Holy Crapola...Columbus Earth Kind Garden has grown like mad!

Granted, I ventured there a few times last year, but after my picture rampage in 2010, I stopped by this week to check up the Columbus Park of Roses...not a whole lot to see as of right now other than the Rugosas JUST starting to bloom and Cantabriginesis(sp?) blooming.

HOWEVER, the Earth Kind garden has grown to an insane degree from what I remember it. In the garden, it gets very little treatment and the roses are enormous compared to what they were a few years ago. I believe this Earth Kind garden was started and planted in 2008?...I could be off a year or two. It used to be a daffodil garden, but it's rose infested now. I'm really excited to see how Frontenac blooms now that it's 3 times it's size...a VERY underrated rose that puts on a spectacular show...puts a knockout to shame.

That last photo- oh my gosh. Those roses are spectacular without any blooms at all. You must return when they are blooming. Please.

Once when my kids were little my son came running outside and said Mommy there is a HUGH rat in your bedroom, now it being daylight I am thinking he just THINKS he sees something and it is the 'lighting' or something but NOOOO he INSISTED there is something in my bedroom. MY fiancee is about to leave so I mozey my keyster in the house to my bedroom and GOOD GRIEF IT'S A POSSUM IN MY ROOM! And it is on my dresser at the moment. I do a quick 180 and run out to chase SO down and tell him he better be getting his hinney in here to get this thing OUT of my bedroom. He gets the broom and had removed the screen from the bedroom window HOPING it will jump out, but nope, it turns ever so slowly and WALKS back across the dresser, onto the windowsill, onto the headboard of my bed and disappears! OMG WHERE DID THE CRITTER GO???? Albeit it was a baby BUT it WAS a possum none the less, turns out there is a hole in the floor under our bed the little critter crawled through to come in. A mama possum had set-up a home underneath the mobile home and had actually gotten into the walls and maybe the ceiling too, I heard noises there ALL the time. I kept telling him SOMETHING BIG was in the walls, ceiling, FLOOR, under the trailer and HE always said it was stray cats I KNEW with the size of the sound I kept hearing it wasn't a cat! At any rate when the baby possum made it's appearance he finally figured out that was the sound (the mama possum) I had been hearing, he patched the hole so no more would come in and when we moved out I am assuming mama possum and more babies lived there long after we did! I am SOOOO glad I am not the only one who had a possum INSIDE their home! I just thought it was CREEPY!!! It was a cute little baby, but NOT IN MY BEDROOM! And it darn near terrified my son, he really thought it was a LARGE rat...poor kid, guess I would have too at 6 years old! He really wasn't far off either huh? :) Fran

My Grandmother died this past May. She was 92. All 4 of my grandparents were avid gardeners. She was the last one. She was very generous in her will. So I went to the local bulb wholesalers and made an order for 7000 bulbs. I went thru the whole catalogue and ordered everything purple and orange(colour choice mine not my Gran's as she was a ''tasteful pastel lady'') and some other stuff too. Fortunately only about 5000 were available. I've been spending the fall planting... thinking of course there's room for them all... I now have cleared more blackberry underbrush away to make new beds!! Everywhere I want to plant in the established garden already has bulbs when my fork comes back up!! And for sure the bulbs in the spring would look so naked coming up by themselves...so out I went and bought shrubs and small trees. I'm gonna try tulips as spring understory for deciduous trees since they are so numerous. However, we just had a fine sprinkling of 20 inches of snow and sub freezing temps. There's about 2000 left to go in. I might just put the field rototiller on the tractor and make a row somewhere just to get the rest in the ground next week when the warm rain is due back. I've planted bulbs even in January with no ill effect, so I'm not worried about the bulbs... just about my sanity!!! I won't do this again, though the 2000 that weren't available of course are on my buylist next year. ...Don

And beyond preparation for the apocalypse (and I'm one of those people who love apocalypse novels like The Road) it's not a bad idea to just figure out what we can produce on our own, for economic reasons, for environmental reasons, for health reasons. My tomatoes taste better. That's cool. My contribution to the overuse of chemicals and monocultures to grow food is lessened when I eat my own organic tomatoes that didn't cost an ounce of gasoline to get to my plate. That's pretty cool too. I'm a bit more self-sufficient, prepared for a crisis, national, global or personal. Also cool. And my body is healthier, if for no other reason, I'm out in the garden doing moderately physical work rather than in front of a television. I might even be healthier eating my tomatoes because they might be healthier grown that way. Lots of scientists think they are. I often wonder why more people don't try a few things in the back yard, especially in our climate, with a long growing season, albeit one where we're out in the dark with a flashlight picking caterpillars. :) (Ok, I admit, I'm reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan right now. It will absolutely reinforce your desire to grow more of your own food, while making you scared of not just cheeze whiz, but whole grain bread from Publix.) Susannah

I bought the Nesco FD-61 at Amazon. It's a lot larger than it looked in the pictures! It arrived in time for me to take it on a test drive last weekend. Saturday I tried a recipe in the book that came with it for cat treats made from canned tiny shrimp and catnip flowers. Only took two hours to dry and seemed to come out pretty good, but the cats didn't care much for the shrimp. I gave each one a shrimp piece once they'd cooled, and most of them pretty much turned up their noses at them. Sunday I tried pouring the stuff onto a small plate to serve to them. This worked better as they were all very interested in the catnip part and ended up eating the shrimp trying to get all the catnip. LOL I'm thinking of trying to modify the recipe to maybe marinate the shrimp in catnip somehow so more of the catnip flavor gets imparted to the shrimp. Sunday I made beef jerky using the seasoning mix that came with the unit and a rump roast. This turned out very good. Even the cats liked it! I made the mistake of putting the jerky into a freezer bag and leaving it on the kitchen counter. Some kitty got hold of the bag overnight and tore it open to get out some jerky. Guess I'll have to keep it in the fridge from now on. Going to make more this coming weekend. Got another roast at Homeland and this time had the butcher slice it up for me. I had some trouble slicing it and getting all the slices a consistent thickness. I've ordered the screens for it which should arrive, hopefully, next week. Then I'm going to try some drying some basil. So far, I really, really like my new toy! Thanks to everyone in this thread for the idea of getting one and all the advice. I had to laugh- that right there is a Before and After set good enough for an informercial!

Renee I can't wait to see the in-bloom pictures. (And didn't they pick a lovely setting? It looks like a wonderful park.)

Wonderful to see your commentaries on roses, Nick! Frontenac is fabulous!Soooo cool to see an Earthkind rose garden, and hurray for Chamblees support of them. Nick, yes, like Renee I'm absolutely looking forward to the flowers emerging!

Wonderful study on the before and after in terms of size and vigor!

I'm also looking forward to the roses you've planted for your Mom as well. Let's keep our fingers your parents will finally listen to you, and that the roses will finally get to bloom instead of being hacked or interfered with! We are looking forward to the blooming, Nick :D

Haha I hope so Serena. It looks as if Mary Magdalene or Abraham Darby will be the first bloomers this year. Paul Neyron would have bloomed first if *cough* somebody wouldn't have damaged the buds. At any rate, the roses are doing much better this year, especially the ones against the garage. I am a bit surprised at how varied they are in bloom period, although I pruned quite a few of them differently. I will post pics of it as they come out. I actually am planting some short and large larkspur, silene pendula, cherry brandy rudbeckia, liatris, plumbago, monarda, and some HF Young, Dr. Ruppel, and Sweet Autumn clematis tomorrow, so more to add and I have to move the artemesia and coreopsis as I VASTLY underestimated the size of the nepeta that I planted next to Evelyn last year...a perfect color combination for Evelyn by the way..

I'm going to try to get some pictures of the Earth Kind Garden in full bloom but it's going to be tough since I'm not in Columbus yet. :( I'm heading back in the middle of May so I can get pictures then, but hard telling what it will be like then...blooming for sure, but I'd like to catch Frontenac at it's peak...Frontenac will probably put on an enormous explosion of color.

Nick, yeah, same here in Kansas how each rose insists on doing their own thing. Sometimes I swear they have their own psychology. People always talk about waving their shovel as threats and the roses "suddenly" shape up. When I had Fragrant Cloud for example, I would always brag about Lincoln and its GORGEOUS COLOR! and FC would try so hard to have these deep red blooms instead of scarlet-orange like it's supposed to have. Lincoln right now is having machismo pride against Folklore. Usually Lincoln always is the first HT to bloom, but right now Folklore beat it and it's doing its male stubborness about wanting its own separate show...Nick, I specifically color coordinated the gorgeous deep florist red of L. to go with the candy-reverse sherbert orange/golden yellow reverse of F. to go together, but just like you say, they keep varying in bloom period. One gets spent, then the other rose starts up....

Nick one thing strange, I found out that I cannot keep large perennials alive once I transplant them, but NEVER EVER! have I had a rose go into transplant shock....I've had pretty old roses like Penny Lane that I've transplanted. You see I have too much energy spent on roses and can't have any time to care for transplanted large perennials save for watering every other day. Nick one of the problems is that I handwater EVERYTHING! and here we are having global warming to the MAX. Baby perennials do fine but not the big ones.

Anyway, your plantings also sound gorgeous Nick! We are looking forward to seeing them in their splendor! I can just imagine the blanket of beautiful purples, lavender, and mauve going....
