Help! Is this stem rot???

Please help, do they look like stem rot to you? The first picture is of the cutting that I'm trying to root, and the second picture is of my mature tree, I defoliated all the leaves due to winter. Please advise me on what to do. Thanks :(

Is this how to upload the pictures straight to garden web? Sorry I'm really new at this.
The cuttings were not watered at all but the one time when I first planted them. First the trunks became wrinkled and now they look like that. 3 of my cuttings are like this. :' As for the matured tree, just one tip has this black thing, is that rot? Please advise!!! thnx so much.

Some time back I noticed one of my older trees would naturally drop under canopy branches in the same way. Somehow the trunk would wall off the branch as if it knows it provides no benefits to the tree and it would start to shrivel from the bottom to the tip. No long term ill effects. I'm not very familiar with "leaf hoppers" so I'll just generalize pest treatment best practices. Do the best you can to spray the canopy from as many angles as possible particularly from below. Most people are comfortable using a Bayer 3 in 1 spray that can connect to the hose. You can thin some branches if you want for shape purposes. I really have a hard time making the too much water connection. It's too mature to be damaged by water except trying to grow it in the middle of a lake. I have seen trees so routinely wet they are covered in lichen and moss. Ugly gnarled and stunted but still alive.

Glad they are helpful. I did not have any coir and I always use potting soil mixed with a lot of perlite for rooting plumeria, so I kept to that. I opened a new bag of potting soil and that had all the moisture needed. I did not add any water at all. I read this tip about usung a newly opened bag of soil somewhere. It works because I can see the droplets of moisture in my baggies. Another tip I read was to keep the ziplock of the baggie sealed and cut one of the perpendicular edges off, and open the baggie to plant by that cut edge. This way the baggie will fall off when you remove the tape, without disturbing any roots.

I would apply fungicide and if worried about what K mentioned above that the saw will not bite well enough to cause a clean cut, I would let it go and let Mother Nature work it out. It looks healthy and it’s not soft at the break point. Try and apply a fungicide or see if you can clean it out ( isopropyl alcohol) on tools and apply some sealant like Dap or waterproof wood glue. Since these types of plants are often propagated with multiple cuttings, it's possible that one strand just was never seated well in the soil or never fully developed good roots. So it never got enough water and the roots on that strand dried up. If the rest of the plant is healthy, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can inspect the other strands at the base of the soil. Also, you may still be able to root that piece that came out. Remove the lower set of leaves and stick the strand in a small glass of water or dampened perlite. They develop roots fairly easily. If the leaves on it are still strong, you could propagate using the "butterfly method". This is what I did with the strands someone gave me recently. You can google it up. But basically, you cut the strand in pieces between each set of two leaves. Then lay them on top of some dampened soil or perlite and sort of push them down a bit to make contact. Wait. They will eventually start to grow. This was started about two months ago from a single strand that I cut up like that.

Hi,
If it was me, I would take a small hack saw and saw off that round thing and see what is under it, hopefully white wood not rot going into your trunk.

.. Your lower trunk appears to be totally dried out. could be heat that did that. Question is what is going on with your roots and above.. if this is a older tree..a problem. .need someone to come in with more experience than me to comment.

Hi Karen,

I was gonna hack that part off but I have no disinfection solution at home at the moment, what kind of disinfectant do you use that can prevent both infection and helps cure the wound? Is physant good for that purpose?
You are right about the trunk being dry, what should I do? The root is strong I just repotted it today and noticed that the roots were alright, no damaged that I could see. However the trunk has many large cracks, is this unusual on a mature tree?
I'm really a novice at this so any input is greatly appreciated. Again thanks so much Karen.

Hi Karen,
I too am a novice in your problem, why I hate to give advise to you..need someone who has more experience than me.. I have never had the big knot on a plumeria.. I don't use disinfectant, cut off to white to white inside..let it totally dry, then put on caulking so no bugs can come in. I don't know what you will have when it is cut off.. may be rot through or to white.. I don't know what advise you have been given on this large area..Know there is someone on HERE THAT CAN GIVE ADVISE!!!!!..

As far as the dried area below..Being its a old tree, it may make it, or that dried area may not put growing into the roots..Depends on how dried up you are in your trunk..
there again, would prefer you get someone more experienced than me. am starting my 4th year to grow plumeria..but still am learning too. I am not going to tell you to cut your tree..Hopefully someone will come in and help you...

SOMEONE COME IN PLEASE and help her..

Nikki, what have you done and what are the results ?

Some people do use caulk to seal a cut. I didn't have any, so I lit a candle and let the melted wax drip on the cut to seal it, worked for me !!
