Salvia and lavender

Do salvia and lavender like the same conditions? And is there a place I can go to look at a chart of bloom periods/heights/colors of salvias? I have a new bed by my driveway that is too far from the house to water. I am amending the bed a little bit but mostly for drainage. I was hoping to mix salvias and lavenders of different types and bloom periods. Also, I was interested to see that salvias like a little lime - alkaline soil - didn't know that. I'll have to go check the soil requirements of lavenders. I saw S. "Black and Blue" last year and fell in love with it.

They will need water at least the first year until they are established. Then some need little, moderate or regular water. In hot weather Betsy says - plants - Guaraniticas, should be watered every 7 - 10 days. These are guidelines. I usually water my lavender deep once a week. Course that depends on the soil they are planted in too. If you do a little home work you can be successful and be rewarded. I would think "blk & blue" would be an annual for you so you would have to water. I think of hauling a watering can around as weight - bearing exercise :)

Salvia and Lavandula are both Mediterranean plants, meaning they like wet winters and dry summers. They are definitely compatible. As Phoebe said, you will need to water both plants regularly until they develop good root systems. After that, they are drought tolerant. That doesn't mean no water, but you can get away with water much less water than other plants.

Have you grown Lavender previously or seen it grow in your area? In zone 5, your selection will be limited.

Can't help you on the division problem. I've never divided mine. A thought occurred to me. Are you sure you have May Night and not another salvia? I remember now that some years ago, I started out with a salvia that had some kind of German name, if I'm remembering correctly. It is readily available in many nurseries and catalogs. After a couple years, I tossed it--because it sprawled a lot. Then, after researching, I got May Night because it does not have the sprawling problem that the other had. And it has not sprawled all these years I've grown it. I bet you actually have a different salvia. The general color and appearance of the two were very similar--just that difference in sprawling. Maybe try a May Night next spring and see if it performs better than the (fake?) one you have now. Just a thought. Kate

I didnt do that many this year, mostly common annuals I normally would do anyways, but I didnt have any failiures at all, 100% germination for me, all commercial seed as well. I know in the past, regardless of where I get them, I barely ever get any larkspur or salvia, Salvia however I learned grows great under lights, so the few times I did them , I just potted them up late in the season on the heating mat and they did very well.. they also barely need hardening off, so no issues there either. Celosia is another hard one and kmotgg are both terrible here to try. I keep going back to larkspur, probably tried 20 different jugs over the years and got a measly 4-5 plants out of that... Ive given up on them completely.

I did start them in spring Tina, but I'm not sure they were supposed to elongate. I believe if I would have waited until late summer/early fall they would have remained rosettes and flowered the following spring. As they are now the stem below them is about 2' tall and they haven't flowered yet LOL! Here is what they look like when they do flower.... PS. Partial sun in CA, especially CCCty, is like full sun in many areas. My roses do pretty well in similar conditions. On the downside, they aren't always beautiful, especially in the 6 weeks after being pruned back in late winter. I think most camellias get bigger than 4' tall, don't they? I'm just getting into them, and it's hard to find any that are listed at less than 10' mature size. 6' is a midget in camellias, it seems. You could always try the ever-dependable Euryops with its yellow daisy-like flowers. There's two varieties - dark green leafed and a gray-green leafed that is shorter (which means it tops out 4' instead of 6'). Also, there's a couple of varieties of dwarf Rhaphiolepsis indica shrubs that only get to 4', with lovely pink flowers once or twice a year. Very handsome dark green shiny foliage is evergreen, too. It needs good air circulation or it's prone to anthracnose. It has a lovely open shape and grows quickly - mine has reached the 3-1/2' mark in from a quart container, in less than four years, with very little summer water.

Hi Vicki - gorgeous - I see you must have great conditions for these 2. That salvia is quite large isn't it? I'd like some large ones like that too.

I planted Lavender Vera and Munstead last year in another area that has great drainage and they are wonderful. Typically our heavy clay doesn't do lavender justice. I've found I have to condition the soil quite a bit and raise the beds to grow salvia. I get small plants from Bluestone and am going in a couple weeks to buy a half flat of liner sized lavenders - that will be 36, and another half flat of salvias. They have a good selection for zone 5 so now the task will be to sort through the descriptions. I've grown Salvia May Night at my previous home in a raised bed and it did fine but it never achieved the size I've seen in photos. By now it should be gargantuan but I'm not there to see it.
