After an awful year I am looking to improve and learn by reading everything I can find on here about growing from seed. I was wondering where you guys would recommend I look for seed? I don't have much close by so I will probably order online...I just want to find a good seed source. All I can find locally is habanero and jalapeno...both of which I grew this year (jalapenos had NO heat, habaneros never flowered). I have them in pots and in the ground, decent, fast draining soil (tomatoes doing great in same area...not much rainfall however). Thanks for ANY suggestions...I'm just excited to get into growing more peppers.

it's barely august. when you say the habs never flowered, do you mean you already gave up? my habs had a bad stretch for a bit, but they're loaded with pods now.

many on here (myself included) will give away seeds. it's all a question of what kind you're looking for.

If your serious and dedicated.... Ask around here. Best seed source in my opinion by far. Most will give away for a self addressed envelope.

Mice aren't fungi so does a fungicide stop them? I use strips of small hole size chicken wire laid over the rows and pressed flat to the ground to protect peas and beans from mice. The peas grow up through the mesh.

Keep in mind that it can take several years for some of them to go from a seedling to a mature plant I think the first link will keep yah busy enough until someone comes by and suggest Something pre-grown Yeah it only gets easier after that.... With all the potting mixes and cool container ideas you can see on just about every thread on the forum and then some added lighting. When looking for seed sources the first place I go is to Tania's Tomato data base and I've linked below to the page at her site with seed sources for Ukrainian Heart. For Nicky Crain she shows only herself as a source for 2011 but sold out already. Tania has not had the time to update all the 2011 seed sources b'c so many places were late with their seed catalogs and updating their websites. Many folks have gotten both varieties from Glenn at Sandhill. IS there a problem that you've had with Sandhill in the past such that you're lookiong for another seed source? I do know that the catalogs are going out much later than before for a variety of reasons and those to the East Coast went out last Friday and Glenn asked me to let him know when I got mine. They will go out in batches across the country based on zip code. Just a wee anecdote. He said that two whole pages got messed up and knowing that I don'tlike the variety Sandpoint he told me that I'd be happy b'c it came out as Sandpit. Cut it out Kyle, you're embarrassing me LOL. I had a great time with you, it was enjoyable talking with someone who loves plants like I do, and calls them by their Latin names! Dave, my brugs get no protection. I used to dig them with a big ball, cut them back to about six feet, and over winter them in my pit house. In March they would start into growth, I'd lug them out and plant them in late April, and they'd have their first blooms in late May early June. That got old real fast. In '13 I left them out. When the vortex was forecast I racked up a bunch of pine straw and threw it over the crowns, they sailed through the winter and have ever since. New growth usually appears in early April, is fairly frost hardy but sometimes gets nipped, and as weather warms they take off. Once frost danger is over I start on a weekly liquid fert regimen, five gallons per plant. Starting in late June early July I water two to three times weekly if no more than one inch of rain occurs. Blooms start sometime in June and continue til freeze. Blooming is mostly in monthly flushes, with each increasing til the Oct flush, which is the largest. Yellows are hardiest and best doers around here, but I've seen whites and pinks. I wouldn't call them common, but some are growing them. My yellows are Charles Grimaldi and Dr Suess. As far as the rhodies, my oldest are about 32 years. They are in a smallish valley with alluvial soils rather than the typical clay. I've got a few on well draining fairly steep clay slopes. They are under high deciduous shade. Soil was not amended when they were planted, and the native soil here ranges from acid to strongly so, one spot tested at a pH of 4. Lots of native oxydendrum, kalmia, and deciduous azaleas. I don't have all that many, mostly Dexter's, a few Leach's and Gable's, a few species, and some ironclads. They all grow well, better than my collection in CT. I left around 200 hybrids and species behind when I moved here. This is not a typical rhody growing area of TN, that is more to the east. My elevation is 1140 feet ASL. Most of the members of the Tennessee Valley chapter of the ARS live in the Chattanooga area, some have extensive collections. Short of visiting the Sino-Himalaya, I'd love to get to Pukeiti, but that won't happen lol.

Thanks for the responses guys, the habs are very stunted (2 plants, one flower on one, nothing on the other), the jalapeno has about 15 peppers on it but the one that I picked (just started to turn red) tasted like a bell pepper...zero heat. I do have 2 Thai Dragons with a few peppers but they are SLOW growing, the peppers haven't grown or changed in color in 4 weeks.

What kind of peppers do you like? By this I mean heat wise...? Because people are gonna offer seeds that may melt your palet lol

PepperGuy I am new to hot peppers, but like medium hot to hot...although I'd love to try something really hot (morbid curiosity)...I do love hot sauces and love to cook with peppers. I'm working on building up my tolerance...lol. I will gladly SASE to expand my new hobby

This forum need a like button lol. I've been hunting around myself on a reliable seed source myself (got a joepepper mag since they're local but read to many bad reviews on here) if I can save seeds,(this year will be my first shot at it) I'll be more than happy to share/trade. Right now I've got bell,sweet banana, hot banana , Cayenne, hot Cayenne, jalapeÃÂ±o, habanero, red bhut and something that was suppose to be bhut but the plants look different.

When you say the jalapeno had no heat, did you try the whole pepper or just the tip? Usually the tip has little to no heat, but the rest of the pod is plenty hot.

MadCat, sorry I tried the whole thing, I love jalapenos that's why I tried them. I also tried cayennes (about 6 peppers, hot but poor production)...
