2013 Growlist Thread (for everyone!)

Since tomorrow is the last day of 2012, I thought I would post the annual growlist thread, where we can all ooooh and aaaah over each other's lists, and of course find more things to add to our own list!

I am still finalizing my list, but will put all of the chinense and baccatums in the dirt within the next couple of weeks, so I will come back and post once it is a done deal. The annums will get sown in 4 to 6 weeks, so may be tweaking that part of my list for a while yet. I did put a few Manzano seeds in some Rapid Rooters yesterday, so I guess my 2013 season has officially gotten underway.

Feel free to post your tentative or final lists here. It's always fun to see what choices everyone makes!

Well, assuming they survive (a good bet) I will be growing the over-wintered plants:

Mammoth jalapeno (x2)
Normal jalapeno (+1 I hope)
Serrano
Cubanelle (+1 I hope)
Cayenne
Cowhorn
Fatalii (one is quite enough)

I have 30-40 more varieties, thanks to The Seed Fairy and other kind contributors, but somewhat less than an acre to plant them in, so I may just try to germinate a few of them and let natural selection makes its .. err .. selection.

Too bad I am limited because of a move this summer. Here is my list, short as it is, I think it's the best selection.

Ghost aka Bhut Jolokia
Galapagos ( C. galapagoense )
White Habanero
Tepin or Black Pearl or Chocolate Habanero still undecided on the last choice. I just can't picture transporting any more than 4 plants come June.

Molie, I really like those 'Percy Wiseman'. I like that your pic shows the color evolution of the shrubs as they go from bud to bloom. If I didn't have a constant war with deer and Rhodies, I'd love to plant one. LOL!! I always dream of winning the lottery! Not for plants, but for a deer fence, another well, a long fence along the side..... We didn't do any of the rock work ourselves. We were VERY lucky in that our piece of property had all the rock buried on it from when they blasted through the road. As they dug the foundation, well and gas lines, all the rock was coming up. We saved it in a corner of the yard and a couple years after the house was done we brought someone in to put it all to good use. One of my favorite things he did was make us a stone staircase. Pixielou, I would love to see a broad pic of all those iris in bloom. It looks like you have a beautiful collection. You also just ID'd my clematis. My mom gave it to me and probably told me the name which I promptly forgot. I do have a bad habit of not keeping track of the names of things I have planted. Steve, that Itoh is KILLER!!! I'll definitely have to keep my eyes peeled for that one. I just picked up 'Bartzella' but I think that one is going to be so "common" when it's all said and done. Did you get that one locally, or mail order? Some of them can break the bank! Kpaquette, I love your garden. You have a beautiful house. I agree with Nhbabs about moving the urns just into the garden to widen your entryway. I love those urns by the way. Do you have to repaint them often? Do you keep them out all winter? I really like the way you used foliage in the garden for a lot of interest. Which baptisia is that? It is so healthy and huge. Can you get us a pic of the entire front yard? It looks like you really have some great curb appeal. The slate path is beautiful.

Friends, You are very welcome! It was a pleasure! I, too, was impressed with the quantity in the bunches, and also with them being "just the right size". That's my interpretation of neither too big to adapt, or too small to thrive. You may recall I ordered 19 bunches last year, and by the time the onions arrived I was in a new job that doesn't allow time for gardening. Seedpapa planted them all. This year, he set the limit at 2 bunches, so I only ordered 5. The overstuffed bunches kept him busy last weekend. We are still eating onions from last year. The ones we stored so carefully in the basement started sprouting about 8 weeks ago, but the ones we never managed to get out of the garage are still good. Go figure!

Thanks to all the beautiful blooms. I went out yesterday and got a 1 gallon size Karl Rosenfield peony for $15. It's young and has not bloomed nor does it have any buds. For that price, I can wait! I ran out of time and was unable to put it in the ground today. Thanks to the picture of Claire's Knock Out rose, I went out today and got one for $11.50. It's a left over from last year and very leggy. The woman who takes care of the plants there told me to prune it 'back hard' and 'feed it' once a week or every other week to force it to grow more stems and leaves. Oh, I should have taken a before and after picture. I have to say that it's awful looking right now. After pruning, I re-potted it in a 3 gallon container. I think it will stay in the pot to recuperate and grow. I will plant it in a couple of months. Or, should I just winter the whole pot in the garage and plant it next spring? -Tina

I'm a very jealous mole seeing all your glorious gardens. My gardens took a double whammy hit this August. First, the heat/dry conditions which affected so many things and then --- on a very positive note --- my daughter, who lives in France with her family, has been here for a month. It's great to spend time with grandchildren --- the gardens played second fiddle to my family for sure this year! So --- no photos from me but many compliments and plants that are going on my 2014 Wish List. Where to start ? T2D, I love that darling Anemonopsis macrophylla with her shy blossoms. I have the later fall Japanese Anemones, which spread like mad. Does this self seed? Bill, I, too, really admire your stonework and the garden areas you've created. I see your Portulacas are running flush like mine, which self-seeded from last year and are all over the gardens. I love the Crocosmia (had one years ago) and that Hesperaloe parvifolia, two plants that I'll have to search out for next year. They both make beautiful statements. Is that Lithodura beneath it? I was inspired to put some in after seeing yours. One clump died but the other has spread over several feet. Claire, my sedums are still green, but my Phlox 'David' is still standing tall. I'll have to cut back many of my others because of heat stress. I also admire your Frans Hals --- looks as if it's not been bothered by the heat. Franeli, I love the combo of Casa Blanca lilies with --- is that Verbena bonariensis in front? And stack316 --- yours are those interesting doubles I've seen online and in catalogues. Sadly, my lilies are done for the year. Persimmons --- your "volunteer" nasturtiums are adorable --- cherry brightness! Maybe I'll plant a patch of those around the telephone pole in front of our driveway next season. Everyone's gardens are so inspirational. Keep posting, please!

My overwintered plants are mostly dead, have one serrano and one habanero mustard that will probably make it; I foolishly followed (probably misinterpreted) advice from another thread and washed the roots clean of all soil with a 'green' dish soap, I'm convinced this was the wrong thing to have done, anyway, I won't do it again.

EARLY was the guiding factor with me in deciding what to grow. This is my 2nd year with baccatums, I'm hooked forever more. :-)

Since the seed swap, I'm having a very hard time trying to decide. Maybe just try them all for a trial basis, then cull/choose next season. Trying to choose based on how I would use them, but there are several in these categories. Gary

Well, I started to make my list earlier this year and started collecting seeds the past few months. I grew too many tomatoes last year and was told no more tomatoes for a year or so, which opens the garden for all the peppers I can get in there. Now I feel like the guy at a Smorgasbord where I put way to much on my plate. Here is my list of seeds that I have for 2013, but I have not decided if I will plant them all.

Not sure how many will grow like they should, but going to give them a big try. Have had good luck some years growing Habaneros, Jalapenos, Thai and Cayenne, etx. but have not tried the super hots yet. Got my fingers crossed for a normal and warm summer up here in the Pac NW.

The Manzanos were sown 12-29-12, and the rest were sown today.

The 2nd tray will be all annums and will get sown in another month or so.

Hey y'all some impressive sounding peppers! austinnhanasmom, I really wanted that Bahamian Goat. Couldn't find seed, dangit. But I think I have enough.

First time trying the superhots from seed but so far, all will be started in 6 pack 72 deep cells, 3 seeds per cell, 6 pack of each. Some I saved, some from friends, some bought. Starting all but annuums Feb 1.

Poblano--no matter how hard I try to grow a mild one, they grow out hot (again, per some folks, or vary from pod to pod).

Will post pics along way. Soaking seeds 30 minutes in dilute H202, then rinses. Then 8 hr. or o/n in salt petre and dilute kelp solution. Probably overkill on the soak but the manzanos have lots of crooks/crannies for lurking pathogens, thus the H202 In moistening process of Promix BX (added perlite and dolomite lime) using some Actinovate which actually doesn't cancel out the mycorr in BX, or in my experience, hasn't. When pot up, dab roots with a little mycorr, anyhow.

Anybody with suggestions: growing lots of sweet peppers and tomatoes as well, please suggest away! If I'm not learning, not growing. Thanks!

In zone 7b and most will go in-ground--well-amended over years--garden April 30. Last frost date 4-15. Hard to tell with spring: I held off, kept hardening, last year when they could have gone in-ground. Only planting some paste tomatoes--lots--in double 5 gallon self-watering buckets. Might pot the manzanos in same SWBucket system, Al's 5-1-1 mix.

Again, any suggestions? Please suggest! Annie

My list isn't quite so exotic as some of the others. I have very limited space, so I had to make some tough decisions.

I may not have a garden this year... but, I do have some things I'd like to grow, if I have any backyard space or potting space.

Habenero Peppers
Jalepeno Peppers
Genovese Basil
Mammoth Sunflower(if enough space is available)
Watermelon(I've forgotten the exact name, but it's a non-herimloom that gets to around 5-10lbs).
If I can get my hands on some other herbs, I will grow them as well(Rosemary, Thyme, etc...)

Unfortunately what was my 'garden' from last year has been taken from me. So I don't have a lot this year I can plant.. a shame, last year was my first time gardening. I'd managed to get lettuce, potatoes, green onions, beans, carrots, cucumber, sweet peppers, and squash. Even from a late, late start(July!). :( These plants mean a great deal to me and it makes me sad that I can't grow all kinds, but I can try with my little potted ones.

I'm cutting back on the peppers some this year. Just going to do bhuts, douglahs, and butch T's.

Got a lot of other stuff I really want to grow and limited amounts of space.

Going to be doing purple apple berries, okinawan sweet potatoes, atlantic giant pumpkins (the 500+ pounders), wolfsbane, belladonna, and a whole small field of glass gem corn.

Well, the annuums are sown. This is my final growlist:

Most of the ones in tray #1 have sprouted now, except the Peach Habaneros, Scotch Bonnets, Purple Bhuts, and Inca Red Drops.

Tray #2 was sown last night.

I'm doing this for the first time. Very exciting, 9 days in, and already almost everything in the first sowing sprouted (20 seeds in 10 cells). Filled another 24 cell box yesterday.

I have no idea what it is really called, but bought them at a grocery store last year and they were bigger, tastier and MUCH HOTTER than the Thai Hots - 'green chili peppers' were all they were labeled as. I figured I would try and grow some out this year, as I really enjoyed these.

How my guys are doing:

Summary spreadsheet via Google.

The number in the "Up & Dead" column are plants that emerged and subsequently died, usually by helmet head disease. Far more simply never came up - those don't have their own column.

Note the overall germination rate! Really good.

Now if I can just get the survival rate up over 50% I'd be even more over stocked with seedlings.

Well I've decided to grow my Holy Grail this year.

THE WHITE MANZANO.

Not light yellow,White.

I had 1 plant that put out pure white pods but I had a mite problem for a while and tried to save the plant by giving it to some one who I thought would save seeds and take care of the plant.
They didn't save seeds from the pods or care for the plant.

I have 1 plant from the white podded pods seeds growing and have several other plants growing from Yellow/White pods seeds I saved.

The pic of the pod are next to a couple very light yellow pods.
The plant from the middle pod put out T shirt whit pods.

So IF the last plant I have from the white Manzano grows true I'll be spending the next seasons re growing seeds to see if the albino is stable.

Any time I saw a White Rocoto or Manzano it was a very light yellow,not pure white.
The pic looks yellower than the pods were in real life.

I'm on a mission from the pepper gods.
I have 18 sprouts from 1 white and 17+ yellow white pods seeds going now.

I'm sick and tired of the super hot crap.
Totally unstable crap sold as a new strain or variety...
Most are 1 trick ponies.

I like my 7 pots but am on a quest for bigger and better things.
Tired of unstable stuff being called new strains or varieties.
$ has taken over these days.
Really sad in my opinion.

Ya I'm into trying to grow every pepper known to man but these unstable peppers aren't on my list.

I will share any of the seeds that I collect from my goofy list. Some I am growing (attempting anyway) merely for the trading and sharing...

I can vow to bag blossoms, and keep my plants correctly labeled, but only time will tell...
