steven- i fail to understand the "paper I cover the cuttings." Was the cutting planted in soil in a pot? Did you have a heat mat? What was the paper? I am interested in what worked but it is a bit unclear to me. Bill

ok here it works you get a seed started kit that u use for seeds in the spring i think it is made buy jiffy anything that holds humidity on the bottom lay down some wrinkle some papers on the bottom put your cuttings and lay down paper on the top of the cutting wet it down not soaked but damp keep it humid they will root right up

I had to trim a lot of my plumerias this Fall (to get them into the house and garage), so I have a lot of cuttings to play with this winter. I'm going to root as many as will fit into a community bucket. First I lined a large square kitty litter bucket with a sheet of thin styrofoam (to act as insulator). Then I placed in a seed-starter heat mat on the bottom, bringing it up on two sides. Then I've placed a large 2.5 gal. zip-lock bag on top of that, that has a few inches of perlite and soil mix. The mix is barely moist -- I did not add any water. When plugged in, the heat mat keeps the soil nice and toasty. After my cuttings are well cured (ends dried), I'll just stick them all in the bucket, just on top of (but not in) the soil and will mist the cuttings every once in a while. By not being in soil, I'm hoping there will be less chance of rot and the moist heat will do all the work. I'll keep you posted. I have about 6 different varieties, so we'll see which ones root first.

Steven, are you talking about laying the cuttings down between two wet papers or under a wet paper in a covered plastic container to hold in humidity?

Similar to starting seeds between wet paper towels that are kept in a plastic baggie?

I would love to know if that is what you are doing. Also, what temp are they at? Inside or outside? Light or no light?

It sounds like it is working.

I have several epidendrum stem pieces that I'm trying to root in a plastic container that had fruit in it. I laid the pieces on top of a mix of damp peat and perlite.

I have another rooting chamber from a deeper plastic container that is filled with a mix of peat, perlite and a bit of vermiculite. In the center of the container I sunk a small clay pot with the the drain hole plugged. (Like an Olla.) I put water in the clay pot and keep the lid on.

I got the design for the rooting chamber here on Gardenweb.

It is stuffed with little clippings that I pick up when I'm out walking. My success rooting cuttings has improved dramatically.

that is exactly what ia am doing to keep the huidy up i have the room at 75 degeers so its prob 70 it the box i was realizing the cutting root out tot search for water so they stop once they hit water so plant tem after u see roots i pot them up right away

Stevenwayne, My trees grew so tall and big this year and I need to cut back. I already have several cuttings, 3 - 4 feet long. I am curious about this method however, how could I keep these big cuttings in plastic bags to give them the humidity.

Cool ideas everyone! There is a huge plumeria in my courtyard, I've asked the manager if I could have a cutting. We rarely see each other so he told me to get a cutting myself that way nothing will happen to it if he leaves it on my front step. Where would be the best way? He wasn't too sure either so this will be a learning experience for both of us. :)

Ask him if you can cut off that lower branch that sticks out to the right in your first picture. I think this would make that tree look much nicer and give you several cuttings to work with.
