Winter Storage Question for Seedings

Hi,

I have about a hundred of a year old seedlings that I planted them from seeds. I'm thinking about pulling them out from their pots and storing them bare-rooted. Is this a good idea?.

That's a lot of seedlings! About half of my year old seedlings didn't go dormant so I ended up keeping them under lights. If they have gone dormant I don't see why you couldn't store them bare root as long as the roots didn't dry out. Can't your plumies stay out year round in your zone?

Karyn, I heard that seedlings wouldn't go dormant in the first year. This winter will be their 2nd. winter as I sowed them around this time last year.
All Plumerias in my zone go dormant.

Z. candida is an evergreen species, so you will need to pot them and place indoors, in a south facing, sunny window or in a greenhouse. They also like plenty of moisture and will grow in shallow water. If allowed to dry completely, the bulbs will shrink up and become useless. I would plant them 2" deep in a shallow pot or bulb pan and set that in a shallow watertight container, which can be filled with water, refilled as necessary. Check frequently to insure that the potting mix remains wet or constantly moist. Dig them before first hard freeze. They are said to be hardy to Zone 7 (in ground), but I have lost all of mine in the garden at temperatures of 5Â°F. Their replacements will be overwintered indoors from now on! Good luck! Rb

Snaillover, there are different kinds of milkweed (Asclepias) and they don't all have the same germination requirements. A good place to look up the different types for reliable suggestions on how best to germinate is the Clothiers Germination database, I'll link it for you. The seed sowing articles found there are good too, you may want to read through them. If stratifying a type seed is recommended, storing dry in your garage won't help, that's only storage. In order for the chill to be helpful the seeds must be moist. Can you sometimes skip that step and get (some) germination, Yes, in a very few cases...but the databases will give you suggestions for methods shown to provide the best and most complete germination. It's hard to advise not knowing which poppy too. The oriental perennial types will germinate without the moist chill, are fine sown in pots, while other perennial types may need the chill - and the annual poppies are often best direct sown. In my milder climate I'll direct sow in Fall, Winter, earliest Spring. You can sometimes very carefully transplant the annual types into the garden but for the most part they don't do as well with the roots disturbed. I would park it on some boards so that the tires aren't touching the ground and don't sink in or get frozen down, use sta-bil or something like it in the gas, and remove the battery to trickle charge inside. I've also read about changing the oil before storage so that the acidic exhaust blow-by doesn't eat at the metal, but I think the guy who advised that was a bit eccentric and I don't put much stock in that advice. When we battened down the hatches on my brother's car for an overseas deployment he read to cover the car (mower in this case) with some towels under the tarp so that there is breathing room beneath the tarp so that you don't end up with an algae coating in the spring. We also plugged the exhaust with steel wool to keep critters out. That's all I can think of, I'm sure you'll be fine. You could go buy a camping tent and park it under a (canvas) roof for the winter :)

I have found that temperature shifts are the number one reason for tuber rot in my storage situation. The more constant the temp, the better. Other long-time growers believe that running refrigerators are the kiss of death for tubers, as the constant cooling cycle dries and stresses the tubers. I see posts every spring from an unhappy camper who tried storing in the fridge. An unplugged fridge might do better... I don't know about that. I have heard lots of negative talk about peat moss, as it has a tendency to dry out tubers too much. Adding moisture would only invite the tubers to break dormancy and sprout. Personally, I would avoid that medium, sticking with sawdust, cedar chips, vermiculite or perlite to dry-pack the tubers. One gent at my local dahlia club always splits the tuber clumps in half, cleans out the pith inside the stem to avoid rot, and stores in open shopping bags in his root cellar. He divides in spring. There's many ways to store, but keep them between 40-55 degrees if possible. I'm curious why one would pull them out of there pots and store bare root. I don't have near as many, but I do have a few. Had planned on just keeping them on a heat mat under a grow light.

Lauri how long do you keep your seedlings on a seed mat? I only keep them on the seed mat for the first month or so after they sprout and that's only during the winter.

I've had them on their for...hmmmm.....well, months I suppose. I figure the longer they are on there the better their little roots grow. Maybe I should take them off? Hunh, good info goin' on here so it seems!

I had year-old seedlings last fall that I kept under lights. Most remained green, but some dropped leaves, so I left them under the lights, but reduced watering. I think with seedlings you need to be prepared to keep them growing, but they'll tell you when they're ready for a rest. This year some of these now second-year seedlings are quite large -- almost 20" and will most likely go dormant.

My 2nd year seedlings had better go dormant this year. I won't have anywhere warm to keep them and like yours many are 2' and over. If they don't willingly go dormant can I just cut off the foliage and force them into dormancy without killing them?

Good points everyone, thanks. I think I will end up keeping them in a greenhouse like last year. However, if some of them go domant. I might do experiment with storing them bare-rooted.
