Nancy's Goat's milk soap

Nancy,

You brought some soap to the Spring Swap but I hadn't tried them until recently as they got misplaced due to the kitchen construction. Well last week my kitchen was pretty much finished up and I was putting everything away and came across your soaps.

I put one in the bathroom and told my husband to try it and he was reluctant, but he did try it and loved it! We all love it! I'm using the Rose scented right now. They are lovely and in this dry climate they are not drying.

Do you sell them? Is your recipe a secret?

Glad you liked them! Yes, I'm starting to sell them. I wanted to see if people liked them before committing to several batches for sale. So far, everyone really likes the rose scented soap. I'm trying to come up with a scent that men would like ;)

I do not keep bucks, but have a friend who has 3 Oberhasli bucks I can choose from when I do breed. I tend to milk my goats for usually more than a year or two. They are pretty heavy milkers and it is possible to milk them for years. I have one doe,who is retired now,that I milked continuously for 4 years and she milked a gallon a day for all of that time. I don't like to breed every year because there are only so many people who want baby goats in our area, and there are already quite a few breeders around. If I get does out of a breeding, I keep them. The boys, I have neutered and usually train them as pack goats and sell them for $100.00 or so. But, trying to find homes for the boys is sometimes a challenge. Some of my friends put their wethers(neutered males) in their freezer for food, but I haven't done that yet. We raised meat goats for years and I prefer to eat them. I get too attached to my dairy goats to eat them.:-) But, if you have a doe that is a pretty good milker, you can always try to milk her through her breeding season. The volume of milk will fluctuate some during their cycle, but usually comes right back up when their cycle is over. A goat that is a "light" milker will come into heat and the volume will drop and won't pick back up. Basically, she is just drying herself off. But, heavy milkers can perk right along. Works for me!

hpw, I don't have any numbers, but I don't doubt that some US citizens become ill from food-borne illnesses contracted from consuming 'raw foods' every year; but, I suspect they're fairly low in number, and since the vast majority of people in this country get ALL of their food from the grocery store or restaurants and the minimal numbers of folks doing the raw thing, the small numbers of illnesses are probably sporadic and random, not triggering an epidemiologic investigation by FDA and CDC. When we have a situation like the recent Salmonella outbreak which FDA 'finally' traced back to Mexican-origin peppers(Duh! They're largely a third-world country with poor to nonexistant sewage/water treatment facilities in much of the nation, and it's likely that the farm workers aren't provided toilet facilities, so they are probably 'relieving themselves' right there in the fields), in which a large quantity of contaminated foodstuffs from a single source are widely distributed across the nation, then we get large numbers of persons affected. I would have no qualms whatsoever about consuming raw milk from my own personal cow - because she would have been tested negativefor brucellosis/TB, and *I* would be in charge of every aspect of cleanliness and sanitation from udder prep and monitoring for evidence of mastitis to refrigeration of the 'finished product'. But, I wouldn't necessarily trust anyone else purveying raw milk to take the same care that I would. There is no doubt that milk is a healthy food, but the claims that raw milk is so vastly superior to pasteurized milk are without rational scientific basis, and it's ludicrous to make claims that pasteurization completely destroys milk's nutritional content, and in fact renders it into a toxic substance.

Well, to be honest, M&P soaps are not the same as real, natural handmade soap. You don't know what is in it or if the glycerin has been removed, and chemicals added for hardening, sudsing, etc. I teach soap making and have receips and directions for making it from scratch, yourself, using a blender. It's not difficult but it does take weeks to set. To say a soap is made with goat's milk, you may have to actually make the soap with goat's milk. However, you can always say it's so and so soap with goat's milk added. As for how much to use, how big is the block of M&P soap that you are using for this?

Ooooh Cheese - my favorite topic! I have made lots of different cheeses over the years, but concentrate mostly during the summer time on soft cheeses, such as chevre (a french style cream cheese), feta, crottins, and camemberts. When I first got into cheesemaking, I stuck with soft cheeses, figuring it would be too much trouble to make the hard textured cheeses, but, I changed my mind after a couple of years. I milk my goats "through", meaning I don't breed them every year because they are big milkers (l gallon or more a day), and I milk them right through their breeding season and have milk year round. I milked one of my Oberhasli's continuously for 4 years. Milking them through is a nice contiunous supply of milk for me especially in the winter. That is when I make hard texture cheeses, such as parmesan and romano. It takes 4 gallons of milk to make one wheel of the italian cheeses. It also takes 4-6 months for them to age properly. So, I make these cheeses in the winter and age them in my basement, and then they are available in the summer. It is very satisfying to have shelves of your own cheese aging in the basement or wherever. The best source of cheesemaking information is The Cheesemaker's Manual by Margaret P. Morris. She is from Canada, and I also buy all of my cheesemaking cultures from her as well. She is a VERY nice person, Very knowledgeable, and a great resource for reasonably priced cheesemaking supplies. She has a website at: glengarrycheesemaking.on.ca. I own just about every cheesemaking manual published and hers is definitely the best. I teach cheesemaking workshops occasionally, and I tell any new cheesemakers to pick one cheese you want to make and perfect that technique before you move on to another one. It is easy to jump in and want to make all kinds of cheeses at once, but it can get complicated. I tell new people that cheesemaking isn't really hard, it is somewhat time consuming in that you have to pay attention to temperatures and cultures and try to keep ahead of mold growth if you are aging cheeses. I have also been selling my cheeses at the local farmer's market in the summer for the past 8 years. It has been a nice source of revenue for me as it helps pay the grain bill. I have also educated the northern portion of our city on the finer aspects of good goat cheese. Most people turn up their noses and tell me some horrible story about goat cheese they had that was awful. I usually tell them that most imported goat cheeses are fairly strong in taste and smell - but - fresh cheese is absolutely wonderful. I always have samples out for people to try and they love it (most of them anyway). I started out making cheese using goat's milk and vinegar to curdle the milk. It is an easy recipe, but after a while I couldn't stand the flavor. Making chevre is SOOOOOo easy and it is sooooo good and versatile that I was sold.

Well, thanks again for the soap. I really like the rose scented too. If you come to the swap, I'd like to buy a few bars:) You will love them JC.
I am a licensed esthetician (skin/facials/waxing) and just got a bunch of books from the library on making skin products to use and sell but the soap book looked a little intimidating with the chemicals, lye, safety goggles, etc. If I did it, I think I'd buy the melt and pour to add to and make molds from!

Sandalwood might work for men. My friend loves bergamot scents and has one cologne he loves that I can't stand - smells like musty old socks to me. It makes it hard to find one that men would like that women would appreciate too :-)

I'd love to buy some too; the rose scent sounds perfect for my friends mom and my grandmother

Having finished my lunch, I am sitting here with chapped hands, drinking licorice-flavored herb tea and reading about men using hand soap.

The tea is mostly anise hyssop and fennel leaf and does not include licorice root but I sometimes buy the dry root at the oriental stores for tea. I've read that nearly all the licorice root that is imported into this country is brought in by the tobacco companies. It is then used to flavor mostly pipe and chewing tobacco.

Nancy, I'll suggest that it is generally men who appreciate that flavor and use those products.

Just my 2 cents.

If I were able to come to the swap, I'd be interested in the soap. I haven't for some time, but I used to make soap as a hobby. I could probably deal with the lye process of making soap--my degree in chemistry might be good for something other than bragging that I've studied rocket science--but so far I've just done the glycerin melt and pour soaps.

Perhaps a "green" scent for men? Something that smells a little of pine and moss?

Especially for gardeners. Most of us love the smell of loam.

My spouse uses scented soaps in the shower all the time and his favorite scent by far is peppermint. He says it helps wake him up.

I could also ask him about licorice scent. He chews on anise hyssop leaves all the time, but also snatches peppermint leaves to chew on.

Don't know if you really want to pay attention to this post since he's no where near being a typical guy.

As nonrepresentative specimens, it's interesting that Cnetter's spouse and I enjoy leaves snatched in passing. Participation on an herb tea thread in the herb forum a few months ago ran something like 7 to 1 in favor of the male gender. I asked a rhetorical why and the guys promptly clammed up.

As far as snatching things tho', I'm also very inclined to snatch brassica leaves and various weeds. Don't think I'd especially like to smell like 'em, however.

Mints are fine, I seem to prefer spearmint but we now have about 10 different choices in the yard. But for tea, I generally avoid the true mints. Broad sections of the yard are of little use to me, anymore.

Chamomile is really fine but the flavor seems like apple - maybe an "unusual" kind of apple. And yes, for 20 years or so, I was a tobacco abuser. Cigarettes were always the handiest but I wasn't choosy. At various times, pipes and chewing tobacco also made there way into my hands (and mouth :o(. Besides a decent tobacco, the flavor I was most interested in for the pipe was apple and I usually had a slice in the pouch. Licorice was the choice for a nasty tobacco mouthful of something to spit.

Never went much for the menthol nor wintergreen and such. That was my brother's orientation but, then again, he didn't spit - swallowed instead . . . oh, lord! . . . I think he's finally off the dope. Nothing like cancer surgery to wake a person up a little.

In a century or 2, I'm hoping to essentially BE loam. Right now, rolling around under this searing Summer sun has kept the moss off me.

My husband likes citrus smelling soaps. Maybe a lemon/orange with a hint of thyme would be nice.

Hi again everyone,

Thanks for the hints on scents for men. My hubby so far has liked the chocolate-scented bars I made, but I like the mint and "green" scented ones too. I think I'll try a batch of pine or oakmoss.

Yes, these are the lye-processed soaps. I personally don't like melt and pour because the bars just don't last very long. A few uses and they're gone. They also don't have the dense lather of the traditional lye soaps. They ARE easier to make than the lye soaps though!

I'm going to do up a bunch and start listing them for sale on my website.

Charlene - I'm really glad to hear you like them! It's great to know they pass the test of someone in the business :)
