For Pagan--Fairy standard--the way The Fairy should be grown

I hear a lot of folks fussing about the tip rooting and thorns on The Fairy. The only way I have ever grown The Fairy is as a standard. In talking with Pagan at RU's open house, I really think the best way to grow this rose must be as a standard. It stays off the ground and there isnt much need to reach in to the bush so the thorns can be avoided.

I got mine from Wayside 3 years ago. I have never winter protected it and it had no damage from this spring's late freeze (which probably will be the ultimate cold-test for this rose). I am zone 7a.

luvs - Here's a couple pics from our 1st FM this year...my old quilts wouldn't even staying hanging down on the tables...and my cards were blowing away out of the boxes so I put them away! Yikes! Here's DH wondering what the heck we're doing...but we learned & it improved! Never can count on Ia. weather. Last summer we did a trail couple times & decided we'd give it a go...and I retired also. So we had fun. But you can see some of the fun stuff we make tog. & my DH does alot on his own, too. We enjoy. Log bdhs, Mission bdhs, folkart, I made the rd ones from the porch columns I salvaged at a farm (they were newer & split in 2 lengthwise)...so I got to make lots of those...sure you've seen...and also shutter bdhses, my DH helped me (or maybe vice-versa, barn doors I have fun with...anyway, a great time! Our's is $60 for season or $75 if you get a "shady spot." Of course, we haven't worked our way there yet. Pics not great...but you get the jest of it...Jeanne S. Mine got sold because it was huge, but it bloomed a lot and was lovely. The fragrance was one of my favorites. Culture: 3 "rows" back from a big, E/SE window and right next to the T8s but too tall to go under them except for a few leaves. It was one of the few plants that did well for me in S/H and probably would have gone nuts in just about anything. It got very crowded in the pot, and I didn't repot it during the 3 years it was here. Temps high 50s to mid-80s and even into the high 90s outside during that hot, hot summer. Humidity mid-20s to mid-60s - higher outside in the summer. Often, it was underwatered, meaning there was no water in the bottom of the S/H pot for several days at a time. Hope this helps - Whitecat8

Hello Maria, we should be, IMHO, VERY aware, that since the year 2000 approximately, many new DIPloid hybrids have been created, the inescapable consequence of which is, that many of them will disappear rather soon and MIGHT already have gone extinct respectively. This might be the case with "Jaguar" which is regrettable - well, provided it IS true that this hybrid can/could produce 6-8 florets per scape. Everybody who is in possession of modern DIPloid hybrids might become the "conservator" of all those individual hybrids that they deem "precious". I am the proud conservator of "Melusine" (yes the "real" one, which is presumably TRIploid, currently I have 4 bloomable bulbs) and "Striped Panther" (DIPloid, strongly fragrant, currently 4 bloomable bulbs and 4 smaller bulbs) and I wonder whether, for an example "Santa Fe" is still alive somewhere...

oh thats just beautiful.Mine is a bush,but has nothing laying on the ground,,close,tho.I keep bottom cut so its not on the ground.Easier to cut the grass around it,if its not on the ground.Thanks for sharing your beautiful standard.

Rhonda - Oh my goodness!!! I think I would faint if I had anything that lovely growing in my yard. Nothing even comes close!!

That is Macie who we lovingly call Macie-Moo. She is a Shih Tzu but she does look a lot like a Tibetan Terrier. Tibetians get up to 25 pounds. Moo weighs in at 10. She was up to almost 12 after spending a week at my moms while I was out of town. Mom couldn't resist that little begging face....and Macie came back looking like a stuffed sausage!! She doesnt mind posing for pictures. Here she is with her 'summer cut' smiling for the camera from her favorite place in the yard....the pond's edge.

By the way...couldn't you over-winter a Fairy standard (in a pot) in your garage? Might be worth a try!

Macie is a doll baby. Ronda, that is the sweetest baby. I love it!

I like your The Fairy as a tree. Yes, The Fairy tip roots and believe it or not (No, it's not a climber, which I also have) but the bush form is competing with crepuscule.

Your tree version is far more beautiful. I dug mine out with holediggers three times but it returns every year. Finally, I gave up.

I bought it as a tree rose. I never do anything, not even prune it. It just gets better each year!! I would like another so if any of you see it for sale somewhere...LET ME KNOW!!

I love the closeup of The Fairy! And LOVE your dog!
My Fairy was pale and wimpy and got sp'd! I replaced it with Flower Girl, but its getting too big for its spot! I should be more patient.....
