gfleatham, I've been enjoying the info on various hydrangeas you've been adding and appreciate the accompanying photos. Any chance you'd be willing to add your zone & general location to your profile so that they post by your name automatically? TIA Houzz doesn't make it easy to figure out how, so here are directions: Go to Your Houzz in the upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone. You add info on your state or the nearest large city since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures. Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing.

UPDATE: Plant is showing new growth much greener than the flimsy washed out yellow green foliage that was also spotted with brown spots. New growth breaking out from a bunch of stem intersections. I still have no idea what it is and why all of a sudden it is looking like someone gave it a vitamin B12 shot as the growth looks lush compared to what was before when it was in heavy decline. I know 6 years later and I'm buzzing in. Well, this just happened to my tomatoes and I'm no gardening pro! But, I saw some tiny poop that had me wondering who it belonged too. I thought maybe my tomatoes were getting too much sun and thats why its was turning colors but I did some googling. I found out, I had a Catapillar living and eating my plant! I sat down and stared at my tomato plant wondering if I would find this mystery Catapillar and then all the sudden right in front of my face there he was, about the size of my finger, but blended in so perfectly to look like a leaf. After posting this discovery on fb. all my gardening pros warned me that he would kill my plant totally and move on to the others. As well as lay larve. Yuck! Well, upon looking at your photos I think I found his cousin hanging out in your photo!! The close up was the one in my garden. So you can see it better. It's a tomato horn... Yours may be in a different family. But it's a catipiller!

If you're going to pull some plants anyway, you could try slicing the "trunk" of the stem vertically. If there is some hard brown material in there you could check out the pictures at: http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/ Perhaps it might confirm your diagnosis. If it's LB, I believe the best thing is to pull anything that shows disease to try to stop it from spreading to other healthy plants. Linda
