Digging & Bringing Inside

I have many hot pepper plants that i would like to bring inside.

Could i just dig them up with the rootball and just set them in the pots?

or should i wash the soil off and replant?

Also i only have ground soil, not potting mix, do you think that would be alright?

PS: i read something about being able to make pepper plants go dormant?

i think i would be a lot easier to start from seed again next year.

I don't believe in that dormant thing. I think you can get them to grow slowly though. I dug up a bunch because of my poor year. I used the soil they were in and added some Pro Mix to fill the pot. No other preparation. Get as much of the root ball as you can with a large spade.

Jennifer, "I was talking about the sun annuals Petunias-the ones that are two different colors like red inside white outside, purple and white etc." Petunias like full sun, so giving them enough light inside would be the trick. You might want to consider using overdriven fluorescent fixtures for more light. Thanks to the information provided by the talented electronics hobbyist, Zink, I overdrive the $8 Home Depot commercial shoplights and I have raised zinnias from seed to bloom to seed under them. Here in Maine, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a potential problem during our long winters with very short days, and the bright light from the overdriven fluorescent fixtures is said to be a prevention for that. I know that my wife likes to "camp out" near the plant stand to read the morning paper. Here is a link to the circuit diagrams for the overdriving modification. There is a continuation message thread over in the Growing Under Lights forum that tells a lot of information about Overdriving Fluorescent Lights. The original message thread (that hit a 100-message limit and was archived and then lost) is still available here. Incidentally, petunias can be grown from cuttings, so you might just bring in cuttings for the winter. That would save the mess of digging up the parent plants and bringing in all the pests associated with them. You might want to experiment with starting your petunia cuttings before cold weather sets in, to get the technique down. MM

Why don't you plant them in containers to start with? I've got several in containers from 2 gallons to 5 gallons and they're all doing well. Last year I took a habanero indoors that had been growing all summer in a 4 gallon container. It did better indoors over the winter than it did outdoors all last summer ... just didn't make any new fruit except for some itsy bitsy things. It flowered like crazy though, and got really dark green. When I took it back out this Spring, it went into shock, got sunburnt, and pouted for a whole month. Now it's back to producing peppers and lots of new foliage. I have a Fish pepper I started indoors last November in a two gallon pot. It's outdoors doing great. I'll transplant it to a larger pot when the weather cools down maybe in August or September, prune it back, and take it indoors again in November. Most of my other peppers I started this Spring are in 4 or 5 gallon containers, and I plan on taking the cream of the crop indoors this winter. Bill

My brother-in-law asked me 5 years ago if he could bring a couple habanero pepper plants inside over the winter. I told him I doubted it would work, and even if it did it wouldn't be worth it. He didn't listen to me, the biologist and supposed garden expert. His plans are were 4 years old when he got lazy last fall and they were killed by an early frost. They had produce unbelievably well every summer. The stems became woody like some kind of small shrub. Every fall he'd bring them in and stick them by a window. A lot of the leaves would fall off, and they would get sickly looking. They seem to adjust after a month or two, and they perk up nicely- even flowering sporadically all winter long. He made no attempt to pollinate them, so they never set fruit. When he took them out in late spring, they would go berzerk and yield huge crops way way earlier than you would expect. It was pretty cool. I'm going to try it with a serrano this fall.

Somewhere I saw pics where the plant was severely root and branch pruned and then repotted into a small pot for the winter and grown as a house plant. It took a month or so for little sprouts to appear from the branches and by spring time the plant was ready to transplant back outside with a head start over seedlings.

I wanted to grow a pepper plant out bigger than i was, i think that would be cool to pick peppers from a "tree". Im going to start digging soon, probably at the end of September.

hey benjoe...i don't know how to post a link, but i do know if you do a search in GW: overwintering peppers + willard3

overwintering peppers.....and it will have 48 responses. read thru it and see how fieldmeister has pruned, clipped and repotted his plants into small pots. i assure you this will work even if you have doubts, i wouldn't blame you. pepper plants are extremely resiliant little beast. some would say its too much trouble, but you have two major gains in my opinion 1) your plants are already growing and have some "wisdom" from being a year or more old and will probably produce more and 2) which is way important to me is that if you have a pepper you really like, then you save the actual plant and know you are getting the same product, whereas if you replant seeds, you may or may not get the same results. i have had different plants from the same seed pack....so hard to know what is "pure", so i say if you like it, then save it. goods luck to each and every one of you on overwintering and by all means---HAPPY AUTUMNAL EQUINOX
