I truly feel your pain! Ole Stubby is trying to hang in there but I'm not sure for how long. He's a real trooper. Poor little fella. At any rate, sorry to hear about your cutting. If this one dies, I will be 0 outta 2 in the Hawaii cutting category. But I seem to do so well with the others. Will have to get another one in the future, as I don't like being defeated! :-)

Hi there, thanks for the condolences!
Karen, this is what remains of my one and only cutting! The tip of the cutting is the one on the left, which joined onto the front cut end of the one to its right, followed by the other 2 sections, the right hand one is the bottom piece with its 'nether region' furthest away from the camera. I am letting this end piece dry out and will see if that might turn into one of the mid-stem cuttings I have read about on here.....but I don't hold much faith in it surviving although the rot isnt into that particular piece.
All I can hope for is a return trip to Hawaii for the kids!!! Or myself and DH...that would do nicely!
I think I will have to have a serious look on eBay next spring.........meanwhile Celadine is doing well and holding her flowers once more.

First of all, I am so totally sorry for your loss Greenclaws. What a shame. I had two little stubs I had to lay to rest not long ago. And one other little stub I keep a watchfull eye on. It is hard to lose a little friend. Now a tad off the subject. I see in the background of your picture of your poor baby the pot with the styrofoam cut with a hole in it. Now my mind is pondering that. If you would, tell me how that works, good for water, holding it up...?

Greenclaws, if it's any consolation, I lost several MUCH larger, beefier cuttings this summer. I"m thinking they were either not fresh, or they were just difficult varieties to root (or I couldn't provide as much heat and light as was necessary). Keep your chin up. I'm sure you will find many more oportunities to obtain cuttings or rooted plants now that you 'have the bug'! Surely there are other growers in the UK that you can connect with.

Similar to growing orchids, we'll just have to discover the varieties that are easier to grow in our own unique environments. Since I don't live in a subtropical or tropical climate it will always be a challenge for me. Maybe that's what makes growing plumerias so intriguing.

I feel your pain. I'm still working with tiny pieces left from the plumies that my toddler uprooted. I won't give up as long as there's still a few inches of healthy stem left.

Lauri, yes, the polystyrene as we call it here in the UK did indeed help keep the cutting upright, but my main concern was to try and keep the warmth from my heat box in the soil as the air temp would have surely lessened it. I originally placed a cut off lemonade bottle over the soil to act as a mini greenhouse, but when I saw the fuzzy mould on the tip I immediately removed it to let it dry out as it was keeping the cutting moist...this way the air circulated and hopefully should have kept the mould away, but the rot had well and truly set in by then I guess!

I suppose shall be 'lurking' on here quite soon as soon my Celadine will be sleeping for the winter months, the weather has taken a dive now that October is already upon us. However, it's great to be able to read all about your progress in the warmer climates that most of you have in the USA and further afield. I find it really fascinating to interact with all of you, all are so friendly and freely give their advice and knowledge without reward. It's good to learn of your success (and failure!) remedies and tricks to enable you and the other forum users look after these lovely plants...good luck!

Greenclaws, I am sorry to hear that your much wanted cutting didnÂt work out. I have lost a few tourist souvenir cuttings myself this year. I think the poor things go through the mill before they wind up in a home where they are wanted. I hope you locate a source of large fresh healthy (and reasonably priced) cuttings in your neighborhood. Can you get cuttings or plants from an EU country like Spain, Italy, or Cyprus?

Well All...Stubby...aka froggy eyed E.T. was laid to rest today. Another causulty of the dreaded rot! One of these days I'm gonna get one of those Hawaii cuttings to root, not rot! RIP Stub....

So, another one bites the dust eh? Poor 'ole Stubby Frog Eyed ET, sorry to hear of your loss John. I guess these little cuttings sit on the shelves sweating profusely and huffing and puffing away sealed tight in their little plastic jackets for goodnes knows how long. It's no wonder they dont survive long is it.
Musarajo yes, apparently we can import from other EU countries. I may have a go at getting some seed from eBay in the spring and have a go at that way of growing them.
I have yet to come across Plumeria plants for sale in the UK. I think Felixcat did infact see some on a Hawaiian exhibit at the Gardeners World Live Show at the N.E.C. in Birmingham though. Its a huge exhibition complex where they hold all sorts of events including this one that is from the TV gardening programme we have here in England. We go every other year to it, but have never noticed plumies. (Perhaps because we weren't actually searching for them as they were unknown to us before our Oz visit) now I am familiar with them, my eyes will be peeled and on the lookout next time we go!

I did not check the forum for a couple of days and now I am SHOCKED!!!! I feel so sorry for you. I know how painful when you loosing something you love. Like Mocropot, I have been away on business travel for the last week and have not connected with the forum. I was saddened to return and find such tragic news regarding two of the other contestants in the competition! My condolences to both of you on the losses. While away, I left my plants indoors under lights on a timer. The cutting does not appear to have made much progress, but it still appears relatively healthy. My wife thought the small nubs that are trying to be "claws" looked bigger, but I couldn't see much change. I'll post an updated photo tomorrow. Good luck with your other plants.
