What browser are you running? Do you know if it has a popup blocker?

If you have Firefox look into getting NoScript. I've found that most popup blockers are worthless, NoScript actually works.

It takes a while to get used to what you allow through the filters and what you don't (certain pages need certain scripts to run or you won't even be able to see the info on the page) but well worth the ad-less, popup-less browsing experience.

I agree. The popups are annoying me also. I realize sites like GardenWeb rely on ads to survive, but aren't the side ads and banner ads enough. The "Flash" ads are ridiculous too.

Thanks for the heads up. I've never found it necessary to use an "add-on" popup blocker with firefox up until NOW. Gonna grab it now.

Yep. Also NoScript.

That's the thing though. I'm not much of a "browser" per se. Sites that are big on ads and popups I tend to just stay away from. So, no need has been needed for just the built-in blocker that firefox provides. GW provides way too much info to steer clear from though -- I've lived with the annoyances since joining.

Simple firefox add-on... I'm in. :)

I'll try the firefox method the next time.

Bruce, you're the man. That firefox plugin worked like a charm. And the browser was noticeably quicker over all. Now I have to get an adblock for my droid chrome browser. Hey when did this become a tech forum?

There is also one for Google Chrome. It's called "Better Pop Up Blocker For Google Chrome". It took them 2 weeks to come up with a name that original! :)

Again.. Great posts and nobody mentioned hot peppers so I will.. LOL. I was also getting a lot of pop ups with the pepper posts (say that fast..)

I just downloaded Firefox and Adblock plus based on the recommendations here, and now have a nice green theme (looking for a Pepper theme though). Looks good so far, I'm brand new to Firefox.. Thanks again for a great forum!!

hahaha, glad to help you all out. I have been using FF for many years now. I have chrome and IE also installed but 99.9% of the time, I use Firefox. I didn't realize so many others out there were suffering so. I thought the forum was naturally pop up free. hahahahaha

I'm using firefox right now with no blocker. It's a lot faster and I haven't gotten any pop-ups. Thanks for the advice.

Firefox has a popup blocker built in. It's just that you can get add-ons to block ads and such that aren't popups, disable scripts on a page by page (or entire site) basis, etc...

I see that I am getting pop-ups, but they open immediately and in the background,

I know I'm late to the party, but ditto on the Firefox and Chrome browsers. Forget the Internet Explorer junk. I laugh at people who still use IE. There's a reason why Microsoft is slowly losing the browser war. People are sick and tire of crazy pop-ups, automatic flash player ads, flashy ad signs like we're in Vegas.

Firefox with Adblock Plus (by Wladimir Palant) with EasyList and EasyPrivacy filters. Everything is so easy to get and install and all free.

Personally, I use Chrome with Adblock Plus beta (by adblockplus.org) with Easylist filter.

I haven't seen a flashy ad or pop-up in years. I don't even know what an ad or pop-up looks like anymore. I go to many forums and have never seen an ad while browsing. I know they are there, and my Adblock Plus is preventing them from showing up. Good Stuff!!! I used to use Firefox a lot. Now I use Chrome because of all the cool Google services and everything is link together to my phone and desktop. But Firefox is great too.

I am not a fan of Microsoft, but to be fair IE 9 and later are actually pretty good. For one thing, they've stopped trying to re-define HTML (the old "embrace, extend, smother" tactic) and seem to have backed off pushing for ActiveX-only functionality.

But I still use Firefox almost exclusively.
