A study of Ebb Tide--lotsa photos

Not in full bloom, not by far. It is the 3rd year for this standard. Beautiful, and DH loves the scent. I have tried to capture all the buds for you, too. I had to manipulate the color a bit as I didn't want you to think this is a pink rose. It is truly purple. The color darkens as they age, to very deep purple. My camera can't seem to do purple well. Now, tell me you don't want one.

Your pictures are really good. I just can't get the color right with my pictures. It is such a pretty color.

I like how each flush lasts a long time because one flower opens in each cluster at a time.

Masha, I just saw the heading of your post saying "long" and my heart started beating excitedly. I quickly grabbed a warm cup of coffee (its freezing cold and foggy here in Melbourne)and decided to settle down to enjoy the show. It was as breathtaking as ever. I absolutely love the combination of Sharifa and Ebb and am planning to do it myself. Your WS2K is so beautiful, I wish mine would grow like that. Do you prune it hard every winter? I have pruned mine the last two years, but I wonder if I should leave it as it is this year? Its hardly grown more than a foot and a half. Your Cecile Brunner is magnificent and I love Roseraie de L'Hay is beautiful and I was especially excited to see Christopher Marlowe since I have ordered it too this year. I am not fond of cream roses, but loved Gruss! All the others look wonderful too. You have a lovely garden and thanks for posting the pictures. Sanju

Aimee, what is the Red climbing rose that is in the picture just above where you typed "Royal Sunset"? Is that Red Eden? I hope mine looks that nice eventually if so. I always love this gardens because you always buy roses and have them in the ground, but then you can go to these locations and see them in full swing...or at least most of the time. It gets your hopes up for the same roses you have at home. I love the Enfant de France green budeye. I also like the red/white climbing combo. I've always enjoyed Red/White combinations, but rarely every see the colors together...must just be me. It's nice to see the 2 colors amongst each other.

That hype is specifically because Applause contains genes not indigenous to rosa. They initially marketed it in Japan where the aesthetic appreciates manipulation of Nature. Think bonsai trees; melons and fruit grown in lucite boxes to alter their shape to cubes, etc. That aesthetic also values the gift and the honor it is meant to bestow based upon the cost of the gift. You and I may be honored and pleased by the gift of a vase of flowers from the giver's garden. That aesthetic is more likely to feel more honored knowing each stem of the rose cost the giver $35 (Applause's initial sale price in Asia). Not that the bloom is actually "blue", but it does represent many years of genetic manipulation to alter the color of the initial rose from red to the mauve color it expresses. In that light, it is presented as "the blue rose", which is how it is accepted by that aesthetic. I agree the photos of Blue Bayou does appear rather "blue" in the pastel range. Some images of Rhapsody in Blue appear quite "blue" in the darker range. For the whole organism, its health, ease of growth and ability to flower in all types of weather here, Blue for You still wins, hands down in my book. I need to get hold of Blue Bayou. It's a Nikon Coolpix, pretty out of date by now, 6+ years old, I think, but trust me, it's not the camera, it's ALL about the lighting. Just get the light right and you will be astonished. Pick a flower and walk around and look at it lit from different angles. Take it into dappled shade and move it around and get the light hitting just the center of the flower, then the top, then the sides. Study Labrea's outstanding pictures and see what the lighting is like--where the light is coming from, what part of the flower is getting hit by the light. He's so good at it. Then sit and look at your arbor and see how the light is hitting it at different times of the day. And a tripod helps a lot. And then of course post the outstanding results of your study here so we can enjoy them. :^)

Hi kathy...great photos. Not NORMALLY a lover of purple roses but you just might get me to change my mind. :-) Do you have yours in the ground or a pot? I just bought a GORGEOUS Gene Boerner standard and don't know if I want to put it in a pot or the ground. I tried 2 in pots last year and they both died unfortunately. I have a KO standard in the ground that is doing great. Also, how do you prune yours? Thanks for any help! April

April, it is a standard in the ground. I wasn't looking for a standard, but that is all I could find 3 years ago. I pruned it the same as all standards, just left the main branches and cut them back quite a bit to a nice framework. I am thinking it is a good rose for a standard.

That's gorgeous Kathy, yes, I want one if it could look this color:) How hot do you get in the summer and does the color change then? Is this a spring and fall color or all the time?

Les, we are regularly in the 90's and 100's being right near Sac. I seem to think it is less purple in the heat. Remember, I only had it 2 seasons, the roots weren't really established. Nothing here, almost nothing, does well in that heat. This year will give me more of an idea how it does in summer.

Hey Kathy, Your Ebb is so, so purty!!! I love purples. I bought me one this year as a bare root so I hope it does good this year. I can't wait for it to bloom. You took gorgeous pictures of it I don't see how anyone can say they wouldn't want one either. Judy

Kathy, so happy you posted these pics. I have two on order from Amity but they are not ready to be shipped yet; still growing and may be about another month. Can't wait; love purple roses. Hope mine are as lovely as yours. You truly have the 'rose touch'.

WOW Kathy, these pictures are just fantastic.I have one bloom on mine again but it does have several clusters of buds on it.Mine is even a darker purple then yours,so far.I have mine in a big pot and where I have it at,it will get afternoon shadeI want a nother one,Wish I could find one as a standard.That fragrance is just great.I went out about 6 times today to stick my nose in it.I love the smell.I am just plagued with worms eating up leaves and buds on all of mine this year..Thank you for sharing this beautiful rose.

Happy to see this rose again as I have just planted mine. I always imagined that the blooms would be small, but they look like my "Big Purple" there. Surely that is a photographic illusion. heehee! probably a great macro on your camera. So what size are the blooms?? Anyway gorgeous pics of it. Thanks Kathy.

Kathy, I think Ebb Tide has more pink tones in spring then gets that dusty purple when it heats up. Right now mine is hard to capture the color right in a photo. But here is a picture of my ET standard.

Wow--just gorgeous!! Now I'm sure I have a weird Ebb Tide. Mine is so gangly and the canes barely have any foliage, though it doesn't look sick. I have tons of buds, though. I'm waiting for them to bloom and then I'm going to wack her back and give her one more chance.

I just love the fragrance of this rose!
