Things are starting to burst into bloom around here - what joy! It's been crazy windy out the past couple days but I managed to get a few good pictures. This year has been an absolute nightmare with the Aphids - I've got a few lady bugs around and also seen some solider beetles but even with that and the hosing down I do I can't keep up!! ugh! I finally broke down and sprayed with soap and water ... I take it really personally if they are on any of my once bloomers - then I get a little murderous and squish them with pleasure - lol

Anyway here are a few Abraham Darby's that are blooming right now. I just love the different shades of this rose and ended up taking a ton of pictures!

Ditto, the wind & aphids!!!!! What a mess, must be colder up here on the ridge, not many opened yet but soon, if they don't all blow to Nevada.

@noseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque) yeah I hear you on the watering issue. I think I have that problem with my potted roses too. I've had several that I water abundantly, but they hold so much of the water at the bottom of the barely 15in tall pots they're in (even with adequate drainage), that they don't really grow much after the first year or so. What I didn't realize was that the soil actually decomposes fast. I've noticed the soil level going down over time in my pots. I just thought it was settling, but never thought that it was decomposing! Definitely feel you on the weight of the pots too. I've moved soooo many this year and it's not an easy task! @strawchicago z5 it's funny you mention air pots because I plan to transition all of my roses to them! I've seen such good results from people who use them, particularly @Hoang Ton - Zone 9a (he basically single handedly sold me with his youtube channel. Also, sorry to drag you into this, dude haha). I like the Air Pots because they solve all the water table issues I have with my potted roses. I can also alter them to make them taller if needed. I have a 4 year old own root firefighter rose (full sun - regular watering/fertilizer) that basically did nothing until I put it in one of these (19in wide plastic pot to 12in wide 5 gal air pot) and it took off like a champion after just a couple weeks. The only difference was the air pot. It blew my mind! @Dave5bWY Nice that you were able to move and have a new Abe going. I'm glad it's going well! I'm hoping moving Abe to air pot will help with the issues I've had with it, since it allows for better air flow around the root zone. Another cool thing about them is if it becomes root bound, I don't have to move the plant at all. I can just remove the side cover and trim off any roots that I need to before putting it back on. I'm really excited about trying these pots out with these roses! Thanks ya'll for your responses, they were very helpful! I'll try to keep ya'll updated on old Abe as things progress :-)

Fringed Stipules on Abraham Darby?

I know that fringed stipules can be a trait indicating Rosa multiflora somewhere in a rose's lineage, but I don't know much more than that, nor am I familiar, offhand, with the intricacies of Abe's heritage. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" :-), so hopefully one of our experts will weigh in. Maybe a sport/mutation that is allowing the gene/set of genes connected to fringing on stipules to be expressed?

I have own-root Abraham Darby in a pot (got as tiny rooting only 3 inch. tall this mid-April). Right now June 12 it has 8 buds in 6 hours of sun (already pinched off 4 buds last month). Very vigorous in 2 months !! Abraham Darby takes shade well. A Florida rose-grower stated that it bloomed well in 2 hours of hot sun, which translates to 3 to 4 hrs. of cold-zone sun.

When Heirloom sent out a notice it would be the last chance for own root Abe Darby, I immediately hit the buy button, now I am so glad. This morning I raced through the chores, finished watering the pot ghetto, and almost went in without smelling my first Abraham Darby bloom. Abe's piteous little bull nosed bud struggled to open from months of relentless rain. Even stunted , that frilly petal packed , sublimely tea perfumed rose is why I bought Abe again and would say it is without a doubt my favorite rose in the world.

Just gorgeous Aprille even if you do have aphids. I can't tell in these pics. I love all the different stages of AD. I would love to get this one. Maybe one day. Judy

I had Abe for years. It was a love hate relationship and hate won out. It was really difficult to say goodbye--it took years. Your photos remind me of the love part.

I feel your pain on the aphids, I even went and bought some ladybugs in desperation and I can't keep them. Someone else must be enjoying their help, I'm about to give up and resort to soap too.

Beautiful rose.Its been windy here for over 2 months,and its not aphids so bad,its worms and caterpillars eating up buds and leaves.They ate every bud I had on Fragrant Cloud and Garden Party,moonstone and Love and Peace..

Some beautiful examples of Abe, thanks Beth.
My rose shoots are between two and four inches long right now, (others in the area are far more advanced) So I doubt if I will see a bloom until JUne. Sometimes luck enough to get the odd one in May. :shrug

THIS is my favorite of them all, and the only rose I have two of. I love AD with a passion, and you captured the colors and form perfectly. Can I come over now and smell it, because mine are a loooong way from blooming.

bodica - today seems a bit calmer but they are expecting more winds later in the week. you know the funny thing is we keep running into Ladybugs everywhere. We were at the beach this weekend and there were Ladybugs all over the sand! My little one's kept picking them up and putting them on the plants around so they would not get swept away - these were nice big fat ladybugs too! Then my daughter said that they have ladybugs in their play ground and that the kids were playing with them, she was trying to get them to leave the ladybugs alone "cos they are good for our plants" - lol - she's a good gardener that one - and only 5. I also spot a lot of them on our walks at the park - but they don't really seem to make it out here in the numbers that we find else where - bummer!

Thanks Carla & Judy. Judy I have a love hate relationship with this rose like Kathy. It's been quite small for me for the past 3 years, but the blooms are so stunning that I keep it, I am hoping it will do better this year.

Kathy - I know exactly what you mean. I feel the same way about him. We'll see how he does this year. I might try and get him own root and see if it does better.

Leslie - he's a big nodder, the blooms are so huge that his skinny neck can't hold up :o) - I just hate aphids! We got two bags of Ladybugs, some stayed and some left - oh well, that's how it goes!

Jean - ouch, that sounds horrible! Don't you just take it so personally when things start attacking your roses? I do get so worked up over that and curse and cuss at the critters! lol DH thinks I've lost my mind. He's most probably correct!

April, you should give it a chance. I think he takes a while to settle. The blooms are just so beautiful that I forgive him most transgressions. My main problem is that he does not repeat as well and that basically for the past 3 years has grown maybe 1 inch with no new shoots. We are hoping for some progress this year.

Pauline - thank you. I can't imagine having to wait that long for blooms. But your garden is such a dream that I think it's well worth the wait.

Well I'm giving my AD one more chance
I have had him for 6 years and has not showed me anything
impressive.
Anyway I decided to move him last fall, so I'm going to see how well he performes in his new space or else he will be a goner.
No time to waste with roses that do not want to thrive, when there are others that I am dying to try.
