New roses

After last springs late freeze ( 24 for several hrs in mid April) killed out a lot of my roses, I spent most of the summer deciding what to buy and from who. I decided to get the better part of my rose's from K&M Rose Nursery. I've known Jim Mills and have bought from him for a long time. I've been getting my HT's in group's of 3 and 4 of the same variety. So far I have received Louise Estes, Gemini, Moonstone and will receive Marlon's Day this coming week. Also on my list to to receive this fall is Randy Scott and Crystalline. Next spring I will stat getting some David Austin roses and a few mini' and miniflora's from him. By the way, he is now selling David Austin roses on fortuniana root stock. He has a great list for this fall and will be adding to that list next spring. I've been growing Septer'd Isle on fortuniana for several years now and is a HUGE beautiful bush covered with dozens of those beautiful pink blooms in spray's of 2 to 7 blooms.

I ordered some HTs from Palantine that are on multiflora. But I do want to get some from K&M. Last winter really did in a lot of my roses. I think I was a bit colder than you, believe it or not. My thermometer showed 0 for a few hours. That did in most of my teas (OGRs). Most had to be cut down to the root ball, one died outright. While they were own root and came back, the HTs didn't fare as well. So I'm also going to try roses on fort and I can't wait to try some Austins and minis.

Fortuniana makes everything huge. The Austins could well be garden-eating monsters as a result. Most of them are without the help of fortuniana.

Kristi, just thought I should mention the Kordes perfume-fest Parole, aka Buxom Beauty. Was introduced to the USA in 2008, so it may have gone under your radar. Apart from its names (Jailbait/Dumpling - yeah, good work there, Kordes Marketing Dept), this deep cerise pink rose is pretty near perfect - no spray requirements, beautiful high-centred flowers with substantial petals (HUGE blooms in cooler weather), nicely productive with a fragrance that is really intoxicating and waft-y, richly sweet but sophisticated. No cold cream or myrrh. And it cuts like a dream. I'm up to six of these. They're my battery hens for vase filling. Just sayin'.

Heirloom has been around since the '70's and at one time was a very popular rose. I grew it until I lost ALL my hybrid tea and floribunda roses in the winter of 1982, when it reached -24F here, which is about 24 degrees colder than it *should* get, lol. It was a beautiful rose, although I preferred its offspring, Intrigue. For some reason I never replaced either one, but they are beautiful roses (smell good, too!), even if prone to BS here.

Embothrium(Pugetopolis) I was not able to find where you are from. Yikes! Austins generally run big anyway. I can't imagine them on fort.!

Yeah, most of the Austins on fortuiana get pretty large but bloom acording to the size of the bush. I had several Austins on fortuniana when I lived in FL. The one I was REALLY impressed with was Abraham Darby. A huge 10' bushy, healthy shrub totally covered in blooms all year long. After I moved to GA., I tried it on Dr Huey. Not even close to what I was use to. I'll be getting 4 Austins from Jim this coming spring. L.D. Braithwaite, Abraham Darby and 2 The Prince. I also grew The Prince in FL. 5'x3'. Really nice bush for me. Bloomed up a storm from Oct. till early May. It slowed a little during the heat of the summer but I really liked it.

I've been wanting to try some fort. but I'm nervous about it. I know people say if you can get it through it's first winter it will do OK but...look at the winters we're having! Not sure it's worth the attempt or not.

Seil, my friend who lives five miles south got hers through one winter, but not the second. I would let them go, and get some good ones on R. multiflora from Steve at Wisconsin Roses. I too long for those huge beauties on Fort., but it isn't to be. :-(
