Double Delight and Julia Child

The second flush of roses is coming on, and it's going to be a cane-breaker. Marmalade Skies is so filled with buds it scares me. Bishop's Castle will probably burn up, but it's loaded too. I'll post photos when they bloom.

Today there was a neat duo of blooms on Double Delight that showed up from across the garden, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Julia is in full bloom. I have been smashing katydid nymphs, which eat holes in the sides of each bud. The instant karma is rose thorns jammed into both hands.

And a shot of the succulents a bit earlier this year.

Ohhh, yes, that is PROLIFIC!!!! AND EVERY TINY CENTIMETER of your garden DAZZLING!!!! Love those succulents and purples/yellows!!!!

Love it! Beautiful healthy roses and a variety of other plants. Just love looking at rose garden pictures. Do feel free to give us more shots in the future. We promise to enjoy them. LOL

I live about 90mi north of Sac and have similar temps. JC does about the same for me as John's. I just planted mine in the ground after having her in a pot for a couple yrs. She loved getting out of that pot! ABOUT FACE is a lovely rose, but grows like a dang climber for me. It's planted in a somewhat shaded area, so that could explain it. But it grows to at least 8ft and I have to tie the canes to a big fat stake. The blooms are pretty, but blow pretty fast. They don't repeat all that great either. I guess that's because the plant is always trying to grow taller and taller...

Rita, I'm not sure I'd like the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch scrapple either. Julia Child's recipe is made with pork sausage, no weird meats. My "traditional" recipe is made with the bits & pieces of meat picked off a roast turkey and the stock from the turkey carcass. Again, no weird meats. I'm a California Greek and a friend told me about this way of using up the leftover Thanksgiving carcass years ago. Never heard of scrapple before, but once I tried it, I really liked it. It's now a family favorite.

Thank you oldrosarian, your Memorial Day is gorgeous! On the pre 1970 selections I was going by what I thought would have been considered good roses during that time period. I currently have the three you mentioned, all good roses for me. I also have Pink Peace which is a great bloomer, I love it! Peace, I really love the blooms, and it was one of my best performers last season, and Bewitched is always lovely, although I will admit I wish it was more prolific. Chrysler Imperial has struggled, but I love it, Mister Lincoln isn't any better, I don't know what would have been a good choice for a red rose during that time period. Angel Face was new for me in 2015, like it so far. When it comes to roses we don't all want the same thing and roses perform differently, depending on where they're grown. I am zone 9 - very hot dry summers. JC never got over 3 feet for me - had her about 6 years. I just moved and have been rose shopping. I went to nursery last year in our record breaking hot spell - over 105 - the only roses blooming in their black containers were Doris Day. All of them were blooming - so thats the yellow rose for me.

Renee, your garden is very Eden-esque, dare I say even heavenly :-)

DDs are so decadent that they almost make you feel guilty just looking at them. It's like you're glad they don't have one of those satisfaction per viewing labels on the side to inform you that you've exceeded your daily recommended dose. Once you've exceeded that you have to go and buy another one for yourself. I don't want to boast or nothing but fortunately I have a lot of will power and only have several ;-)

I love the mellow yellows and those semps are to die for. We have some originals from my late MIL. She's been gone since '84 and they are still thriving.

Renee, your garden and your roses are magical. Your Julia Child is a picture of health and beauty. Even Double Delight, which is a rose I've always disliked, somehow manages to look pretty in your pictures. You have an artist's eye in your choice and placement of plants. Bravo!

Gosh, you guys really know how to write. Your comments are very gratifying. Thank you. I'll take some full garden shots as soon as the plants grow enough to hide the big holes I have dug everywhere for the gophers.

Your garden is beautiful! I love the shot of the succulents...it looks like a picture right out of a gardening book :) Also love Julia Child, one of these days I'll have to give her another shot (I think I just had a weak plant).

Kippy, those obelisk things were purchased. We built our first one, but the lumber added up to almost as much as the 59.99 fully constructed trellis!
