Bringing plants inside for winter

Seeing as i have a daughter off to school and have a spare bedroom ,i was considering bringing some of my container plants in for the winter.I dont expect them to flourish, just survive until next spring.I was wondering what steps i should take as far as lighting, watering, pruning and just general care to help them make it thru the winter. Its a well lit room with south and western facing windows ,although i know i will probably need supplemental lighting too. Also i am concerned about bugs and what i should do to eliminate what bugs i can before i bring them inside.Anyone have any experience doing this before?..Also,when would be the best time to pull them in?.....anytime before freezing or should i bring them in sooner just to be on the safe side?,,,,,thanks.......don
