Raised beds under small trees? What to build with?

Hi,

I would like to make two new raised beds between some trees, about 3-4' wide by 10' long.

Austrian Pine .... Sumac .... Northstar Cherry

I am anticipating the trees will grow and possibly require the beds to be removed at some point. Also I expect the sumac to promptly attempt to colonize in the raised beds, so I need some way to keep it whipped back. It's a naughty tree - sending up new tree-lets often. Any suggestions? I read that hardware cloth + landscape fabric in the bottom might help?

And what to use for the sides? I can't decide. I have lots of round rocks (6-8" diameter). Boards would look nice and lend a formal element. Cedar logs might look nice. I don't have any raised beds made of wood, and don't know anything about how durable they would be? What does wood need to be treated with?

I would like to fill the beds with colorful combinations of bulbs, small perennials and tall annuals - low commitment plants that I won't get too attached to. :-)

Cheers,

Michelle
