Most of the Detroit area is now zone 6, last two winters excluded. If you give the canes some protection they might make through and then you would be able to expect it to climb. Otherwise it's going to grow like a big shrub instead of climbing. I just got America this spring too and I'll be just as interested as you in how it fairs this winter.
