yipeee ... at last a bloom!

I was out in the yard today spreading alfalfa pellets around the roses when Vesper snuck up on me! I remember seeing a bud last week, but was so busy in the front yard weeding and stuff that I did not remember until I saw it - my first bloom on this own-root baby - she's so beautiful she took my breath away! no fragrance - but I don't really care!

Beautiful Rose - lovely colour. It's a joy to see roses from warmer climes. It will be another 2 months for me - if I'm lucky.

Josh they are not so small as they might look on the foto. ~ 18 cm in diameter. I think my others will take some more time. Zhey are in the same age, but i had some problems with that bloody mealybugs. They rejected the development of some and i lost some very precious! Best regards

Maryl, These were planted last year and the seeds came up this year. Most of them were seeds my neighbor had collected from her blooms the year before. They are prolific self sowers, and do their own winter sowing (in spades!) as you can see. I don't think you would call them perennials, just self re-seeders. Thanks, Mantis. I love that rose. Jean and Lisa. That vine is about four or five years old. I bought it and it was beautiful the first year, but I left it out, and it froze, and I assumed died that winter. In the spring, it went into the compost pile and I noticed green a few weeks later on it; a lot of new shoots, so I pulled it out and planted it and it bloomed beautifully that spring. It goes in the green house each winter after that...if it wanted to live that much, it deserved help. It always a lovely vine even when I put it in the green house in the late fall, and doesn't go dormant unless I withhold water. Lisa, I have the red honeysuckle and this Mandavella, but most vines I have had tend to start growing rampantly and are tough to confine, so I don't do many...but there is a stephanotis vine in the greenhouse that was bought it as a twig, (you know those little two inch cube pots) and it is huge now, and it doesn't like being anywhere else, but the greenhouse, It bloomed beautifully this year (first bloom season) Go figure. Congratulations! We recently sold after 8 months We only got the one offer so I know how exciting just having someone finally decide of all the choices out there, they are interested in your home. In a different time I might have been offended with the offer we received. We had already reduced the price by 11% and their offer came in another 11 percent below our reduced price. We didnt HAVE to sell and frankly financially we couldn't accept the original offer anyway so a counter offer to us was a no-brainer. My agent had told us months before an offer was on the table that most people were just flat out accepting any reasonable offer they get since they are few and far between. We countered and recountered till we reached a point where they came up to our self imposed bottom line but they still got a good deal. It was 94% of the current asking price. We were happy to be done. Our agent also felt confident we could probably make up some of our "loss" selling on the uying end. We are buying our new home at 90% of the CURRENT list price and 77% of the original list price. They were listed for 8 months as well.

Baja California has done really well for you Debra, I've really enjoyed your photos of it. I don't have anything blooming right now, last bloom on a seedling yesterday. I do have a bloom scape on another seedling coming up, probably won't bloom for another week or so.

Beautiful rose! Love the color. I should get a bloom on Joseph's Coat in a week or so. You must be in a pretty warm area.

Its very pretty, and the color(Is it a rusty color or orangy color?)
And the pot ghettos,that is a lot. Are you running out of space or did you buy too many? I guess you have to find space too put them soon.
Aprille were you suppose to be moving? or is that on the back burner for now.
For me I will not see a bloom maybe 2 to 3 months, boy thats a long time.

Kathy - it's not too warm out here - we live in San Lorenzo - where abouts are you?

Bernice - the colour is a rusty orange - it's kind of got spekles on it I think ... hmm the pot ghetto - I kind of bought too many roses last year ... those own roots have a way of sneaking up on you - and then I discovered a few Canadian suppliers and had to order from them ... we are thinking of digging up more lawn - but I don't know - we are still undecided about moving so don't want to plant too many cos that's how much we'll have to dig back up to take with us. as for the move - it got moved to the back burner for a while ... I still want to move - mainly to add more garden space.

Aprille, I am right near Sacramento. Not as mild as SL, I guess. And I can certainly understand wanting more space to garden. Less house, more garden is what I dream of. Probably in a few years.
