sun flower, verbena bonariensis, heavenly blue morning glories, passion vine, convolvulus and other seeds. I am also starting purple wave petunia. First time I've ever tried starting seeds indoors at all. Very excited and a bit nervous.

i'm a bit late posting this but I would suggest some 'bones' of the garden, i.e. a small tree and a few shrubs (preferably flowering types). Having to redo that whole big garden each season would be alot of work.

I was in exactly the same situation last year. Huge border - 100 ft long and about 16 ft at it's widest. No money. I started LOTS and LOTS of seed. Not direct sowing though. I have found the best method for me is to use some seed starting mix in a styrofoam cup. By the time it has outgrown the cup, it is probably ready for planting. I learned this the hard way after lots of repotting last summer. I sowed everything outdoors in the shade. I had alot of luck this way. Must be the humidity here is good for seed starting. Anyway, I am starting alot of seeds again this year the same way because the border is still not as full as I would like - I am going for a very lush and overflowing effect. But it is a long way toward being there - just waiting for lots of growth!

It is too late for English daisies - they do not like hot weather and do best in winter. Be careful with morning glories & Passion vine - both are very invasive + you need a stucture for them to climb.

Good luck! Growing from seeds is fun.
