Bill, these are just my thoughts...so please take them or leave them. Say you cross A and B and get 50 seeds. You pamper them and with luck, they bloom in 2 years. First blooms aren't always the best indicator of what the blooms will really look like, so you grow out the bulbs for another year to Year 3. Keep in mind that with 50 seedlings and 50 resulting bulbs, you will get many different appearing blooms. In the extreme case, you may have 50 slightly different looking blooms; no two being the same! Let's hope/say you get 10 that look identical...(they are genetically different, so you can't call them "the same") so that in Year 4 you can enter the blooms in some amaryllis show completions/exhibitions where they are scored and evaluated by experienced growers and breeders; the Keukenhof amaryllis show on opening day is typical and would provide exposure. Hopefully, you could do some networking to determine if the blooms that you think are so outstanding are truly unique or if similar blooms have been developed by anyone else. So... Then if this bulb has bloomed well for you and is unique with the characteristics that are accepted: scapes strong enough to support the blooms (hopefully at least 4/scape), two scapes/ bulb, you have successfully forced them so that holiday blooms could be obtained, etc. then you would pay someone a large sum to propagate the bulb via tissue culture, resulting in thousands of genetically identical clones of the one bulb you started with. Grow them out for another 3 years and you can think of selling, hopefully with the help of a distributor. Somewhere during that time, you name and register the bulb... And we see it in a catalog 8-10 years after you planted that first seed!!! It's not a fast process. I don't think that the profits are huge unless you are growing tens of thousands of bulbs (or more)! Along the way it would be likely that, depending where you live, you could have some loses due to insects (NBF) and disease. This could set you back a bit or more! This is why I make my crosses for my own pleasure!! But, if I see a real winner in my own backyard, I wouldn't hesitate to set the wheels in motion to propagate it for sale. You could too!!! Again, I'm sure I didn't think about everything, but that just the way I see the journey from seed to sale! K

Seeds produce no capsaicinoids (the stuff that make peppers hot). The only reason that they are hot is due to their close proximity to the placenta, they absorb some of the capsaicin. Capsaicin is produced in the placental tissue, usually concentrated where the ribs meet the wall. When people remove the seeds, they also tend to remove this material which leads to the false presumption that the seeds are the cause of the heat. The placental tissue only contains maternal tissue. The same as the pepper walls, etc. The reason people clean out the seeds is that 1) they are bitter 2) they are not fun to chew 3) they are not fun to look at Sweet peppers also tend to be easier to clean that hot peppers, due to the size (sweet tend to be larger) and the danger of handling them. They tend to have more pronounced placental tissue (once again due to fruit size). This tissue is rubbery when consumed and contains no taste benefits. In hot peppers, it is beneficial to keep it as that is where the capsacinoids are produced.

first lets make sure I understand the question correctly. You say you have a pepper from a definite cross of a chiltepin and tabasco. This pepper is different from both the chiltepin and the tabasco. Lets call this pepper CT1 for Chiltepin Tabasco #1. You will take seeds from CT1 and grow them out and we can call them CT2. Your question is will CT2 be exactly like CT1 and the answer is NO. Most probably not. You can take some branches off the plant CT1 and root them. the rooted branches will be identical. If you grow many plants of CT2 and then 3 and 4 etc. eventually you will get to a point where what you have should breed true. This usually happens by CT6. If you select carefully you might wind up with something very close to your CT1 that you like so well. Now the good news. I think CT2 will be different from CT1 but the good news is that you will like CT2 as well or better than CT1. if you grow 4 plants you can expect on average to get one plant similar to C and one similar to T and 2 showing cross characteristics. But it really is much much much more complex then this. One more important idea you need to know. You will probably have a better chance of finding a CT3 that is similar to CT1 then finding a CT2 similar. the CT2 are more sure to be different. Too many people give up when CT2 does not look like CT1. You must go to CT3 with the correct CT2 made seeds. The bad news is that most CT2 will not produce the best CT3 that you are looking for. Personally I would ignore it all and just plant the seeds and make more the following year. They all will be nice and hot and tasty. Of course your winter is shorter than mine and you should at least try to keep the original plant alive and root some branches. I have an 8 month winter and have not succeeded in keeping them alive all winter. But it might work OK for you or for your friend in Texas.

Seysonn, the many home gardeners making crosses are not doing it for the money. they are doing it to get the F2 seeds to sow the next year and make selections and continue making selections at each generation until the one selection they think best is stable. Keith is not a full time breeder but all those he bred, and is still doing so if you look at his website, are also available at several websites and he gets no money back. His variety Purple Haze F1 is not that available other than plants and any money received from those sales go for autism research since his son is autistic. And often they , the amateurs,come up with something great as did Sam with his initial cross between German Red Strawberry and D.r Wyche which is now called Sweet Ozark Orange, which took him about 5 years to stabilize. And I could give you other examples aswell. I send seeds to several places for trial, so do others, and such new varieties often end up being sold here and there, and the persons who did the original crosses receive no money at all, just the pleasureof doing what they do and finding something successful. it's quite different for commercial breeders such as Fred Hempel withhis Bumble Bees and Mark MC Caslin and Bill Jeffers and more,b/c sometimes, at least for the first two I just mentioned,there is always a contract involved. if you look at Johnny's, TGS, Jung's and many more you'll see Fred's varieties being sold, for instance.
