My Earth Song Hedge :)

OMG I love my Earth Songs! They were planted last year and they're a sea of bright pink right now. Incredibly heat-tolerant too... We hit record temps of 95/96 here in Chicago and the Earth Songs just kept blooming despite being in full sun all day long. Not one bloom has crisped :D Dr Griffith Buck was a GENIUS! I am so proud...my neighbors stop and stare all the time!

Great pix of a great rose. You picked perhaps the perfect rose for a hedge. I have two Earth Song growing in the same place for twenty years now. They just get bigger and better every year. Blooms continuously if fertilized every month with RoseTone. It is usually still blooming in late October here in CT.

In very severe winters, like 20 below zero, there is topkill, but it is very crown hardy so I just prune back to about 6" and it takes off like gangbusters. As disease-free as a rose can be. And the perfect name too!!!

That sounds about right for the fragrance. I have my plant of it because of an interesting connection. A number of years ago, a friend who owned a specialty rose nursery had a customer come see him. The man asked if he could get a rose propagated then told him the story of the rose. The man was a musician and had played at Iowa State, meeting Dr. Buck. They discovered they shared not only a love of music, but also of roses. Dr. Buck took the man back to his greenhouses and showed him his roses. To commemorate the meeting, Dr. Buck gave him a plant of Earth Song. The man had moved it many times over the years and said now the plant was in decline and wanted to repropagate it. My friend called me to ask if I could help, and I told him to have the man bring cuttings, which I would then forward to Sequoia Nursery for propagation. He did, as did I. Burling at Sequoia rooted three plants from the cuttings. I kept one and brought two back to the nursery. Unfortunately, the man never returned and my friend didn't get his name or number. I know every plant of any variety is all from the same original seedling. However, this one is special. Not only is it from that original seedling, but this one was also shared by its creator with a fellow rose and music lover out of friendship. To me, that just makes it even more special. Kim

That is okay Kate. You probably thought that because of the absurdly cold weather we had this last year. It felt much cooler than Zone 7 when it started hovering just above zero degrees:) I have ordered from RU before but I look forward to giving them more business. Pat is always so great. Right now I am getting a replacement Crown Princess Margareta, Tradescant, Earth Song, probably Quietness and I think that is all. Don't hold me to that though, anything could happen once you start a rose order. Kate

How big can Earth Song get?

Hi Sara-Ann I agree with the prevailing opinions - even in dry colder Nebraska, Earth song gets big for me. It's in the back of a large bed at 5' by 4' on a good year, bushy and continually blooming. It holds the foundation spot underneath a trellis arch just behind it, and it fills the space in front of the trellis pretty well with just 2 feet or so visual space to the top of the trellis. It's a keeper for sure. I also heartily endorse both Roses Unlimited and Burlington as sources for roses. Also, with RU you can always drop Pat an email to check about availability of roses you want and she's pretty prompt at getting back to you with up-to-date information. Same with Burling, who also doesn't maintain web lists of whether a particular rose is in stock at any given time. Cynthia

I get growth like that. Multiple factors are involved. High temperatures is one. In addition, quick repeaters like Julia Child and Sweet Fragrance regularly show growth like that. It occurs in July and August, particularly if the rainfall has been over abundant. Small leaves and small flowers come from such shoots. So, it's: high temps, July thru August, quick, vigorous repeaters, and over abundant rainfall. Now, it still looks suspicious for RRV. If it is, only time will tell. Wait it out and see. Thanks Paul- I gave it RoseTone when it started leafing out and will give it another dose once this flush is over :) Also will give it some Alaskan fishy stuff!

Love your Earth Song hedge. As heavily as Earth Song can bloom, do passerbys ever stop and ask you if those are pink Knock Outs? I have one strong-blooming older rose with flowers almost exactly the color of the red Knock Out--people are always asking me if that is "one of those Knock Outs"? Drives me nuts. I would think your Earth Songs might provoke some similar remarks.

I love the color and agree that this seems to be a perfect rose for a hedge. I wish I had some place I could try this. I hope you keep posting as your roses mature and fill out even more. It's going to be gorgeous!

Thanks dublinbay. No, nobody has asked me yet. They just compliment the roses, that's it. If they asked me what they were, I would actually push Dr Buck roses as I am a huge fan and I think it would be great for Chicagoans to grow his roses! My husband did compliment a neighbor's Knock Out bushes though- he said "Those are really nice too." Made me roll my eyes ;-)

Well, lovemysheltie, you've "enabled" me into ordering this rose even though I have no place to put it. I love its appearance but the other consideration is that it seems to do well in the heat which I have plenty of. I'm now going to have to consider which rose to remove so I can put this one in its place!
