She was a good, good girl (long)

She came here in the fall of 1997. I immediately knew she was going to be a favorite. She performed well with flush after flush, growing taller and wider with each blooming. The hot midsummer sun turned her blooms brown quickly, but there were so many blooms, I didn't care.

In 2007, I noticed crown gall. It never weaked her blooms at all, so I was very reluctant to remove her. 2008 was a wonderful season, too. This winter I noticed the gall moving up the thick canes and felt I had to act. I was still reluctant, as I knew I would have a wonderful summer of blooms.

DH helped me remove her last weekend. I took away some of the soil and put in a new Angel Face in a peat pot (lots of holes in the sides of course), feeling in this way there would be no open wounds to take in the bacteria.

Kathy, what a story! We do get attached to certain roses, don't we? It must have been tough to remove your original Angel Face. I wish the new one is growing and flowering well for you and stays healthy, too!

Thanks for posting the pretty pictures of AF, which document how beautiful this rose was flowering for you!

Sniff, sniff. Pass a tissue please! She was absolutely gorgeous. I can see how you had a hard time removing her. Her predicessor i'm sure will live up to her responsibilies. I think I have an Angel Face just not quite sure. I have one that has spotted edges like your fourth picture. I hope if it is it will flower as good for me as yours did for you. I have never been to this forum before, I usually hang out in the garden areas but I needed to get some relief this morning. This post has helped me just to break down and let all that 'strength' and pain go. I do not wish to take away from the purpose of this thread but I would like to share my story with someone. It has been about a month or a little more since we lost Fred; Fred was a beagle that we adopted from a couple who left him in a crate almost 24/7; he was about 2 years old when he was sent to us.... that was 15 years ago. In that time , I have lost my two shepherd mix girls at 15 and 14 years old.... I have taken in three more pups as they passed my way in need... but Fred was special. Independent, never needing attention and so appreciative when he got it. About 6 months ago , he went blind and my husband thought it was best to help him cross over, I disagreed. I told him that if that were the case, I would know but Fred seemed to be adjusting well and he did...... most times, you could not tell he was blind to watch him. Physically , he was still pretty active, his teeth were getting pretty bad but the vet said none were in need of removal YET.... Long story short, I made the decision that the time had truly come about a month ago because it seemed that everything that moved began to startle him and he seemed to be in constant fear and that was not the purpose of adopting him; it was to give him love, freedom and a carefree life......he had that. That morning, I told him how much I loved him and we spent an hour or more just cuddling...I explained that I was ready to let him go and I knew he was ready ..... I had contacted my vet and we were to be there at 3 pm; at 1 pm, I went to get him and spend just a few more special moments and I found him in his bed; he had taken the journey on his own after receiving my permission to give up..... he now sleeps under a newly planted magnolia (in his honor) with a beautiful marble head stone that has his picture on it....and I spend some very nice quiet times there just as we did together for so many years..... Thank you all for letting me share this here and please know that your thread has helped me get through yet another day without Fred...

Well, BM's mom picked up SD on Friday from school. This morning (Sunday), BM called DH & told him SD has been throwing up since 3am & has the stomach flu. I guess that put BM's plans out & she was going to be home for DH to pick her up. I made a suggestion that DH let SD stay at BM's until she is no longer sick, since BM is not working & SD can't go to school... he didn't want to ask her so he was still going to bring her home. The last time SD came home with stomach flu, everyone in our house had it for a week & this time, I told him that I was not available to stay home & take care of SD as I have to be out of town on Tuesday, so if she needed to be taken care of, he would have to stay home & take care of her... also, that if she gets DGS2 sick, he won't be allowed at daycare & I will have to stay home with him, which messes up my plans. As far as I'm concerned, BM knew of the risk because her other DD15 and her DS1 was sick with it last weekend apparently. She is the mom, she should nurse her DD back to health, right? If SD can't go to school, there's no reason BM can't take care of her until she's well enough to go back to school. After all, she could have warned DH that they've been sick since she knew everyone in her house has had it the last week or so. Anyway, DH arranged for SD to stay with her, at least until tomorrow/Monday. Besides the physical discomfort of being sick, it affects us being able to work (=our income) & being a sole proprietor w/no employees at the time, it would force me to close business or my dad (he has a separate business in the same location) would have to run both of them, by himself because right now it's just the two of us. He doesn't need the added burden of me getting sick and/or possibly getting him sick too. As it is, I'm already taking time off because the daycare is closed on weekends & the other grandparents have not picked up DGS for two months... and it's no longer feasible to bring him to work with me, he gets into everything as 2 year old's do. So, I'm aggravated now with the prospect of dealing with a sick child and/or having the illness brought to us & having it affect our already stressed finances. I'd just like to figure out how to stop being aggravated with everything... and feeling like everything is BM's fault in one way or another. I know that's unreasonable or irrational thinking. But, it's just one thing after another.

I read the article twice and I still don't see where he's " bashing her character ". IMO, it's another one of those sensationalist articles that turns out to be nothing like the headline suggests, and exists only to draw attention and stir up dissention. I feel sorry for the young lady, and I'm sure it was a huge disappointment, but why would she want to keep the medal - as a reminder that she lost ? I'm certainly not a follower of Mike Rowe - too rough around the edges and too full of himself to suit me - but I think we need to stop reading things into these articles that aren't really there.

Oh that is so sad! I hate losing a good rose, I had a Climbing Angel Face that bloomed so wonderfully the first year, but it had blackspot so bad even after spraying that I just had to part with it,.....I miss her. I hope your new one grows just as prolific as your previous one, it was beautiful.

My goodness! She was a very good girl! What a beautifully shaped bush just covered with blooms. Did you spray her to keep it so clean looking?

That must have been very hard to remove such a beautiful lady! I just planted AF and after seeing how awesome yours look, i'm very anxious to mine grow and bloom! I sure hope your replacement of her does as good if not better than the original. Thanks for the gorgeous pictures.

Deb, we are not in black spot country here, so no spraying needed except sometimes for powdery mildew in spring. AF is a clean rose here.

AWWW,What a shame to lose such a beautiful rose.It was so pretty in all your photos.I love Angel Face,but,I don't have good luck with it here.I have planted at least 8 of them,and they do good the first year, then start going downhill no matter what I do for it.I know I will get another one before this year is over,as I dearly love this rose.Hope your new one will do as well as the other one did with all them gorgeous blooms.

Kathy!! I just had to let you know that my bareroot that i've only had about 3 weeks had leafed out some and when I went around looking today I discovered a brand new BUD!!!! I was SO excited! Just had to let you know. I'll post a pic when it opens. It's teensy weensy but a bud nonetheless!

I would love to be in a zone that welcomes and cares for Angel Face. Sigh - such a beautiful rose; wish I could smell it!!

Your Angel Face was so pretty. This is a rose I tried after seeing pictures here on the forum of other people Angel Face roses. But mine never looked anywhere near as good as those (or any other) pictures. So I replaced it with Blueberry Hill which I like much better, at least in my yard.

Its funny how some roses are such great ones in one yard and duds in another. Lovely pictures of yours.
