The early March garden (large photos)

Sorry for the size. I know many of you have seen my yard before but for those who haven't, here it is, taken from upstairs. In case you think I am on the wrong forum, I grow a ton of roses in addition to all those daylilies. The roses bloom first, then the daylilies, after big first flush of roses, and then the roses come back and carry the rest of the season. The roses are harder to see in these photos. I guess this place will be hard to sell with the weird backyard when we retire.

Kansas Citians really enjoy your kind of garden, Kathy! They love daylilies and tight cozy clusterings and shapings of plants. It'd sell like "hotcakes" over here! They also enjoy retaining walls and the pagodas/obelisks and charming patios.

We are looking forward to when the roses take over on Phase Two! (smiley face). I was really surprised to see that you prune your roses so closely in California at a warm weather zone. Yikes, I left mine as gangly tall stalks that are now zapped with 63 degree weather then bone-chilling cold. I will have a nightmare on my hands. No tidy greenery on my end, lol!

The garden is slowly emerging from the snow, but it is pretty homely at this time of year, with just a little bit of green, and a lot of dirty snow and dead stalks that I didn't get cleared out last fall. By the front of the house From Early spring 2014 The large perennial bed along the old barn foundation From Early spring 2014 The big bed at the shop From Early spring 2014 I look at the vole tracks in the melting snow and cringe when I think of the damage they must have done, but I can't see enough to know yet. From Early spring 2014 The stream is in full flood from the rain (all our recent storms have been rain, even when MA residents got snow.) From Early spring 2014 From Early spring 2014 The big field doesn't look nearly as lovely during mud season with its piles of muddy manure and areas of slushy melt water. From Early spring 2014 I know that this messy stage will only last a week or two, and I am enjoying the daytime temperatures in the 50's.

Bill, Here's hoping your recuperation will be accompanied by warm Spring weather that will allow you to sit in your garden. Get well soon. Since Houz doesn't support Flickr, I've decided to bypass it and just upload jpegs from my desktop. Galanthus Blewbury Tart is the only thing blooming in my garden. I don't even have any crocuses showing. They're all under the snow. Sedum Angelina, still in her winter colors, but at least snow free. The damage that is emerging as the snow melts is considerable. Small trees and shrubs have loads of torn branches. The conifers have their lower branches still covered and bent. This is a detail from Thuja 4Ever Gold, which actually has had its best color this winter. I often bring in a few potted Hostas and put them in a window in order to get them to bloom a little earlier than usual. This is Designer Genes, one of the best with a yellow and red combination. No green on this plant. We're supposed to get some snow melt over the next few days. It's almost April for goodness sake. Steve

The coastal spring here is slow, as usual, but there are a few things to look at. Daffodils: Jetfire (the one I posted earlier turned out to be Jetfire, not Rijnveld's Early Sensation - someday I hope to be able to type this without checking the spelling) and Toby the First. Pieris are starting to bloom but it doesn't seem to be a good year. They had lots of fine buds over the winter but the heavy icy late snows and maybe the critters and turkeys (I saw a squirrel climbing all over a pieris) may have damaged them. Late crocuses are still blooming. C. t. 'Ruby Giant' Yucca 'Color Guard' has looked pretty much the same all winter - a nice reliable color accent. In the hope for the future category, the peonies are sprouting: and one of the Gold Heart dicentras has appeared along with Geranium 'Biokovo' leaves. I spotted a few vinca flowers in an out-of-the-way spot and the pussy-willow buds are furry. Claire

That does look hopeful, spedigrees, and water in the brook is a wonderful thing. I second the pancake placement, Jane. As if the cold snap wasn't enough, the NWS is talking about "... Elevated risk for fire spread today... Even drier air will overspread southern New England today with minimum relative humidities only 10 to 20 percent expected across much of the region. Northwest winds will not be as gusty as Saturday, but still quite strong with frequent gusts around 25 mph. This combination will lead to an elevated risk for fire spread. Winds should diminish fairly quickly early this evening, after sunset." I do have one unexpected sign of impending spring. My clivia 'Golden Dragon' has never bloomed in the winter when it's supposed to - it always waits until it goes out on the deck (around the beginning of June) and then blooms in July. But this year it started showing a bud on February 28 - probably earlier but I wasn't looking for one. and today the blossom is looking serious even though it's hiding between the leaves! And last year's flower stalk has two seed pods on it! I think I'll wait and see if the seed pods/fruit ripen and then maybe try to germinate the seeds (if there are any in there). Claire

Every time I see a picture of your garden I think how much it looks like my backyard. The only difference is the bed in the center in mine is oval and raised, and the overall yard is bigger. But, I can't take a picture, since I have a one-story house and would have to get up on the roof! Yes, it is scary to think that someday new homeowners will dig up cherished plants and put in a pool or something, but it is wonderful to enjoy it now!

I did notice one big difference in our gardens, though. You need to intersperse those daylilies with iris!

You have an interesting layout there. Snowheather suggests adding some irises. How about some reblooming irises and a few delphiniums if they grow in your climate? Just a thought.

Beth, I would love to retire this year. Don't know if I can swing it but it is on the horizon.
Serenasyh, I pruned quite far down this winter. I think the roses do better with more pruning as I have tried leaving more but it hasn't had the best results. We have a very long growing season, too.
As for irises, I do have bunches of Dutch irises blooming right now. I have tried the other type but they grow too big and take up too much space. Delphiniums sound nice but we get very hot very fast. I have wallflowers, allysum, veronica, and volunteer portulacas that bloom in summer. And purple asters for fall.

I have a steel frame just like you - My hubby was wanting to buy a shade cover and have a top. I like it just this way.This way the sun can shine in and the birds have a place to rest. Your yard is ready to explode with color.

It's a beautiful mix of plants. Now I see how you get all those great photos with roses and co-ordinating flowers in the back ground. Very 'painterly'.

Kathy your garden is designed so wonderfully, I like the tiered block walls around each little section and I think you have your plants spaced very nicely. Can't wait to see your pictures of the roses!

Kathy I love your back yard.Its gorgeous and can't wait till its all in bloom again, to see pictures of it.I have lots of daylilies, too, now.

I really like the border of the bed from that kind of stones, looks very neat!

I have also similar wooden fence on which I grow mostly clematis. What worked for me to make it more interesting in the spring, was to plant a mix of tulips between clematis just in a line along the fence.

Kathy, how could you bear to give up your garden? I would think whoever buys your house would be lucky to have such a beautiful garden area! Dig up everything and take with you. I had a friend take cuttings of everything too large for me to dig up! Don't leave all that behind, too sad.
