DR pics for Irun5k...and anyone else!!

Brian, here are the pics I mentioned. The first 3 are my biggest/oldest A. obesums planted in Feb '08, the fourth is May '09 and all are around 8-9 inches tall. I have another four youngsters planted this summer as well as 3 A. arabicums from the same time...they are Black Pearls which should go on to develop back skins...hopefully! I'm pleased with them as they certainly are a challenge to grow here.

Veilchen, Jim, I don't know why I didn't think of that, I've had to "sweat" them out before. Thanks Jim, My BC's are doing great. I don't understand why they give you so much trouble. I wish we were neighbors so I could stop by and see your soil and growing conditions. In 2001 I bought my first BC locally from a "high end" garden center that was selling grafted plants from Baily's nursery. It is a great specimen, I still have it. I bought 2 more in 2006 from David Austin they are just starting to really take off this year. Last year I bought another from DA, which is doing fine, but has some catching up to do. I see you're in z7, so winter hardiness can't be part of the problem. I think I remember from awhile back that you were getting soil tests and not finding any problems other than you felt your soil was crap. Have you improved it at all? Thanks It's always good to hear from you. Here's a pic of BC from last fall of a bloom on one of its three 7' absolutely plumb vertical canes. Hi Mary, My DB's are from DA as well. I've been a happy customer of theirs for at least 8 years. I originally ordered only one but when it arrived with the rest of my order the stem of the rootstock was split from the bottom to within an inch of the top of the graft. I let Shellie know immediately and I had a replacement within 7 business days. The one with the split still looked alive so I potted it up to see if it will survive, so far, no activity on either but I will try to sweat them out his week. That should work. For the 'farmhouse look' I would go with crochet curtains, Broderie Anglaise, or a very airy Battenberg lace, rather than Chantilly lace or Schiffli lace, in the kitchen/dining room area. Something with more substance and crispness. Lacey lace, will look frou-frou and floppy. I can't see a shade AND a curtain on the door being easy to use. Crochet curtain: Cutwork lace shade for door. This could work on its own without any extra curtain on the door: This has some substance, but is too Victorian for your space I think, that is unless you are going "farmhouse Victorian" then it would work. Google for more styles like this. You may be able to find a fancy shade and matching valance for your window and then just put a matching shade on the door: Here is a link that might be useful: Fancy Lace Shade

gardenwebber, you're welcome. I hope the other dining room pops up. I'd love to see it. I haven't seen anyone else with this combination. We might, sooner or later, add blinds to the side, but so far, we don't feel the need to. I can just drop the side panels for more privacy. The blind is hung on the underside of the window trim. On all our other windows, where they stretch the width of the window, they're attached to the inside of the window (side)trim. Hopefully this picture will help. mitch, thank you! I love these drapes soooo much more than MY original vision. Les (from this forum) helped lead me to these and I couldn't be happier :) Here's a close up on the drapery material and the tieback.

Oh I wish we could hire some help! But none available here, I'd have to book weeks, if not months, in advance. It's tough having to do it all ourselves but in the end I think it's best money wise - I doubt we would get any of the expense back when selling. The work we're doing I view pretty much as just making the house saleable. Right now we're still doing 'boring' stuff - putting up drywall & mud, sanding, cutting holes for electrical outlets, etc. Hopefully we'll get some of the cabinets installed later today. I actually *hope* to have them all installed....I'm probably dreaming, lol. The flooring has been an issue, we keep going back and forth on it. We were just going to put in new tile, but now I'm thinking maybe we should lay down laminate wood. See the whitesh gray tile? That's in just the LR. The other tile is in the kitchen, the entry, the DR (on the right side of the picture), and in the Sun Room (which is on the other side of the DR). What do you all think? Any suggestions? I was thinking if we put the laminate wood in the kitchen and the entry way it would tie together better (better than a 3rd color/style of tile?!). Plus carpet over the gray tile in the LR? How does that sound? Here's a couple more pictures for reference - . The DR - open to kitchen, LR and the sun room is there to the right. Sun room is viewable from the LR, but not open to it. So the DR and LR form the long side of an L - the sun room would be the short end of the L. . This is the LR - you can barely see the start of the entry way on the right. This is a view of the sun room looking from the DR, but an old picture. The floors are driving me crazy!

Hello to you too Bill, I hope you are well these days. I seem to be having more luck with the adeniums than with my 'late' plumerias even though these need similar conditions. Maybe I'm just getting better at caring for such fickle plants!! Oh well, it was nice while they lasted! We just don't have your long growing season here really and I seem to be attracted to such plants. Very odd!

The weather here is not good at the moment, it's gone from snowy and cold to just wet and foggy, it's horrid. Apart from that all is fine, so here's wishing everyone all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Hi Gill, thanks for the pics, they appear to be doing well! I can imagine how interested other gardeners must be when they visit you, since it sounds like these are very uncommon in the UK.

The nice thing about adeniums are that even if they don't bloom, they are neat plants to look at (in my opinion.)

Hello again Brian and thanks for your kind comments everyone, I find them very encouraging.
Some folks ask if I'm growing bonsai trees, not realising this is their natural growth pattern. Others simply think I've lost the plot in growing such tropical plants here...my hubby included! Do I care?...bet you all know the answer to that one!!!
The pics were taken back in August and they have put on more growth since then, they're still growing now and don't look as if they're going to go dormant. They just get a light watering, maybe once a week.
It's now the winter solstice for us in the northern hemisphere so here's to a good growing season just around the corner in 2012 for us all.
