To shade cloth or not to shade cloth?

I haven't ever had a really good gardening season since I moved to northeast Colorado. It seems that the weather and ground stay too cool for much to get started in the spring, and then, WHAMMO!!, it's over 90 degrees and nothing will grow because it is too hot. I'm also wondering if plants are actually too close to the sun and get too many UV rays. My question is: does anyone use shade cloth to help out with the hot temps and UV rays? Does it actually help? I know my chickens love the extra shade from the cloth, but I don't know about veggies. I have some that is 50-70% shade for the chicks and thought I'd use the 30% shade for the veggies. Anyone with experience using shade cloth?
