I wanted to tell everyone hey and sorry i have not been on in a while been staying very busy. So I will be showing everyone my progress and what not as well as my new project.

I have missed talking to everyone and i am gonna try to post more and keep up with everyone.

Well today I worked on my plant stand out in front of my trailer in anticipation for spring. I know it is about to be Jan 1st but shhhhh i had fun.

And yes pressure washing is next weekend lol.

And here are all my seedlings

And here is my cutting

I hope that everyone's winter blues are not to bad, i am keeping mine at bay with projects and will continue to do so.

I also wanted to wish everyone a late Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Congrats on your plant stand. It is very nice. I've been asking my husband to put one together for me, but he hasn't gotten around to it yet. Hopefully before spring. I like the tiered look and it gives all the plumies the advantage of having sunlight.
I planted seeds last winter and have some to start this year as well. I've had a rate of about 50% attrition and don't like throwing my babies away. Plus this winter has taken a few even though they are in my garage with a grow light. How are you growing yours? They look happy.

I have a them in a fish tank that i have converted to more of a terrarium. The aquarium bulbs died and i just replaced them with grow lights. My Plumerias are doing pretty well, i am not getting a lot of growth from my desert roses but as long as they stay healthy i will just stick them outside in spring and hope for the best. I really do love the fish tank it is great for seed starting. I will be ordering some more seeds soon but i am running out of room. I am sure i will figure something out though. If you need any help with getting set up let me know, I have learned a lot of tricks with this fabulous group of ppl on these forums .

The first step is taking a good, in depth, look at the soil and these simple soil tests may be of some help. 1) Soil test for organic material. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. For example, a good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drains’ too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer your soil will smell, to a point. Too much organic matter can be bad as well. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy. You should also know something about the soil pH and major nutrient levels and that may require a soil test by a commercial laboratory. Animal manures can be washed out of soils that have too little organic matter, although cover crops can help stabilize them. Soil should never be left exposed to the ravages of the sun, rain, and wind but always covered with something growing, just as Ma Nature tries to do by gro9wing what we call "weeds". kimmq is kimmsr

There are as many different types of organic gardeners as there are vegetarians. Each one has his/her own biases and abilities to explain them. I can explain mine as follows. If you look at the ingredients of organic fertilizers you will see they use a combination of grains (like soybean meal, corn meal, alfalfa meal, corn gluten meal), animal byproducts (like feather meal, poultry litter, fish meal, cattle dung, human dung, blood meal, bone meal), and potassium sulfate (???? I mean ?????). If you go to the local feed store and get a bag of corn meal, alfalfa pellets, or soybean meal and apply any of those at a rate of 15-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet, after 3 weeks you will see your grass become darker green, more dense, and faster growing. Anyone who says this does not work has not tried it. When you get into animal byproducts the results will jump all around. Blood meal is considered "hot" and should not be used unless diluted with lots of other materials. It can provide fast green up, but it can also burn the plants if it is too strong. Feather meal, on the other hand, takes months to decompose in the soil. It is good for long term soil improvement, but you won't see the grass green up in any reasonable time frame. How do these things work? They work because they contain protein (9% nitrogen), carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes which feed the microbes living in the soil. There are over 100,000 species of microbes which live in soil. Your particular soil probably has 35,000 of those species. They form what has been dubbed 'the soil food web,' which is an intermingled food chain so complicated it can only be called a web. Those microbes process the food dropped at the surface of the soil, bring it into the soil, and in about 3 weeks produce plant food in an organic and mineral form which is available to plants. This plant food is captured in the soil by microbes, so it does not wash through like chemical fertilizers can. In addition to feeding the plants, soil microbes protect plant roots both biologically and chemically, keep the soil moist longer, push soil particles apart to provide room for air and water, decompose dead root materials, and generally provide a hospitable environment for plants to thrive. This went on for billions of years before man invented chemical fertilizers, so it works. By regulating the feeding of grains and animal byproducts to the lawn, you can control the appearance of the plants and also control the odors associated with historical organic approaches (chiefly steer manure). So here's my annual plan for organic fertilizer on a lawn. I call it the Federal Holiday Plan. First application of, say, alfalfa pellets, goes on Memorial Day. Follow that with apps on 4th of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. If you live in the south where the grass grows all year long, then start your year on Washington's Birthday. The application rate is 15-20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. If you accidentally double that amount, no problem. The microbes will eventually get around to decomposing it all. You cannot burn the grass with grains. Triple it? No problem. Quadruple it? Now you're smothering the lawn with kindness. 80 pounds per 1,000 is too much. Now getting back to your lawn. If you are still bringing up low spots, only do the soil or sand based topdressing in the low spots. If you use it everywhere you will continue to have low spots. I have some holes to fill myself. I use generic clay kitty litter with no chemical additives. It is looser than I like until the roots build up in it. Then it locks in. Does that help or just add to the confusion and information overload?

Vgkg - Red clover as a cover crop…good idea and it’s pretty too and helps out the bees. I’ve used cover crops before, but not in awhile. In the past, I’ve tried a 3 seed combo from Fedco that had oats, hairy vetch and field peas. I’ve also thought about trying a tilage radish. I have 5 long raised beds, maybe I might experiment with diff cover crops in some beds. ~~~~~~ Dan - Thanks for confirming that the nitrogen gets applied in the spring if you are going to use it. I wonder if you recommend an amendment for adding nitrogen, or will the cover crop do the trick? The 6.2pH - I think that’s why I didn’t bother adding the Lime, but I thought I’d try a little this fall. Every season we usually mulch with grass clippings and leaves we saved from the previous fall until they run out. And I usually bury kitchen scraps along the edges or empty spaces in my bed over the summer. I didn’t do that this year though, so I need to make up for it this fall. Some seasons, I have used cover crops and turned them in, when I grow peas, I usually turn those into the soil. Sometimes I buy Coast of Maine compost and add a thin layer to the top of the beds before planting. So that is probably where I am getting the organic matter. And I don't use fresh manure. ~~~~~~~~ Rodney, I’m wondering if the way I add organic material and turn in cover crops, and chopped leaves, might be using too much of the nitrogen in the beds. I don’t usually add a source of nitrogen with that. What would be an organic amendment for nitrogen I could add to help break down the organic material? I don’t always have enough grass clippings either, having a small lawn. I’ve been using organic alfalfa meal around my roses, twice a season with nice results, so I did add that to the vegetable beds this spring, because I had it in the house and couldn’t make up my mind what else to use. I’ve wondered about growing it as a cover crop and using it to make alfalfa tea. ~~~~~~ I’ve really neglected the vegetable garden this year, having a lot of landscape work to get done, heavy pruning of shrubs, etc., so I’m basically trying to make up for what I didn’t do all season.

Joshua- I'm new to this forum and to plumies. Thanks for your photos, they are so encouraging! I hope to start some seed myself, and seeing your little guys makes me chomp at the bit to get going! :) Nice set up you have there, I love the idea of displaying Plumies on tiers. What a space saver!

Congratulations on the seedlings!!

I also like the setup that you built for the trees and other plants. It reminds me of something that a Plumie person had made a while ago, i think his name was HawaiianBuilt? He made some tables similar to yours and really did a great job. Your trees will love the exposure to the sun and will have a great diplay as well!

I have seen what everyone goes through as far as storage from the pics every one else has posted and i thought it would work well. I have 2 more tier systems i will be building here shortly... I am gonna be buying the 500 seeds here shortly and will need the room lol. Hey Laura was wondering who i have to kill to get that variegated plumeria you have lol... That is one beautiful baby there I hope that I get lucky enough to get a baby like that off my seeds.

Honestly i am happier with my Plumerias than my desert roses , seems like the growth on the desert roses are alot slower or do not respond with the grow lights as well as the Plumeria.
awe well... I have some of the desert roses on a window seal with the hope that growth will pick up some. anyways i hope everyone is having a happy new year.

When you are ready to come lookng for this plant..LOL My address is Barrow Alaska!!! LMAO!!! My friend who gave it to me also lives in Fairbanks!!! : )

Seriously, im really happy that you have had great success with your seeds and im pleased that you have had so many germinate!!!

You will see the Dr seeds start to grow and then you will have more action with them!!! They are slow at first, but you will see a big difference once you get them acclimated to the sun and get them outside this spring.

All of mine are growing well and i cant wait to prune the tops off of the DR's to keep them from getting to tall and skinny.

Great job again on the display bench!!!

Remember im to far away to come and find this Maya!!! : )

I meant to write you earlier, I wanted to tell you that i am mad at you. After seeing your variegated Plumeria I decided to order a rooted cutting and take my chances....
I know the odds are slim but I had to because it was calling my name lol. If i bomb at it, it will be lesson learned but I will keep you posted.

I am trying to be patient with the DR's, but they are so slow.... I am really looking forward to spring so that i can get them outside and start seeing some better results.

Honey the box on bench is just to cover the unsightly tongue of the trailer. I will continue posting pics so everyone can see the progress.

And ty everyone for the complements.

My friend who gave it to me is my side kick, so she tagged along for the trip!!! LOL... I just dont what her or Me to be on the "missing Poster" LMAO... so, now that you ordered your Vargated Plumeria...we can breath a little easier!!! Just kidding...

I cant wait to see them on your benchs come spring time. Just remember to acclimate them to the sun before you put them all out in the direct sunshine!!! This will prevent problems with burn etc.

Fairbanks...I miss jogging in snow flurries in late August.

Very nice work. I like how you did the stringers. Have you considered using outdoor quality eyes/hooks for wires or bungie chords to hold the pots in place in case of strong winds. Maybe its not needed but I would hate to see a domino effect of plumeria tumbling down.
