Why is Rise'n'Shine a Hall of Fame mini?

{{gwi:1211126}} (thumbnail, click to see full photo) is doing its normal thing. We have deadheaded 30 to 40 blooms so far {{gwi:1211128}} just keeps cranking the blooms out. New buds are forming. Doubt it will be bloomless much more than a week when this flush is finished. Too bad the critter isn't more fragrant.

Most likely it is because at the time it was winning all the mini awards at rose shows and was the best of it's kind when it was introduced.
Growers make suggestions each year for the rose they feel should be included in the HOF.

Thanks Meg :) I didn't know what the process was. At the same time, I do understand why RnS is in the mini HOF. We also have Magic Carrousel and Starina. Both of them show us why they are HOF minis. Excuse my silliness.

..I first grew the Golden Showers rose back in the 1980's, and it was a fine yellow climber, upright and continuous flowering, making a good splash of colour... ...I've only read on this forum that the name means something else too... I've no idea what, and no urge to find out, so I'm completely oblivious to it... therefore the rose Golden Showers, is still as it is to me... a fine modern yellow climbing rose... and nothing else... and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it over here, to a new gardener who wants an easy going rose... ..if they give me a queer look, I shall have no idea why...

Hi Stawberryhill, Rise'n Shine isn't terribly fragrant to MY nose. How it will be to yours, I'm sorry, but I don't know. Mr. Moore chose not to breed with Rise'n Shine because it produces pastel to white offspring. Instead, he held back its sister, 1-72-1, which is a short climber and it provides decent yellow colors and brighter, richer colored seedlings than Rise'n Shine. I has some fragrance to my nose, but I can't describe what it's like, other than 'sweet'. Too Cutechild was quite fragrant as a very young seedling. As it's matured, the petal substance has improved along with flower size and petal count, but the scent has diminished to a mild licorice. It has great flowers and is healthy so far, but isn't proving to be all that vigorous yet. Perhaps once I can get it out of its five gallon can and into the ground, it may improve with age. That requires getting rid of thirty-five to forty of the roses I grow to make room for promising seedlings and will take some time. Even then, I can't promise you this seedling will be released. If it isn't strong enough, it shouldn't be in other gardens. We have enough of THOSE already. There is a very logical explanation for why Sunshine smells so differently from person to person. First, individual sniffers. Some can smell some scents where others can't and vice versa. Plus, Robert lives in the low desert around Palm Springs. I live just over the hill top from the LA Basin. When it's 99 degrees here, it's often up to 15, even 20 degrees hotter where Robert lives. Probably the only other well known location whose name you might recognize here in Southern California that's hotter than where Robert lives is Death Valley. There are also variations in humidity between us, too. Temperature, humidity and wind (he's MUCH windier than were I am) all work against there being any detectable fragrance in flowers, or even in the perfume you may put on. Floor planning is fun and challenging. I've been fiddling with software for a while and finally have something we will build. You probably already know that one story of a given sq footage will cost you more than 2 stories of the same sq footage. Major costs to build are foundation and roof. The more you have and the more it departs from a regular square or rectangle, the more costs will increase. Complex footprints require complex roofs that are harder to build and likelier to leak. That said, if you are willing to pay for the complex foundation, note that much of it is devoted to garages. The angled walls can produce wonderful views and could be wasted on a garage. The entry works, the living room is furnishable and the entertainment builtin could be placed on that wall shared with the laundry. Fireplace could go straight back. That would be good Feng Shui. Straight back is fame and belongs to the fire element. The kitchen opening could be wider and the room itself could be smaller. Not sure where the fridge is, but it looks like you have to walk around to get to the sink. Think about where you will be looking when at the sink and stove. The fridge-sink-stove should form a triangle of operation. Sink or fridge should never face the stove. Very bad Feng Shui. The master bath is not done. Not sure why there are stairs going up from a closet. How do you enter the master bedroom? If you are ready to spend money on angled or curved walls, do it in the master bed, master bath, and/or breakfast area. Way too much wall, foundation, and roof complexity is being spent to create 4 garage spaces. Money saved here can go into a really nice kitchen and master bath. That utility room looks like it is really the master bed hall. What software did you use? Is this 16 OC? What about window placement. I may not be time to get an architect yet. You could spend some more time thinking about how you and the occupants want to use space. Then layout accordingly. I devised my own plan because nothing we saw would accommodate us. While we could live in a variety of square footages, we need 10 compartments for our family: Master bed, 2 bedrooms (one for each child), a place go gather, a place to cook, a place to eat, a guest bedroom (used as second living space), a play/rec room, his office, her office. Think about what you need as space. You plan reminds me of one of the first things I drew when I got my home design software. This is a good try. Better to do it digitally and than stand back and say "maybe not" than to build it actually and regret it. Goo luck.

Vaporvac: I bought Shocking Blue, Zeph. Drouhin, Savannah, and Orchid Romance. Really kick myself for NOT getting those huge bags of MG-garden-soil for roses sold for $4 each at Walmart early spring. Walmart is sold out, same with HomeDepot, and Lowe's selling it for $9 per bag !! My roses which were grown in MG-moisture-control potting soil had wimpy roots and didn't survive my winter, but my roses which were grown in heavy & wet soil like MG-Garden-soil for roses developed THICK & SOLID roots that survive winter and flower lots. It's even wetter than my clay !! For the record: every own-root (be it tiny band-size) or gallon-size which I planted right smack into my dense & alkaline clay survive many winters, but the ones which I babied in pots (with potting soil) grew wimpy roots that didn't survive zone 5a winter, no matter how I did it: be it putting potting soil into the ground, or grow in pots 1st, then transfer to the ground (my alkaline clay) later. MG-garden-soil for roses (pink-bag with pic. of roses) was on sale at Walmart for $4 per huge bag. That soil is AWESOME in moisture-retention. I had 3 bags opened in hot sun over 90 F: Hyponex potting soil, Scott's premium bagged soil, and MG-garden-soil-for roses. Hyponex dried up into hard-granules, Scott's-top-soil dried up to hard-black-pellets, but MG-soil-for roses STAYED WET AND FLUFFY. I moved W.S. 2000 (own-root) right before winter, and planted that in a bag of MG-garden-soil for roses (only $4), plus mixed In gypsum. W.S. 2000 was the 1st rose to bloom (despite being moved), and having 20+ buds right now as own-root. Own-roots have short roots, so they can't reach down below for minerals, best use a HIGH-MINERALS & HIGH-NUTRIENTS soil like MG-garden-soil-for roses, which has black-peat (de-composed humus), plus peatmoss & pH-balanced to neutral with lime. Fluffy potting soil like MG-moisture control can't enable solid roots for winter-survival, like heavy clay or heavy soil like MG-garden-soil for roses. For newly bought own-roots I have to use a HUGE amount of soluble-fertilizer NPK 20-20-20 weekly to get blooms. Potting soil has zero-nutrients peatmoss, plus a few chemical granular-fertilizer. Too much hassle to fertilize frequently so I would rather use a rich & fertile soil like MG-garden-soil for roses, which is dense & heavy & black peat mixed with peatmoss, rather than fluffy-peat-moss-potting soil which produced wimpy alfalfa-sprout roots and thin canes. I have never seen any black soil which retain moisture as long as MG-garden-soil for roses, see below pic. In contrast, there's the lousy rating for MG-garden soil with mostly wood-chips. Below soil has perfect rating everywhere: Walmart-site, and 33 perfect reviews at HomeDepot site:

Gee, Dave, I am envious. :-( I had Rise 'n' Shine too, but i just could not control BS on mine so I replaced it with Golden Beryl. G Beryl is not as nice as RnS and it finally croaked over the last winter so now I am in the market for another yellow. The only other 'yellow' I have is Fairhope, but this rose is a cream color to my eyes.

Yes, Rise n' Shine isn't very disease resistant in my garden either. Powdery mildew and blackspot are both problems in the early spring before I get around to my regular spray routine. However it has some outstanding pluses for the garden. Nice rounded bush shape with constant bloom and almost evergreen leaves in my zone make it a wonderful landscaping rose.......But I will keep trialing other yellows. A friend of mine has the Poulsen mini Canyon Cupido and it looked like a real jewel.

Thanks for posting the pictures that so beautifully answer your question.

It was a reminder to me of how good that little rose is. I love yellows and we don't get much true blackspot in my neighborhood. I think my garden may need to Rise 'n' Shine!

I was hoping you wouldn't look Peggy. I know how much trouble you had with yours. I'm so glad blackspot isn't a problem here in Montana.

Maryl, I'll have to watch for CC. Yellow isn't my favorite rose color (I do seem to wear a lot of yellow shirts... Deb buys them) but Deb loves yellows.

Petaloid, blooms open fast on the critter but I do like the sonuvagun. If bs isn't a big problem....

LOL! I just HAD to look, if only to enjoy Rise 'n Shine by proxy......do you have any other decent yellow minis I can look into?

Deb gave me a grocery store mini a few years ago for Valentine Day. We nursed it until we could plant it outside. It has become a great yellow mini but I have no idea as to the identity. Lotta help ain't I? {{gwi:1211129}} is a blooming fool for us. Blooms age/fade fast. Nothing to base this on... for some reason I have a feeling it would be a disease magnet.

I was browsing the Edmund's roses website, and came across a very similar pic of your mystery yellow mini. It looks like Baby Love to me. Says it's pretty disease resistant. I'm thinking of getting this-I'm looking for a disease resistant yellow mini. Just a guess.

Hi DiggerDave,

How tall and how wide is your Rise N' Shine? I repotted mine into a 10 inch pot about a month ago and I see roots coming out of the bottom already! I have an 18 inch square pot in the garage and I was wondering if the Rise N' Shine should be alone in that pot or if I can fit 2 or more minis in there.

msjam, 18 inches tall x 2 feet in diameter so far. It may get a little wider. 24 inches is the tallest it has gotten.

Jen, Those little labels on the thumbnails are tough to see :) I understand.

Won't be able to answer more questions. This is the last day of my membership and I am not renewing. Y'all have fun. It has been a nice 8 years at GW.

I'm excited, I just planted a Rise 'n' Shine (along with 15 other minis) in our new mini bed and I can't wait for it to bloom. Altho I'm more worried about it getting it's roots established before winter. But I'm really happy I got it after seeing your great photos Dave!

Rise'nShine was my first mini seedparent when I switched from BIG roses to hybridzing minis only. After my first batch of seedlings in 1989/90 I did not use it any more.
Just like Ralph Moore told me on one of my visits to him, R'n'S produces too, too many white seedlings.

Check out my rose varieties on HelpMeFind (HMF) and you'll see that my mini Rubies'n'Pearls is one of its seedlings. There is also a sister seedling of R'n'P named 'Purple Gem'

Tenor Peggy, I hope you see this thread again. I, too, live in Blackspot Hell. Two pure yellow minis that have done very well for me are Sweet Diana and Good Day Sunshine. Sweet Diana is buttercup yellow that does not fade. Its main fault is that the form blows quickly. But its beautiful for a day or two and blooms a lot. Good Day Sunshine is from Pete and Kay Taylor, also the hybridizers of Fairhope, the namesake for their home town. So I am guessing it may have some common ancestral genes to that show-winning rose. GDS is, for me, far more blackspot resistant than Fairhope, and it is a light but sunny yellow, definitely not ivory as Fairhope is. Unfortunately I don't know if it is in commerse anymore. You might email the Taylors and ask about it. I don't see it in their catalogs. But its a great rose--workhorse bloomer, one of the first to bloom and last to quit each year.

Hi diggerdave,
Your photo of the yellow rose is not 'Rise'n'Shine'!
It does not have more than 5 to 10 petals as I can see on the photo. Rise'n'Shine has 25 to 35 petals. I have used it a lot in hybridizing years ago.
Just checked HelpMeFind for more photos and it says 25 to 40 petals. Go to HMF and look at all the photos. There are ten of them. Link to 'Rise'n'Shine below.

How long can I keep my first year R&S in a 10 inch pot? I'm new to mini roses. Also does it need a small trellis?

If it's a 2 gall. pot you may keep it in for another year.
As you are in Arizona you may want to put it into a 5 gall. one. I keep mine in 2 gall. pots for 3 to 4 years, but we have a much shorter growing season.
Also, RnS doe not need a trellis.
