My crop this year and some questions

Hi I am a long time reader first time poster.

I live in Victoria Australia

This year I am growing the following peppers:

4 x Orange Habanero

2 x Yellow hungarian hot wax

2 x Serrano

1 x mild jalapeno

1 x thai long hot (red)

1 x thai long hot (yellow)

3 x Red Savina

and about another 6 plants of unknown origin that my grandfather (italian) has been growing for many years (very hot) which he usually makes chilli pepper from.

Usually I use most of my chillis fresh and dry the rest, this year because I have so many extra plants I plan on making hot sauce and canning some.

I prepared the soil in my vege patch with compost and manure prior to planting, and have been ferting them 2 times per week alternating between fish emulsion and seasol (liquid seaweed) i also periodically add dynamic lifter pellets.

Most plants are doing quite well, but I have noticed that half of my plants although quite small are flowering, will they continue to grow and get taller?

My habaneros are showing slightly deformed leaf growth what might be causing this? I can get a pic if needed.

Oh, I envy you. I just cut all my frost bitten plants from garden and are trying to keep the potted ones alive inside.

I have not done any blossom picking and I still got a good crop and the plants grew well. Some people say that you should not let the small plants to try to produce fruits and they will grow bigger faster and produce more later. You could experiment by picking the blossoms from half of the plants and see if it makes a difference.

Last summer some of my habanero type plants had deformed leafs. This seems to be typical for C. chinenses. I reduced fertilizing and after that new leaves looked more normal.

Cool, windy conditions and/or excess fert has caused this with some of my seedlings in the past. They seem to always outgrow it when weather settles down and I quit being so crazy with the fertilizer.

Welcome back to the wonderful world of gardening! :) (I'm in a happy mood because all of my crocus are blooming!) Without going into too much detail, rotating is used mainly for two reasons: to help prevent the build-up of disease and to help avoid depletion of the soil of certain substances. Any basic gardening (vegetable) book will usually go into detail. But essentailly it boils down to moving plants so that you don't grow the same types of plant in a spot year after year. I started listing what shouldn't go where, but really it is easier if you look in a book. Or online. But corn next to lettuce isn't a problem, whereas peppers where your tomatoes were last year might be. Cheers!

Drought this year - will it affect next years crop?

I think the effect remains to be seen depending on how stressed individual trees were. There is a wide variability in our yard with some trees losing entire limbs (I watered all my fruiting trees/bushes). This was from a UC Davis site: "Drought irrigation strategies must be judged not only on how production is affected in the drought year, but also on how production is affected in the following seasons. In fact, the risk of catastrophic yield reductions in nut crops is low in a given drought year, but substantial the following season unless effective drought strategies are used. This is true even if the drought lasts only one year. This principle was illustrated in a recent test in almonds using several irrigation regimes in a simulated drought year. In each regime, a total of 16 acre-inches/acre of water was applied over a season, but with different timings. The results, where most of the water was applied early in the season, marketable yield was relatively unaffected by the drought, but production the following season was reduced by about 75 percent even though the trees were returned to full irrigation the following year. On the other hand, where some water was applied just after the harvest, the following season's yield suffered only about a 30 percent reduction."

Hi liv2learn - So you are looking for fall and winter gardening info, right? If so then your best bet for specific info on that issue is likely the Soil, Compost and Mulch forum as they have discussions currently running on mulch contamination from plant diseases as well as how to prepare/repair and amend your soil. It can be confusing I know to pick the right forum sometimes but the focus on this forum is how to grow from seed in containers using a special technique called Winter Sowing. ;) (See the front page.) But there is also a related discussion going on fall gardening - how and what and when to plant - over on the Vegetable Gardening forum you'll want to check out. And there are some discussions there too on crop rotation. Only certain viral diseases can cause you a problem with contamination - the normal composting/decomposing process takes care of most anything else so I really don't think you have anything to worry about. I'd just apply fresh mulch and compost on top of the old and move on. Hope this helps. Thank you Socks- we all need some commiseration when we discover that we have been robbed. It helps that others understand (and often share) the frustration. It's Us against Them and they outnumber us! An ancient war i know. Round-up used within a couple miles, under the right conditions can cause deformed leaves

habanero orange are difficult to grow and quite often dont
get that tall.They taste pretty horrible too.When they start
from seed,you should remove laterals as they grow to premote
height.Take the odd leaf off from the bottom as the tree grows
to premote growth and try to develop a Y shaped tree with no
leaves below the V part.Feed with soluble Thrive flower and
fruit when flowers appear.Prune so light can enter the middle
of tree.Allow space for the friuts to grow.Feed lightly every
time once the tree is a good size.They tend to get bushy,so
thin the leaves a bit.A fert high in nitrogen will premote
leaf growth which is good early on but you want more potassium when flowering,hence the flower and fruit soluble
fert.Pick a lot at first(no power) but then leave mature fruits on the tree a long time.They will then be very hot!
especially if you eat raw straight away.They will become
hotter when the temp drops eg into autumn or early winter.
Drought stress will make them more angry too.The above applies to all chillies.Get The Y shape,so the tree can branch out.Gradually remove leaves up the stem,so its bare.
Do you plan to eat raw or cook? Ricotto red is good for
cooking in food.The above works for me anyway.Good luck.cheers
