Rose and burritos method help

Hello everybody
I have done this method on some cuttings about two weeks ago and now it is time to plant cuttings. What type of soil is suitable for them? Can I use sand? How should I take care of them after planting? Is a small greenhouse good? What about the minimum temperature abd light?
I would appreciate any helps and answers.

Where are you located? Without that info there is no way to say if a greenhouse would work or not.

I haven't yet planted them.
The weather is cold with low humidity.

Hi Jackie, you'll be missed! As I state each time I demo the method, if you already have a method (or methods) which work, God bless you! Don't fix it, as it ain't broke! This is never meant to replace a successful method. It's simply to allow you another tool in your chest to increase potential successes at other times of the year or possibly with other types which refuse your other "advances". I'm glad you've discovered an easy method for you in your conditions. Not every method works precisely the same in every location, climate nor with every rose. Most can be fine tuned with enough experimentation. What you're doing is pretty much what I did (sans cats) in the Santa Clarita Valley with about the same success rate. In Encino, nope. 100% black/gray fuzzy goop, no matter what I did to reduce the moisture. Fortunately, this is working nearly perfectly again this year. Out of 320+ cuttings, I've lost fewer than 20, almost all of which came from other climates and appeared to succumb to canker. Those from mine, and other local gardens are pushing right along. Second batch of burrito method roses started today

Just an update: So far the first batch of Icebergs are doing well. Not seeing roots in the bottoms of the cups yet, but they seem to be green and plump with nice growth starting. The second batch is also doing well. And happy in their cups of gritty cacti soil. And the third batch, each started a week after the one before, of Mr Lincolns is doing the best so far! I had gotten busy and forgot that I had set the "burrito" down and forgot to put it in the cool garage for the first week. BUT, this is the first batch that came out of the burrito wrappers with little white roots pocking out. Looks successful....too bad I really did not want that many Mr Lincolns.

Grandmothers-rose started a long thread on it. I have linked it below. There is a lot of information on it there. Basically you wrap cuttings in damp not dripping newspaper, after dipping ends in rooting hormone, then put in plastic bags sealed for 2 weeks. Store in a cool dark place. The gentleman who first brought this to the attention of the person I heard it from has filled in the origin information. A commercial nurseryman in Australia wraps his Fortuniana root stocks to callus them. He removes them from the wraps after they've callused and BEFORE they form roots. He bundles them together at the callus stage to take them to the fields where they are pushed in to the ground. The callus tissue is fairly hard and durable. If there are roots they are easily damaged. The calluses form roots in the fields where they continue developing until budded. If you've gotten callus by the two week period, I would plant them. The longer you leave them in the dark, the more stored nutrients they will use without being able to replace them. By planting them deeply in the pots or cups so the majority of the stems are buried in damp, dark, cool soil with the remainder in the light, the green tissue of the stems will begin creating chlorophyll to feed the cutting. As long as conditions are within tolerance, they should keep right on developing and forming roots in the soil. That's my suggestion and what I've found works best here so far. If you're in a very cold climate there is no way they will survive in a small unheated greenhouse over the winter. You could try and bring them inside under lights but you will have to be very vigilant about keep them evenly moist. Actually if you can set the greenhouse up inside that may keep them both warm and moist enough to root.

I'm not sure plain sand would be good. You need to keep them evenly moist and sand drains too much and too quickly. I usually use seed starter soil. It's very light weight and holds moisture well. Start them in 16 ounce clear plastic drinking cups with a hole punched in the bottom for drainage. That way when they root you will be able to see the roots through the cup without having to disturb the plant. It makes it much easier than guessing if they've rooted or not.

My you tube isn't working,( im searching for a winter rose propogation idea in zone6 b)what is the burrito method,wrapping cuttings in newspaper? If so can some one post detailed instructions PLEASE.
