There's Chrysler Imperial the Hybrid Tea bush and Chrysler Imperial the climber. As I remember it, if a HT (or other established "bush" type rose) starts throwing long canes as a mutation, they can often take that strain and establish it as a climbing rose. BUT, the climbing version in many cases is not as floriferous as the bush type. Which explains the difference in the American Rose Society ratings. Chrysler Imperial the bush is rated 7.8 ("a solid to very good rose") while the climbing C.I. is only rated 7.0 ("average"). Personally, I'd stick with a rose that was bred as a climber.....Maryl

Hi I grew crimson cascade in zone 4-5. It did'nt do well for me at all. It never really grew very big, had a few flowers in its first year and thereafter for two years was really infrequent. Also it did have a lot of winter dieback. Finally it just died. The flowers are very pretty but I dont know if it is hardy for our climate. Currently have William baffin - which I just adore. It has grown huge in just 2-3 years and is loaded with lovely pink flowers. Also for me it repeat blooms.

Sherry, I am doing just that, but with some other rose combinations... I do, however, have Red Cascade intermingling with Alister Stella Grey AND a blue AND a white clematis...Overkill? FWIW... you really won't know what's going to happen in your own microclimate until you try it yourself. Now...from a different standpoint. I will say that I don't always like different "reds" together. I don't know if I would like or hate RC and DJ...sometimes different reds together are unappealing to me..put some of the flowers together and see what you think. I'm using some Barbier hybrid wichuranas to provide leaves for my otherwise naked roses: Sombreuil, Parade, Secret Garden Musk Climber, etc. I think it looks cool. Robert

Thanks Connie, It does make sense. Unfortunately as you can see from the pictures they are planted a bit too close together to truly take advantage of long horizontal tied vines, but I'm trying to fan them the best I can. I guess if they won't cascade making them bushy will be the better way to go. Since I'm now finding this rose bush was originally a shrub rose instead of a true climber perhaps it will bloom nicely even if I don't get the true horizontal vines. I think I'll see what happens the rest of the year, and decide in the spring if I should take some of the height off.
